THE POSITION

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of activities in the installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems and related equipment within City facilities; performs related work as required. An example of duties are:

• Performs daily inspection and preventive maintenance of the City’s irrigation systems; identifies any safety or repair issues.
• Installs, maintains and repairs irrigation systems; changes and adjusts sprinkler heads and maintains controllers; performs repairs on field irrigation computers, controllers, pumps, wiring, valves, pipes, and sprinklers.
• Monitors soil moisture and effectiveness of irrigation systems.
• Installs backflow devices; inspects and tests as necessary to ensure proper operation; certifies devices in compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Monitors and controls computerized irrigation systems.
• Works effectively with contractors on City-approved irrigation projects; seeks bids and/or estimates for proposed projects.
• Identifies, schedules, and supervises system repairs and installation of new irrigation systems; reviews plans and inspects installation of new irrigation systems; performs annual testing of systems.
• Performs Underground Service Alert (USA) markings as specified and according to accepted guidelines and requirements.
• Designs small irrigation systems.
• Plans and recommends materials needed for work projects; orders approved supplies and materials

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade

          AND

Two (2) years of responsible landscape/irrigation, public works or parks maintenance experience, including experience in design and/or maintenance of irrigation systems

License Requirements:

• A valid California Class C driver license or higher with a satisfactory driving record is required at the time of appointment. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a disability will be reviewed on a case-to-case basis.
• A Work Zone Traffic Control Safety Certificate issued by the International Municipal Signal Association (I.M.S.A.), or successful completion of the Traffic Control Technician-CA State Specific Training Course thru the American Traffic Safety Services Association is required within twelve (12) months of appointment.
• A certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor certificate is desirable.
• Possession of a Backflow Prevention Assembly Testers Certificate from either the American Water Works Association (AWWA), or the American Backflow Prevention Association (ABPA), or the Northern California Backflow Prevention Association (NCBPA), or equivalent is required within twelve (12) months of appointment.

Salary Range:
Five (5) Steps: $26.43 - $32.12/ hour ($27.48 - $33.40 / hour effective 7/1/24)

Summary:
Under supervision, performs routine semi-skilled to skilled grounds landscaping and maintenance work; performs preventive maintenance of District properties; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. These duties may be performed independently or under supervision with a Lead or Groundskeeper II present. • Performs a variety of routine landscape and ground maintenance tasks, including maintaining areas around District facilities, hardscapes and playgrounds, and removing debris and graffiti; maintains assigned areas in a clean, safe and orderly condition.
• Maintains turf and landscaped areas by mowing, edging and weeding; learns and assists with fertilizing, spraying with insecticides and herbicides, aerating and watering.
• Blows, sweeps and washes sidewalks, roadways, parking lots, tennis courts, and other hard­scapes to maintain a clean, safe and orderly condition.
• Assists with planting and removing trees, shrubs and plants; prunes shrubs and trees to shape and encourage growth, using hand and power saws as assigned.
• Assists with the installation, repair and maintenance of irrigation systems.
• Assists with athletic field preparation and the maintenance of play areas and related facilities.
• Operates a variety of power tools, hand tools and motor-driven equipment such as trucks and tractors.
• Loads and unloads equipment, supplies and refuse.
• Maintains daily work records, hazardous materials records and restricted pesticide-use records.
• Attends meetings; participates in safety training.
• Weekend work and rotating schedules may be required.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Participates during disasters or when emergency response is needed.
• May be required to drive District or personal vehicle.
• Non-exempt employees may be required to work overtime.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skill, and/or ability listed below is qualifying.

Education/Experience:
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and one year of related grounds maintenance experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Ability:
Ability to read and comprehend basic instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to park visitors and to other employees.

Math Ability:
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s. Ability to perform these operations using units of money and weight measure­ment, volume and distance.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to use common-sense understanding to carry out instructions provided in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates and Licenses:

• Valid California driver’s license with a good driving record and current automobile insurance.
• All full-time candidates require satisfactory completion of a pre-employment functional capacity examination.
• Department of Justice fingerprint clearance.

About the Position:  The incumbent will be a part of a collaborative, three-person Grants Program team within Administrative Services. The Novato Sanitary District is seeking an organized, collaborative, and fast-learning Administrative Services Technician to support a wide range of essential administrative services functions, such as risk management, human resources, purchasing, record management, and general administration. Under general direction of the Administrative Services Manager, the Administrative Services Technician is a confidential position that provides paraprofessional, technical, administrative, and secretarial support to District programs and services. The Administrative Services Technician learns and then applies procedural, program, and compliance knowledge; assumes ongoing, technical responsibilities specific to assigned areas, such as risk management and record management; works with departments and outside agencies to coordinate assigned programs, projects, and services; and performs research and routine analysis on a wide variety of special projects.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate has experience in either of two backgrounds. The first is a background in providing journey-level clerical or technical support in the public or private sector that included interpreting and explaining complex rules and regulations, researching information, and preparing accurate documents and reports. Alternatively, the second is a background in providing advanced office support that included data entry and the processing of forms and records.

In addition to one of these two backgrounds, the ideal candidate is curious and enjoys learning about new systems and functions at a technical level. They appreciate when careful precision and accuracy is necessary to complete a task. The idea candidate is open to helping with functions and tasks that they are not familiar with and will seek out resources and guidance to better understand the function and complete the task accurately. They are also proactive in identifying needs, developing and recommending solutions, and ensuring the solution is fully implemented.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience: A combination of training and experience that demonstrates that a person has obtained the required knowledge and is able to perform the essential duties of the position. A person with the following combined training and experience would typically qualify to compete in a selection process:

This particular recruitment will be a 56 hour (Monday-Friday) position - with the exception of emergencies and Strike Teams.  The base weekly schedule will resemble the following example:

Our Firefighters perform firefighting, rescue, fire prevention, equipment operation and equipment maintenance activities to protect life and property; provide emergency medical and rescue services to the community; and perform related duties and responsibilities as required. The Firefighter classification receives direct supervision from the Fire Captain and may receive functional direction from the Fire Engineer.

This is the entry level paid classification in the field of firefighting. It is distinguished from the classification of Fire Engineer in that the latter is assigned more responsible and varied duties which require knowledge and experience in driving motorized fire fighting vehicles and operating related pumping, hydraulic and other specialized fire equipment.

Administrative Clerk II:  This is the journey level class in the series and is distinguished from the I level by the ability to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instruction or assistance.

Performs a wide variety of routine clerical work including filing, billing, checking and recording information on records, maintaining logs for assigned functions. Enter and retrieve data from on-line or stand-alone computer systems; operate computer systems to generate reports and perform other automated processes. Work cooperatively with others. OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Gather information from individuals or reference sources to complete and process various forms, records and applications; compile routine information and data for statistical and financial reports as assigned. There is currently one (1) Full-Time 2-Year fixed-term position in the Department of Public Works supporting both the Water Resources and Road Maintenance Divisions.  

The Natural Resources Senior Planner will be housed in the Water Resources Division and will primarily support environmental compliance for Department of Public Works (DPW) Road Maintenance Division projects, including maintenance, repair, and replacement of roads, bridges, and drainage infrastructure (i.e., culverts, ditches and drainage channels).  
The work is dynamic, requiring strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to accomplish the following tasks that range among:

• coordinating with the Road Maintenance Division managers to develop permitting strategies. 
• analyzing project impacts on species and the environment.

The San José Fire Department's (SJFD) core mission is to serve the community by protecting life, property, and the environment through prevention and response. SJFD is a high-volume, all-hazards fire department providing fire suppression and rescue services that protects approximately 200 square miles, Advanced Life Support and Basic Life Support services as well as specialized operations including Urban Search and Rescue, Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting, and a Hazardous Material Unit with a Decontamination Unit. SJFD deploys resources from 34 fire stations, protecting areas within city limits and some unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County by contract. This is the trainee level class in the Firefighter series, responsible for becoming proficient in the understanding of lifesaving and firefighting methods within the SJFD. Through a specific program comprised of general and specialized education, focused training including extensive hands-on experience, Firefighter Recruits will learn diverse tasks, policies, procedures and standards within the SJFD. Incumbents will learn techniques in emergency medical services, rescue work, firefighting and other emergency services. Duties may involve considerable physical exertion and potential risk to health and safety. Work is rigidly structured, highly supervised, and incumbents are continuously evaluated and receive feedback regularly. Firefighter Recruits must graduate from the Academy and be appointed to the class of Firefighter in order to retain employment in the job series.

Upon successful completion of the academy, eligible employees may also receive the following additional premium pays:

• Paramedic Pay: 14% of top step Firefighter upon completion of Santa Clara County Paramedic Accreditation process (currently $733.69 bi-weekly)
• Oral Bilingual Pay: 2.5% of top step Firefighter (currently $131.02 bi-weekly)

Education & Training Pay (AA/AS - BS, Fire Science, Fire Technology, Fire Protection Technology): 1.5% of top step Firefighter (currently $78.61 bi-weekly)

Employees hired on or after January 1, 2017, must reside within 120* minutes travel time from the nearest City of San Jose fire station (non-traffic period as calculated by Google Maps or map program mutually agreed to by the parties).

*effective July 1, 2024, the travel time will change to residing within 180 minutes of the nearest
