The City of Sunnyvale is seeking a Senior Engineer to help manage design of a wide variety of capital improvement projects to update, modernize and improve City infrastructure. As the Senior Engineer, you will help us plan, design, and build infrastructure to support the City goals and objectives of creating a more sustainable, healthy, and livable Sunnyvale. The current open position is in the Department of Public Works Engineering Division and is with the design team in the Project Administration Section. Senior Engineers are working managers. The position primarily works on managing design of a wide variety of capital improvement projects, possibly including pavement rehabilitation, parks renovation and enhancements, or water and sewer utility projects. The position oversees consultants and leads a team of other City engineering staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or a related field, AND

Five years of increasingly responsible professional civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering experience, depending on assignment, including experience in a supervisory or project management role.

Licenses/Certificates

Possession of registration as a professional civil or structural engineer issued by the State of California.

Position Duties  

Salary range(s) for this classification is $93,933.84 - $114,114.00. This salary range(s) includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.  

As part of the Engineering Services Division, Survey Section of the Public Works Department is responsible for delivering land surveying services on a variety of City projects including street widening/improvements, storm and sanitary facilities, library/community center/fire station sites, and airfield projects. These land surveying services include, but are not limited to the following:  topography, property acquisition, construction staking, pavement marking layout, and monument preservation. 

The Survey Section is currently recruiting to fill two (2) Instrument Person vacancies. An Instrument Person performs a variety of sub-professional surveying and engineering functions of moderate difficulty either on a survey crew in the field or in the Survey Section office. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:  

• Acts as instrument person on a survey party. 

• Records field notes and prepares maps and sketches from survey data. 

• Sets up, adjusts, and operates all types of survey instruments. 

• Provides lead direction and training to other survey personnel. 

• Uses modern, survey-grade Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment. 

• Calculates grades and enters data into field books. 

• Turns angles and extends horizontal line using a total station. 

• Uses the level to obtain vertical control. 

• Uses the level, total station, rod, targets to perform topographic surveying in order to describe the existing features of a piece of land in order that it may be reproduced as a plan map. 

• Locates survey points by measurement, magnetometer and from maps of former surveys. 

• Assist with transferring electronic field data to a PC workstation, processing and interpreting the data, and checking for errors. 

• Assists with producing high-quality, computer-generated topography maps and tables using sophisticated engineering software. 

This is the journey level class in a four class surveying series. This class differs from the next higher class of Survey Party Chief in that incumbents of the latter perform sub-professional surveying work and are usually responsible for completing only a segment of a surveying program or project.

Overview:

The Senior Engineer (Electrical) is to provide specialized electrical engineering expertise, particularly related to low and medium voltage electrical distribution systems and low voltage motor control centers used in industrial facilities, including water treatment plants. This individual will serve as a subject-matter expert, support ongoing capital projects throughout all phases—planning, design, and construction, act as the Owner’s representative for electrical engineering, and manage consultants and professional services agreements. Their role includes troubleshooting complex electrical issues, assisting with design modifications, and managing capital improvement (electrical) projects, such as the Electrical Improvement Project at Water Treatment Plants and providing electrical engineering support for the Reliability Improvement Project (RWTP). Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Manage complex, politically sensitive, and/or large treatment plant capital improvement projects through all phases, including planning and design; supervises multi-division teams and coordinates and collaborates with external agencies.
• Provides electrical and power engineering support for projects under the Treatment Plants Project Delivery Unit.

• Troubleshooting and repairing existing industrial electrical distribution (both hardware and software).

• Collaborating with project teams to ensure that projects in planning, design, and construction phases are abiding by industrial to electrical distribution standards.

Treatment Plants Project Delivery Unit (Position Code 1099) 

Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.

This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite.

Under the direct supervision, performs a variety of difficult and complex professional officer and field engineering work; prepares plans, designs, and specifications for a variety of the Department of Public Works projects; reviews work prepared by outside consultants; prepares engineering reports; and performs related duties as assigned.

The Position:

Silicon Valley Power (SVP) is seeking dynamic, engaging and qualified engineers for several vacant Electric Utility Engineer positions in various divisions.

For the SVP Fiber Division, this position will be assigned engineering work associated with SVP’s fiber network. This individual will assist with engineering design, engineering pole loading analysis software, site surveys, material selection and estimates.   

For SVP Operations Division, this position will be assigned engineering work associated with communication and electrical power engineering. This individual will assist with the programming of industrial multiplexer networks. The individual should have a strong interest in industrial high-speed data networking.

For SVP Engineering and CIP projects, this position will be assigned engineering work associated with electrical power engineering, substation design and Transmission and distribution systems. The individual may manage or will assist in managing Capital improvement Projects (CIP) to support growth of the electric utility. For the Customer Development and Project Management Division, this position will assist in monitoring the operation of power generation equipment to ensure that it operates within the desired specifications, conducting routine inspections and maintenance of plant equipment to prevent failures and ensure maximum efficiency, Implementing upgrades and modifications to existing systems to improve performance and reduce environmental impact, coordinating with other technical staff and management to discuss and strategize plant operations, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to safety and environmental protection, preparing reports on plant operations, outage planning, and other performance metrics necessary for proper management and planning.
