The Department: 

The Department of Public Works (DPW) constructs, maintains and improves various components of the City’s infrastructure and provides quality, cost-effective, timely services to the residents and businesses of Santa Clara. DPW is responsible for a wide variety of programs throughout the city which include implementation of solid waste and urban run-off pollution prevention programs, design, construction management, inspection and maintenance of City streets, bridges, storm drain systems, traffic signal systems, building facilities, fleet, street trees, landscaping and the closed landfill.

The Position: 

This is the second level paraprofessional position in the Staff Aide series requiring the frequent use of independent judgment and interpretive ability related to research, analysis, and report writing. An incumbent in this classification performs work of a varied and responsible nature under general direction with some responsibility for the follow-through on details of assigned projects. This classification is distinguished from a Staff Aide II in that the Staff Aide II – Environmental Programs is a public facing role with specific knowledge of solid waste, source reduction, recycling, and urban runoff pollution prevention.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Process utility bills for residents and businesses in the City.
• Work with other departments and the City’s waste management service to accurately set up complex utility accounts and process utility bill adjustments.
• Interact with and assist customers to set up, adjust, and/or close their utility accounts and provide general customer service support.
• Reconcile revenue and financial accounting systems, interfacing transactional data between them.
• Create invoices for various departments to collect fees and other sources of revenue.
• Review, reconcile, and record daily revenue transactions.
• Assist with various month-end and year-end accounting tasks specific to the Revenue section.

The Essentials

• Three (3) years of increasingly responsible accounting clerical experience.
• Education equivalent to an associate of arts degree in accounting or a related field. Additional experience may be substituted for some of the required education on a year-to-year basis.

Highly desirable

The Department:

The mission of the Finance Department is to ensure that the financial/fiscal activities of the City, its Agencies and Corporations are performed, recorded and presented in compliance with professional and ethical standards. The Finance Department administers the financial affairs of the City, including City-owned public utilities. These functions include: budget administration and control; maintaining a general accounting system and the preparation of comprehensive annual financial reports; collection of taxes, fees, special assessments and utility charges; investment of City funds; procurement of supplies, materials, equipment, and services; operating the City Warehouse; issuance of bonds and debt management; internal auditing; and financial management of contracts, including leases.

The Accounting Division resides in the City's Finance Department and is responsible for providing relevant, accurate, and timely transaction processing and financial reporting services for the City. 

The Position:

This is a paraprofessional position in the classified service and is distinguished from the next lower level of Accounting Technician II in that positions at this level require the frequent use of a high degree of independent judgment and interpretative ability related to a technical knowledge of accounting, computer applications, on-line financial systems, and applicable laws and regulations. While a Senior Accounting Technician can perform work in all areas of the Accounting Division, the current recruitment is within the Accounts Payable section. These positions are returning to the fire district in 2025, and we’ll be hiring three people to operate the chipping crew.  This position is expected to be active from approximately May through November.  The actual start and end dates will be dependent on weather and snow conditions and may be extended beyond 6 months, but no more than 9 months from the employment start date.  The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies.  

The Chipping Crew Members work under the direct supervision of the Division Chief of Fire and Life Safety or their designee.  

The primary purpose of this crew is to operate a residential chipping program for the local community. This includes responding to chipping requests, traveling to those addresses with a truck and chipper, chipping the material, ensuring a clean site upon leaving, potentially hauling and dumping the material at a temporary holding site, assisting with loading, and ensuring activities are adequately tracked. The applicant must be comfortable working in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions and lifting objects frequently up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.  Chipping crew members will also assist with community workdays utilizing the truck and chipper or assisting with cutting and hauling combustible materials and filling green waste dumpsters.

The Position: 

Silicon Valley Power (SVP), the Electric Department of the City of Santa Clara, is seeking an experienced Senior Instrument and Controls Technician.  

The Senior Instrument and Control Technician is a senior level technical classification. The Position has a key role in the optimization of the Preventative Maintenance program and the development of SVP’s Maintenance philosophy. This classification performs maintenance and repair on all instruments, control systems, and electrical equipment in the City's power generation facilities.  The incumbent inspects, repairs, tests, adjusts, installs, and removes all power plant electrical, DCS/control, and instrumentation systems and equipment including:

• Monitors, maintain, and repairs gas turbine, steam turbine control systems, generators, transformers, and switchgear.
• Maintains, calibrates and repairs plant electrical, instrumentation, and control systems.
• Performs routine and advanced trouble shooting activities
• Maintains logs, manuals, records, drawings, schematics and operating procedures in a neat and professional manner.
• Provides written reports on control system conditions when required.

• Three (3) years of operations and maintenance level experience above the entry level with work assignments in the City of Santa Clara combined cycle generation facilities may substitute for the above experience requirements.

License/Certifications:

Possession of a valid California driver's license is required.
 Possession of the following certificates are required within one year of appointment for the duration of the appointment:

• Department of Transportation (DOT) Qualified Operator for Natural Gas Pipeline;
• Department of Transportation (DOT) Qualified Operator for Natural Gas Compressor Station;

• Perform analyses of engineering, operational, and economic data to support imported water projects, including surface and groundwater storage projects.

Imported Water Unit (Position Code 385) 

Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.

This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite.

Under the direct supervision, performs a variety of difficult and complex professional officer and field engineering work; prepares plans, designs, and specifications for a variety of the Department of Public Works projects; reviews work prepared by outside consultants; prepares engineering reports; and performs related duties as assigned.

Full Time, Part Time, and/or Remote. Primary duty is to review and comment on plans, specifications, and estimates for capital improvement projects. Projects may include road, bridge, and airport improvements. Must live in California and possess a California Professional Civil Engineer License.
