The Deputy Probation Officer I/II/III position in the Probation Department will investigate cases of juvenile delinquency or dependency and adult applicants for probation; supervise and counsel juveniles and adults on probation; prepares reports and recommendations for court. Provides professional casework services to adult and juvenile offenders involving the referral, supervision and rehabilitation of juveniles and adults on probation; and provides advocacy and related services to victims of crimes. The Deputy Probation Officer III is the advanced journey level position in the class. This position is scheduled for forty (40) hours per week. 

WHAT YOU’LL DO

• Prepares and presents reports and recommendations regarding juveniles and adults for the Superior Court.
• Investigates violations of the law by juveniles and adults, and prepares a variety of reports to the court on individuals under the jurisdiction of the court.
• Analyzes and uses information gathered by interviewing the accused and others involved in a case to assess client needs; develops a supervision plan designed to achieve desired behavioral changes; prepares progress reports.
• Arrests juvenile/adult probationers, or makes arrangements through law enforcement agencies for the arrest of juvenile/adult probationers who violate the law or terms of probation; physically restrains juvenile/adult probationers when necessary.

DEFINITION Under general supervision or direction of the Director of Water and Wastewater Resources or the Director’s authorized personnel, develops, monitors, conducts, and administers the Department’s occupational health and safety and environmental programs and Water/Wastewater industrial training program in compliance with federal, state, and local safety, health, and environmental regulations, as well as industry standards; develops, implements and administers  safety and training policies, procedures and directives; evaluates effectiveness of safety and training programs, implements new programs and procedures as needed; assists in the administration of the risk management program; acts as the Department’s Safety Officer; and performs other duties as assigned.

Establishes, implements, and coordinates safety training objectives; plans, develops, schedules, conducts, or arranges for regulatory and other health and safety related training; maintain records and database; prepares and presents reports to Department management as needed. Develop safety training and industrial training plans for new employees. Conducts and monitors Department facility and site inspections, job hazards analyses and other evaluations to identify hazards and potential risks; makes recommendations to assigned supervisor and implements appropriate and approved corrective actions for compliance with Federal, State, and local safety, health, and environmental regulations, as well as industry standards. Conducts audits of corrective action to ensure compliance with regulations and corrective actions. Develops and maintains the Department’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program, Safety Manual, and Training Program. Performs related report preparation and record maintenance for Environmental Protection, Fire Protection, Hazardous Waste Management, and Occupational Safety. Develops and maintains Department’s hazardous material business plans (HMBP) and petroleum storage tank permitting in compliance with Environmental and local Fire Department Regulations. Maintains and updates the Department’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS) database. Conducts thorough audits, investigations and analysis of accidents, incidents and injuries; develops findings, prepares reports, and makes recommendations to assigned supervisor of corrective actions and preventative measures; assesses incident statistics to determine requirements for new or modified training. Maintains a library of reference materials on training records and coordinates the acquisition of training materials, including manuals, technical resources, videos, recordings, and self-instruction workbooks. Coordinates necessary safety certification and license obtainment and renewal for Department employees. Develops and administers contractor safety program, including reviewing contractor health and safety work plans for Department projects, serving as the Department’s subject matter expert, and working with vendors and consultants for matters related to safety compliance, and providing contractors with appropriate hazardous materials communication in compliance with applicable regulations. Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public: performs other duties as assigned.

Education: Graduation from High School or equivalent. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree majoring in industrial engineering, safety engineering, occupational health, or closely related field desirable.

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in the areas of workplace safety and employee training, including at least one (1) year of which involved administration of a comprehensive safety and accident prevention program. Five (5) years of experience in the areas of workplace safety and employee training, including at least three (3) years of which have involved administration of a comprehensive safety and accident prevention program desirable.

License/Certification: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License; possession of a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiac Care Provider certificate and First Aid certificate or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of appointment.

The following certifications are highly desirable:

• Certification by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and an Associate Risk Manager (ARM)

About Maple Street Correctional Center
Designed to create a better environment for incarcerated individuals and staff and to help reduce recidivism, the facility was the first correctional center built as part of California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s initiative to shift nonviolent, nonsexual offenders from overcrowded state prisons to county-run facilities. The center accommodates female and lower-risk male incarcerated individuals and is composed of two separate but interconnected buildings with a central administration area.

The facility’s architecture emphasizes safety, rehabilitation, and natural light. Instead of placing cells along the exterior walls as in most jails, the design features a curved glass façade with dayrooms located along windowed areas that open to individual living units. This layout improves supervision while allowing daylight to enter the building, helping the white-painted cells feel more open and spacious.

Each floor has a central core station supporting four housing units. These areas include classrooms, a computer lab, and multipurpose rooms to support educational and rehabilitative programming. Additional design elements include natural ventilation, a large rooftop recreation yard, artwork depicting scenes from nature, and a calming natural color palette.

An attached 88-bed transitional housing facility supports alternative sentencing programs such as day reporting, weekend programs, and other supervised custody arrangements, helping prepare individuals for reentry into the community.

The events for the Correctional Officer test include:

• 99-yard obstacle course in under 23 seconds
• 165-pound body drag for 32-feet in under 7 seconds
• 165-pound body lift for 60 seconds
• 500-yard run in under 2 minutes
• 1.5-mile run in 15 minutes or less

IMPORTANT: When you report for the test, inform The Academy that you are applying to be a Correctional Officer with San Mateo County. San Mateo County Correctional Officer applicants will not be required to participate in climbing the 6-foot chain link fence or 6-foot solid wall portion of the WSTB test.

NOTE: PELLETB test and WSTB results from other training organizations or law enforcement agencies will be accepted so long as they meet California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) requirements.

 

 

Examples Of Duties

Sheriff's Correctional Officer duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Receive, search, book, fingerprint, and guard inmates in the correctional facilities.  
• Take custody of inmates’ property.  
• Maintain records of bookings, releases, transfers, money and other functions of the correctional facilities.
• Prepare inmates for court and for release.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

If designated as Correctional Deputy, also perform the following:

• Transport and provide security for inmates at the hospital.
• Transport inmates between custodial facilities.
• Provide security for inmates at court.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

The examination/selection process will consist of the steps detailed in order below.

Step 1:  Application Submission: All applicants are required to submit an online application to be considered. Step 2:  Written/ Physical Agility Examination: Applicants for the Sheriff’s Correctional Officer have three options for meeting the written examination requirement – (1) submittal of a valid and passing T-Score on the POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) exam dated within the last 12 months prior to the date of application OR (2) possession of a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation certification (CDCR) or possession of an Adult Corrections Officer Core completion certificate from a certified Standard and Training for Corrections (STC) academy from the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) OR (3) possession of an associate’s degree or higher from an accredited U.S. college or university AND submittal of a valid and passing Physical Agility Test WSTB score dated within the last 12 months prior to the date of application.

Step 3:  Application Appraisal (weighted: 100%): Applicants who meet the qualifications for the position will be placed on the eligible list for a period of six months.

Oral Interview: After placement on the eligible list, qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a panel interview with the Sheriff’s Office Professional Standards Bureau.

The North Tahoe Fire Protection District is currently accepting applications for current and future job openings from qualified individuals to serve on the chipping crew. These positions are grant-funded, seasonal positions assigned to a 40-hour work week. These positions are returning to the fire district in 2025, and we’ll be hiring three people to operate the chipping crew.  This position is expected to be active from approximately May through November.  The actual start and end dates will be dependent on weather and snow conditions and may be extended beyond 6 months, but no more than 9 months from the employment start date.  The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies.  

The Chipping Crew Members work under the direct supervision of the Division Chief of Fire and Life Safety or their designee.  

The primary purpose of this crew is to operate a residential chipping program for the local community. This includes responding to chipping requests, traveling to those addresses with a truck and chipper, chipping the material, ensuring a clean site upon leaving, potentially hauling and dumping the material at a temporary holding site, assisting with loading, and ensuring activities are adequately tracked. The applicant must be comfortable working in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions and lifting objects frequently up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.  Chipping crew members will also assist with community workdays utilizing the truck and chipper or assisting with cutting and hauling combustible materials and filling green waste dumpsters.
