The City of Berkeley is now accepting applications for Assistant Inspector in the Building & Safety Division of the Planning Department! This is a temporary, two-year position with an option for a third year upon approval by the Building Official, once certain criteria and milestones are met during the initial two years.

The Assistant Inspector will learn, in phases, every aspect of the building inspection process under the tutelage of the Building Inspection Section and Permit Service Center staff. This training will include learning and understanding the building permit review and issuance process, gaining and cultivating good customer service skills, studying and learning how to enforce the California and City of Berkeley Building Standards Codes, and acquiring proper building inspection techniques.

Upon approval from the Building Official, the Assistant Inspector will have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills by performing inspections in the field throughout the City of Berkeley as allowed by State regulations and under the guidance of a Building Inspector as assigned. These inspections will gradually increase in scope and difficulty as new skills and knowledge are acquired and confidence grows. It is expected that the Assistant Inspector will acquire an ICC Residential Building Inspector (ICC B1) certification by the end of year one and an ICC Commercial Building Inspector (ICC B2) certification by the end of the two-year position. At the end of the term and upon Building Official approval, the Assistant Inspector will have the option of promoting into the role of Building Inspector I (certified).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from high school and:

1. Two years of full-time paid experience in one of the following: 
   • Building, civil, or architectural design drafting;
   • Building, housing, or home inspection;
   • Code enforcement;
   • Permit processing;
   • Performing carpentry, electrical, heating and refrigeration, plumbing, or similar work; OR
2. Three years of full-time experience in support of building inspections, housing inspections, or code enforcement; OR
3. Completion of two years of education in a recognized college or university with completion of 12 semester or 16 quarter units in any of the following or similar areas: civil or structural engineering, construction technology, design, inspection technology, architectural drafting, mechanical or, electrical engineering.

Other requirements: Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill job responsibilities. When driving on city business, the incumbent is required to maintain a valid California driver's license as well as a satisfactory driving record.

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Traffic Maintenance Worker I in the Public Works Department! In this role you will have the opportunity receive on-the-job training in traffic maintenance. You'll learn to paint and install traffic control markings on pavement as well as design, fabricate, install, repair and maintain traffic warning signs, parking signs and other signs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills and abilities for this position is: 
Equivalent to graduation from twelfth grade and six months of work experience as a laborer in construction or maintenance work.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
• Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 60 pounds and to perform sustained physical labor.
• Must be willing to work out of doors in all weather conditions and to work with exposure to heavy traffic.
• Must be willing to work overtime and off-hours shifts in emergency situations. 
• Possession of a Level I IMSA Sign and Pavement Markings Certificate within 6 months of hire.

THE POSITION

General Purpose:
This Recreation Aide position will be assigned to the Family Programs area assisting Recreation Leaders in providing support for the After-School Recreation program.
 
Supervision Received and Exercised:
Receive general supervision from a Recreation Coordinator and may receive technical and/or functional supervision from a Recreation Leader or Program Specialist.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this classification.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

• Assist in leading recreation activities in program areas such as preschool, playground, parks, teens, sports, special events, and senior citizen activities.
• Assist in carrying out recreational activities appropriate to a variety of locations such as playgrounds, parks, community centers, pre-school classrooms, school sites, and sports facilities.  
• Assist in leading activities in areas such as arts and crafts, games, sports, music, drama, and nature study.
• Assist in setting up, taking down, and cleaning up recreational facilities; as assigned, open and close facilities as scheduled for use, and secure the facility upon leaving.
• May provide minor first aid to recreation program participants and/or perform related first aid/emergency techniques.
• Exercise precautions necessary to ensure the safety of recreation program participants and spectators.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Set up furniture or equipment for activities scheduled and see that it is in proper condition and is replaced after use.
• Monitor activities of facility users for appropriate and safe conduct.
• Clean up after facility users and set up for subsequent activities; sweep and mop floors as required, empty trash receptacles throughout the facility, as necessary; keep restrooms and kitchen clean and well stocked with paper towels, tissues, etc.
• Collect fees from public swimming pool patrons and aquatics class registrants, and issue pool passes.
• Complete daily attendance and cash receipt report forms.
• Answer the telephone, provide information to callers and write messages, as needed.
• Assist customers at the front counter. 
• Perform general clerical work such as issuing receipts, photocopying, and filing; complete and submit required forms and reports.
• Clean and sanitize workstation and equipment.
• Assist in conducting preschool class activities in areas such as arts and crafts, games, music, or story time.
• Notify appropriate City staff regarding necessary repair and/or replacement of play areas/related equipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

The City of Berkeley invites applications for the position of Housing Inspector II (Certified)! In this role, you will perform skilled inspection work with City residential housing inspection programs. You will independently perform the full scope of work in the investigation, reporting and follow-up of housing deficiencies to gain compliance with housing, building, zoning, fire, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and related codes and regulations.

Assignments are varied and generally require close interaction with the public, providing information and interpretation of applicable ordinances, codes and regulations. We'll expect you to exercise considerable independence and discretion in conducting inspections, resolving complaints and enforcing inspection results.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from high school and at least two years of full-time experience equivalent to Housing Inspector or Building Inspector or Code Enforcement Inspector for a public agency. 

Must possess:

• An International Code Council (ICC) OR California (CA) certification in Residential Building or Housing Inspection or in Code Enforcement; and
• ICC or CA Residential or Commercial Electrical Inspector certification and ICC or CA Residential or Commercial Plumbing Inspector certification, or equivalent ICC or CA Legacy Certification for either Combination Inspector or Combination Dwelling Inspector.

Other requirements: Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, incumbent is required to maintain a valid California driver's license as well as a satisfactory driving record.

In addition to the qualifications above, the ideal candidate will have effective and courteous communication skills in order to discuss housing violations, violation remedy and necessary inspections and fees and participate in depositions and court hearings as requested. When assigned to development review, you will have the opportunity to review residential, commercial, industrial and public works project plans, traffic impact reports, and other development and design related documents for compliance with City of Berkeley standards and regulations including all applicable local, state, and federal codes and guidelines; evaluate and recommend mitigation measures to address adverse impacts of development projects; review plan checks for small developments; and review traffic control plans for construction projects.

When assigned to capital projects designs and traffic signal systems, you will have the opportunity to manage capital improvement projects including development of conceptual design options, detailed engineering design, bid, and construction administration; prepare council reports, conduct presentations, and respond to project-related public inquiries; design/review traffic engineering design elements for Complete Streets Projects and traffic calming projects; work with project development team to analyze street and road use for all road users focusing on safety and efficiency of transportation networks; and work with traffic signal maintenance team to maintain and upgrade city’s traffic signal system, including using Synchro traffic signal timing software. An ideal candidate in this role is proficient in scope, schedule, and cost management with managing multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously as well as working knowledge of complete streets design principles, traffic calming and traffic control elements, civil engineering, roadway design, and Citywide plans including Bike Plan and Pedestrian Plan.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in civil or traffic engineering and five years of increasingly responsible traffic engineering experience, three years of which were at a level equivalent to the Assistant Transportation Engineer class. Progressively responsible related experience may be substituted for the college course work on a year for year basis.

Other requirements include possession of a valid California Registration as a professional Traffic Engineer or a professional Civil Engineer. A CA Registration as a Traffic Engineer is preferred. Candidates must also possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record. Desirable qualifications include a master's degree in Transportation Engineering/Planning or a related field.
