THE POSITION

The City Attorney's Office seeks a well-qualified, motivated attorney for the position of Assistant City Attorney. This is an at-will position that serves as part of the City's executive management team. 

The Assistant City Attorney will provide legal advice, counsel, and representation to the City in areas including, but not limited to, land use, real estate, housing, and environmental law. Duties include drafting and reviewing contracts, ordinances, resolutions, deeds, permits, licenses, and other legal documents, conducting research, interpreting and updating the City Municipal Code, and providing advice to City staff. 

The Assistant City Attorney will provide counsel to the Planning Commission, the Community Development Department, other City departments, and assist with the enforcement of City Municipal Code. The Assistant City Attorney receives general direction and supervision from the City Attorney and may provide oversight and supervision to support staff. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will have a broad base of knowledge and experience in a variety of areas of municipal law such as the Brown Act, Political Reform Act, Public Records Act, contracts, personnel matters, public safety, public works, and advisory and litigation services. THE DEPARTMENT

The City Attorney's Office consists of the City Attorney, Assistant City Attorney, and Department Administrative Specialist and has a departmental budget of, $1,118,400. The City Attorney's Office advises the Rocklin City Council, City Boards and Commissions, and City Departments on the legal propriety of proposed municipal actions. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association with a Juris Doctorate degree;

Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience as an attorney in the practice of civil or municipal law.

• Active membership, in good standing, in the State Bar of California.

The Position:

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Equivalent to graduation from high school and thirty (30) semester units of college level work with an emphasis in public safety, supervision and management, public administration or related subjects; and
• Five years' experience dispatching in the public safety field, at least two (2) years of which having been at the supervisory level.
Possible Substitutions:
• Administrative or supervisory experience in a public safety department may be substituted for the dispatching experience on a year for year basis.

LICENSE
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at time of appointment and for duration of employment.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
• Willing to respond to callback in case of major emergencies or local disasters;
• Willing to work Saturdays and odd, irregular and unusual hours;
• Will be required to pass a City background investigation, which will include fingerprinting, polygraph and/or psychological testing; and

Deputy District Attorneys perform professional legal services in the prosecution of a variety of criminal and/or civil matters on behalf of the District Attorney and perform other related work as assigned.

Deputy District Attorney I-II-III:

• Level I – This level is assigned to attorneys who have no previous legal experience.  Attorneys at this level work under close supervision. Applicants who have taken the California State Bar Exam this year and are waiting for results are encouraged to apply.

• Level II – This level is assigned to attorneys with at least one year of experience in the practice of law, who have demonstrated sufficient professional knowledge, judgment and skill to begin handling cases under general supervision. 

• Level III – This level is assigned to attorneys with at least four years of experience in the practice of law, who have demonstrated sufficient professional knowledge, judgement and skill to handle the most difficult and complex cases under limited supervision.

Examples of Duties: 

• Reviews and evaluates law enforcement reports and associated information and makes decisions whether to prosecute, negotiate or dismiss.      
• Appears in Superior Court for all criminally related court matters, including, pre-hearing conferences, sentencing, preliminary hearings, motions, and court and jury trials.
• Interviews witnesses and victims of criminal, domestic violence, and other offenses; reviews and evaluates physical evidence, views crime scenes; discusses cases with law enforcement; evaluates cases for settlement purposes and creates strategies for trial.
• Performs legal research regarding a variety of anticipated legal issues; provides advice to law enforcement staff regarding applicable laws, court decisions and legal authorities.
• Prepares a variety of documentation, such as jury instruction packets, motions, sentencing statements, correspondence and other materials.
• Prepares witness lists; organizes and compiles court exhibits and other evidence in preparation for court and trial and provides for legal discovery of such work.
• Prepares and presents cases to the Yuba County Grand Jury.

Per Diem Dispatchers will provide public safety dispatching at Levi's Stadium and/or Santa Clara Police/Fire Communications.

 

As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the general supervision of a Senior Public Safety Dispatcher or Watch Commander and the overall direction of the Communications Operations Manager.

 

The City of Sunnyvale invites applications for Public Safety Dispatcher in Training. Public Safety Dispatcher-In-Training is the entry and trainee level in the public safety dispatcher series. Employees are subject to daily and weekly observation reports until they demonstrate the ability to perform independently. This is an alternately staffed classification. • Five (5) years of current paid employment with a public safety agency or private emergency medical services agency, with high level Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), radio and/or telephone operation; or
• Successful completion of probationary period as a Public Safety Dispatcher I with the City of Santa Clara.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS

• Possession of a valid California POST Public Safety Dispatcher Basic certificate, which may be substituted for six (6) months of the solo status experience.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Classroom education involving fire science or law enforcement related studies.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES

• Possession of a valid California POST Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Certificate and a valid Medical Priorities Dispatching System (MPDS) Certificate are required prior to the completion of the probationary period.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to perform all the essential functions of the job assignment. All candidates will be required to pass a City background investigation, which will include fingerprinting and may include polygraph and/or psychological testing.

PERMANENT CITY EMPLOYEES PREFERENCE POINTS
Current permanent employee candidates who receive a passing score on the examination will have an additional five (5) points added to his/her final score.

• Extract information or data from other computer systems
• View multiple video display terminals for extended periods of time in low variable light conditions
• Distinguish and interpret the meaning of colors on video display terminals
• Distinguish and comprehend simultaneous communications from several sources

• Use emergency medical questioning techniques and provide medical instructions via telephone when required
