Additionally, applicants must meet the following education requirements to qualify:

Group Supervisor I ($34.61/hr-$43.24/hr) - Completion of at least 60 semester or 90 quarter units from an accredited college or university. An emphasis in sociology, psychology, corrections, criminal justice, counseling or a closely related social or behavioral science is preferred.

Group Supervisor II ($39.04/hr-$48.83/hr) - Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university. A degree in sociology, psychology, corrections, criminal justice, counseling or a closely related social or behavioral science is preferred.

Selected candidates must be available to work flexible shifts, including graveyards, day shift, swing shift, weekends and holidays at any of the Probation Department locations. Selected candidates must also successfully pass a background investigation, including fingerprints, medical examination, psychological evaluation, a truth verification test and be free from any physical, emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a Peace Officer. Felony and misdemeanors convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. Group Supervisors hired into permanent positions must pass PC 832 peace officer training and complete a 160 hour STC training course within one year of appointment.

There are currently various vacancies in the Probation Department. Depending on qualifications, the vacancy may be filled at the Group Supervisor I or Group Supervisor II level.

Examples Of Duties

Group Supervisors are responsible for:

• Supervising daily activities of youth in confinement.
• Observing and supervising unstable youth.
• Enforcing security and safety measures including searches of youth and their living quarters for contraband.
• May perform housekeeping tasks.
• Providing orientation for newly detained youth.
• Explaining and enforcing rules and regulations.
• Providing transportation for youth from the County's detention facilities to other facilities and medical offices.
• Supervising daily activities such as meals, showers, housekeeping, laundry, yard work, recreation, vocational work crews, and visitation.
• Providing individual and group counseling.
• Leading group discussions and facilitating rehabilitation programs.
• Maintaining daily records of observations, incidents and events.
• Logging information, writing reports and summaries of behavior and maintaining records and files.
• Physically restraining assaultive youth and de-escalating violent behavior.
• Maintaining a safe environment for the youth and staff.
• Being a positive role model and authority figure.
• Participate in staff conferences.

Qualifications

Group Supervisor I: Completion of at least 60 semester or 90 quarter units from an accredited college or university. An emphasis in sociology, psychology, corrections, criminal justice, counseling or a closely related social or behavioral science is preferred.

Group Supervisor II: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university. A degree in sociology, psychology, corrections, criminal justice, counseling or a closely related social or behavioral science is preferred.

Licensure/Certification:

• Possession of a class C California driver license or equivalent.

Other Requirements:

• Must be at least 21 years of age on or before date of appointment.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States by federal law.
• Must not have been convicted of a felony.
• Must successfully pass a background investigation prior to employment.

What You’ll Do

The Public Works Supervisor will organize and supervise work crews engaged in the maintenance and repair of streets, traffic markings, signs, signals, street lights, drains, storm pump, stormwater conveyance systems and sanitary pumps, lagoons, dams, creeks and ditches; to provide technical staff assistance, including safety compliance and implementation. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Recommend and assist in the implementation of program goals and objectives; standard operating procedures; establish schedules and methods for street, traffic and stormwater conveyance systems maintenance and repair; safety compliance and implementation; implement policies and procedures.
• Organize and supervise crews of skilled and semi-skilled personnel in the repair and maintenance of streets and stormwater conveyance systems, including street resurfacing, streetlights, traffic signals and street markings and signs, repairing and patching; street cleaning; sidewalk, curb and gutter removal and replacement; sewer cleaning and repair; weed control and storm drain cleaning maintenance.
• Maintain and interpret time, material and equipment use records; determine and implement adjustments to optimize the effectiveness of the maintenance system.
• Investigate complaints and recommend corrective actions as necessary to resolve complaints.
• Fully utilize the computerized work systems in accordance with workflow processes.
• Participate in selecting, training, motivating, counseling and evaluating staff; participate in monitoring employee performance objectives; prepare employee performance reviews; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures.
• Coordinate safety training and support Department safety programs including preparation and updating of City safety practices, standard operating procedures and training materials. May be asked to conduct specific safety trainings depending on training and experience. These activities may be required in both the Engineering & General Services and Environmental Services Divisions as requested by the Director.
• Inspect the work of crews while in progress; provide advice and assistance to subordinate supervisors and lead workers.
• Assist in preparing cost estimates for street, sewer, traffic and drainage system maintenance and repair activities; make plans and sketches for minor street maintenance and repair projects.
• Assist in coordinating street, sewer, traffic and drainage system maintenance activities with other City departments, divisions, and sections and with outside agencies.
• Participate in budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; submit justifications for needed equipment and materials; monitor and control expenditures.
• Monitor streets, traffic signs and signals, street lights, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and drainage facilities for needed maintenance and repairs.
• Issue purchase orders to contractors and vendors; requisition materials and supplies

The Public Works Supervisor receives direction from the Public Works Field Maintenance Manager or other Public Works senior management personnel and exercises direct supervision over crew lead workers, crews, and other staff per program assignment.

What You’ll Do

The Public Works Maintenance Leadworker performs skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of sewer infrastructure, road ways, sidewalks, and storm conveyance system. The Leadworker assigns and participates in the work of maintenance crews, operates power driven equipment, and performs related work as required.   This position is responsible for lead supervision of a sewer, street, storm or traffic safety maintenance field crew. Under general supervision, incumbents perform a variety of office support activities including the more difficult or complex transactions to an assigned department, which may include word processing, data entry and organization, telephone and counter reception, processing of documents including work orders, record keeping and filing; typing routine forms, memoranda, correspondence, and/or reports; providing information and assistance to staff and the general public; providing lead direction and training to related staff; and performing related duties as assigned. This is the full journey-level class in the office support series. Incumbents at this level are capable of performing the full range of advanced and difficult clerical and office support duties, including taking and transcribing meeting minutes and assisting in department-related projects and programs. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from the administrative assistant in that the latter performs more advanced technical and specialized administrative support duties requiring additional training and/or experience and is typically assigned to a division manager or department head.

The City of Menlo Park is seeking engineering professionals, with exceptional technical and project management skills, for Senior Civil Engineer positions in the Public Works Department (Department) Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Division. The Senior Engineer will lead capital improvement projects under the supervision of the City Engineer or Public Works Director. The CIP team delivers projects for City owned facilities including streets, buildings, storm and domestic water, and parks. The Senior Civil Engineer is responsible for executing CIP projects from planning through completion and managing assigned staff.

Facilities Maintenance Technician II (journey-level class in the classification series)

Responsible for performing the full range of maintenance duties at City buildings and facilities in order to ensure that all are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for City and public use. Incumbents are responsible for performing maintenance and alterations on buildings and facilities, electrical and mechanical systems, identifying and evaluating construction-related problems, and performing installation and repairs on plumbing systems. Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from Senior Facilities Maintenance Technician in that the latter is responsible for technical and functional supervision of lower level maintenance staff and is capable of performing the most complex duties assigned to the series.

Senior Facilities Maintenance Technician (advanced journey-level class in the classification series)

Responsible for providing lead supervision and training to facilities maintenance staff. Incumbents regularly work on tasks that are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment, including performing the most complex duties required to ensure City buildings, facilities, and grounds are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for public use. Responsibilities include training, developing and scheduling Facilities Maintenance Technicians, inspecting and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner, and performing a wide variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of City buildings, facilities and grounds. Positions in this classification rely on experience and judgment to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the assigned section. The work involves problem-solving of unique issues or increasingly complex problems without precedent and/or structure. Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to deliver work products.

Positions in the Facilities Maintenance Technician class series are flexibly staffed and positions are normally filled by advancement from the previous level; progression to the next level is subject to management approval and is dependent on the incumbent (i) performing the full range of duties assigned to their current level, and (ii) acquiring the knowledge, skill, and experience necessary to meet the minimum qualifications for the next level of the series.
