The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Traffic Maintenance Worker I in the Public Works Department! The Extra Help Employee - BH (Harmony House Coach) position provides support, education, and advocacy to persons receiving services through the Mental Health Services Act. The Harmony House Coach may also provide a variety of services related to the operations of the Harmony House Drop-In Center and the Full-Service Partnership Program. The Firefighter classification receives direct supervision from the Fire Captain and may receive functional direction from the Fire Engineer.

This is the entry level paid classification in the field of firefighting. It is distinguished from the classification of Fire Engineer in that the latter is assigned more responsible and varied duties which require knowledge and experience in driving motorized fire fighting vehicles and operating related pumping, hydraulic and other specialized fire equipment.

THE POSITIONS

The City of Livermore is currently accepting applications to fill one (1) Mechanic vacancy and one (1) Senior Mechanic vacancy in the Fleet Services Section of the Maintenance Division.

Mechanics at all levels perform maintenance and repair services on heavy/light City vehicles/equipment, such as fire trucks, automobiles, construction equipment, street sweepers, lawn mowers, stationary generators; and perform other duties as assigned.

The Mechanic is a journey level classification in the Mechanic series. The Mechanic performs a range of skilled tasks requiring journey level mechanical ability and aptitude. Work assignments are performed according to established rules and procedures.

The Senior Mechanic is an advanced journey and lead level position classification in the Mechanic series and may be distinguished from those in the Mechanic class by the broader range of responsibilities and leading a crew. Senior Mechanics provide lead direction and training to section staff.

This is the trainee level class in the Firefighter series, responsible for becoming proficient in the understanding of lifesaving and firefighting methods within the SJFD. Through a specific program comprised of general and specialized education, focused training including extensive hands-on experience, Firefighter Recruits will learn diverse tasks, policies, procedures and standards within the SJFD. Incumbents will learn techniques in emergency medical services, rescue work, firefighting and other emergency services. Duties may involve considerable physical exertion and potential risk to health and safety. Work is rigidly structured, highly supervised, and incumbents are continuously evaluated and receive feedback regularly. Firefighter Recruits must graduate from the Academy and be appointed to the class of Firefighter in order to retain employment in the job series.
