DESCRIPTION:
Substitute preschool instructor plans, organizes, and implements a program of instruction for preschool as part of scheduled recreation activities; develops courses to be a part of preschool, inventories, and maintains material and equipment requirements for program; supervises and trains Preschool aides and volunteer assistants to assist in conducting the program as needed; assists in publicizing programs to the general public; represents the City before general public as part of assigned functions; coordinates assigned program activities with other departmental programs.
Class Characteristics
This classification differs from that of a Preschool Teacher which is an as needed position. Substitute teachers are responsible for assisting the preschool teachers as needed, on an on-call basis with no set schedule. This is a part-time temporary, non-benefited position limited to 995 hours per fiscal year.
Supervision Received and Exercised
Receives direct or general direction from the Recreation Coordinator. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Engage with participants in a variety of positive, fun, and age-appropriate activities. Typical activities include, but are not limited to: arts, crafts, reading, snack preparation, indoor and outdoor play, field trips, and special events.
Supervises program participants.
Assists with leading activities, programs, and events.
Maintains a positive and safe work environment.
Encourages participation and facilitates activities.
Supports fellow Preschool Teachers and participates in maintenance of facility and equipment.
Attend staff meetings and respect departmental policies and procedures.
Answer questions and field complaints from customers and refer them to appropriate staff.
Performs other duties as required.
Open and close classrooms and facilities for weekday, weekend, and evening recreation classes and events.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be 18 years of age and have an equivalent of two years college and minimum of one year experience in facilitating a program for preschool age children or two years related experience in a leadership position working with preschool age children. At least 15 units of college level courses in Early Childhood Education are mandatory. Current Certifications in CPR and First Aid are desirable. The Preschool Instructor should have knowledge of safety precautions, and should possess a positive and enthusiastic attitude.

Education and Experience
Must have 500 HOURS of related work experience, such as: facilitating recreation/educational classes, recreational camp experience for youth/teens, experience in a daycare setting, or environmental/educational classes.
- Must have a high school diploma/GED
- Must have a valid California Driver's License
- Must be CPR and First Aid certified
- Must be able to provide transportation to and from work.
Licenses and Certificates
Current CPR and First Aid certification are desirable. (CPR and First Aid certification and re-certification will be offered to new employees on June 13, 2025).
Must be able to provide official documentation of hours and certifications obtained within Early Childhood Education.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Substitute hours are not guaranteed and may vary.
Typical Preschool Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
Typical Lunch Bunch Schedule: Monday through Thursday, noon to 2 p.m.
Worked hours outside the typical schedule can be up to 7 hours a month
Physical Demands
Must be able to stand, sit, bend, squat, climb, kneel, jump, run, twist and reach, and lift and carry weight of 30 pounds or less while coordinating and or/ supervising activities.
