The Role:

The City of Redwood City is seeking Firefighter Trainees who, under immediate supervision, actively participate in the Firefighter Academy training program. Trainees perform all related learning and testing activities in preparation for the Firefighter/Engineer classification within the Fire Department of the City of Redwood City.  See Firefighter Trainee job description for more details. Upon successful completion of the Firefighter Academy training program and Field Training Orientation (FTO/Apprentice), incumbents of this non-sworn classification may be appointed to the sworn classification of Firefighter/Engineer and serve a probationary period of eighteen (18) months. Required Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D. or California Certificate of Proficiency).

The Department

The Parks and Recreation Department is the third largest department in the City and is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. The Parks and Recreation Department is composed of a Director and 22 full-time management positions. The department is comprised of the Recreation, Community Services, Parks, Facilities and Common Greens divisions.

The Parks Division is in charge of planning and maintaining the City’s parks, playgrounds, sports fields, and other landscaping and performs a wide range of tasks in order to care for City parks and open spaces. Staff work throughout the year to refresh the appearance of parks repairing or replacing items as needed to keep public spaces clean and safe. There are approximately 25 parks and play lots, including Sign Hill Park, which has 60 acres of open space, and Centennial Way Linear Park, a 3-mile pedestrian and bicycle trail. The Department

The Department of Economic and Community Development includes four dynamic divisions that together are responsible for the preservation and improvement of the physical and economic conditions of the South San Francisco community.

The Planning Division is responsible for drafting long-range plans and policy documents, processing applications for new development, reviewing the design of new construction to promote high-quality urban design and to ensure compliance with the City's Zoning Ordinance and development standards, administering the General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, and planning permits, and fostering careful consideration of historic structures and resources.

ABOUT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Woodland Police Department is staffed with 72 sworn officers, 18 professional employees, and 8 part-time temporary professional employees. Our staffing is expected to expand in size as the City grows. The Department is managed by a Chief of Police, a Deputy Chief, 3 Lieutenants, 10 Sergeants, and a Police Records Supervisor. The Department has three Bureaus; Patrol, Investigations, and Community Relations. Police Officers are assigned to all Bureaus where they work in various capacities and teams.   Within the Bureaus are many specialty units including K-9, Traffic/Motors, School Resource Officers, Gang Task Force, Detectives, and Homeless Outreach Street Team.  There are a number of collateral duties available to officers including SWAT, Crisis Negotiations Team, Field Training Officer, Honor Guard, Arrest & Control Instructors, Firearms Instructors, Gang Resistance Education, and Training (G.R.E.A.T) instructors, Social Media Team, Recruitment, and Bicycle Patrol. THE POSITION: As potential Police Sergeants, candidates in these roles will shoulder significant responsibility overseeing law enforcement and patrol duties during designated shifts. Responsibilities extend beyond field supervision, including the enforcement of departmental rules, fostering discipline, resolving subordinate issues, and conducting team performance evaluations. This role requires collaboration with armed personnel, possibly in uniform or plain clothes, requiring a balance of field and office tasks. Regular public engagement, often in high-stress situations, is a key element, necessitating strong interpersonal skills and emotional resilience. Adaptability to rotational scheduling and a variety of role assignments underlines the need for flexibility and versatility.

The Engineering Manager will report to the Director, Bus Infrastructure and Capital Projects and will be responsible for the engineering functions of the infrastructure and capital project development department for the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans). 

The Bus Infrastructure and Capital Projects Department oversees the delivery of major bus fleet and facilities infrastructure projects for SamTrans. The department’s projects include design and construction of zero emission infrastructure (battery electric bus (BEB) charging infrastructure and hydrogen fuel cell electric bus (FCEB) infrastructure) for SamTrans's revenue and non­revenue fleet of nearly 400 vehicles, sea level rise and flood mitigation structures, bus administration, transportation, and maintenance buildings, and other structures at SamTrans' North Base and South Base Maintenance Facilities.

Examples of Essential Functions:

• Oversee the development of standard plans and specifications that can be used for future SamTrans infrastructure projects.
• Oversees the development of a Design Quality Management Plan for SamTrans projects.
• Manage general engineering and architecture consultants that develop design documents, technical specifications, cost estimates, and schedules for construction projects.
• Oversee management of the scope, schedule, budget, and quality of infrastructure projects from initiation leading into construction phase.

• Manage consultants and professional level staff outside of the agency. Ensure District DBE, SBE and other labor compliance policies are followed.

•  Inspects ongoing construction projects to ensure compliance with design intent.
• Manage and participate in the development and implementation of Standard Plans and Specifications, Design Quality Management Plan and other relevant documents to help improve the workflow and development of the department.
• Plan, direct, coordinate, and review the work directives for assigned staff or contractors; assigns work activities, projects, and programs; reviews and evaluates work products, methods, and procedures; meets with staff and/or contract service providers to identify and resolve problems.
• Provide reviews and approve final project plans, specifications, and cost estimates as well as conduct quality assurance checks for project managers in the preparation of plans, specifications, cost estimates, requests for proposals, and bid documents for SamTrans’ infrastructure projects as necessary.
• Manage consultants with technical expertise across multiple disciplines in conducting independent technical reviews of SamTrans’ infrastructure projects.
• Coordinate and collaborate closely with SamTrans project stakeholders.
• Provide documents and briefs to Executive Management and the Board on the status, progress, and requirements of SamTrans infrastructure projects.
• Manage coordination, communications and expectations with project stakeholders, and internal cross-functional teams responsible for different aspects of planning, design, and engineering
• Provide direction and guidance to consultant staff responsible for managing infrastructure projects.
• Provide support for federal and state grant applications for funding of SamTrans infrastructure projects.
• Support development of contract solicitations.
• Investigate, evaluate, and resolve project issues.
• Identify root cause of issues. Determine and present appropriate solutions.
• Review cost estimates, monitor project schedules and budgets, and monitor work in progress.
• Coordinate the provision of capital project development and implementation services with other departments and divisions.  
• Act as subject matter expert of all technical and regulatory matters affecting bus facility and infrastructure projects.
• Coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies during project implementation, and ensure compliance with their administrative guidelines.
• Represent SamTrans before the Board of Directors, city councils, and other state, federal, local, and regional agencies, boards, and before local citizens in public meetings and hearings as needed.
• Develop, negotiate, and monitor contracts and cooperative agreements with other governmental agencies, private consultants, and private contractors.
• Perform all job duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect one’s self, fellow employees, and the public from injury or harm.  Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
