The Environmental Services Department provides comprehensive and innovative utility services for Sunnyvale’s residents and businesses, including initiatives to achieve the City’s sustainability and zero waste objectives. The department brings together technical, operational, and administrative professional disciplines to form its dedicated and dynamic team.

We are seeking energetic, creative, organized program professionals to advance our environmental goals by engaging the community and designing responsive programs.

We are currently recruiting for the following Environmental Program Specialist positions:

Regulatory Programs Division: Implement Watershed stewardship programs focused on pollution prevention practices for stormwater and wastewater management.

*Regulatory Programs Division: Implement Sustainability programs (e.g. building or transportation electrification) including policy development, program design and implementation, and community engagement.

*Solid Waste Division: Implement Zero Waste programs including SB1383 compliance, waste management technical assistance, outreach and enforcement for multi-family dwelling and commercial businesses.

*Water and Sewer Division: Implement Water Conservation programs to support “Water Conservation as a Way of Life.”

*These are new positions included in the recommended budget for FY 2024-25, which will be considered by the Sunnyvale City Council on June 18, 2024.

The eligibility list from this recruitment may also be used to fill future vacancies in the classification.

All positions are responsible for developing, planning, and implementing environmental programs, and are expected to become knowledgeable about all of the Department’s service areas, regardless of which division they are assigned to. Minimum Qualifications for consideration: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: 

Education/Training: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college level course work in biology, microbiology, chemistry or a related field. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in biology, chemistry, microbiology, or a related field is highly desirable.

Experience: Two years of experience conducting a variety of tests in a physical, chemical, or biological laboratory.

The City of Thousand Oaks is seeking an Instrumentation & Electrical Technician/Senior Instrumentation & Electrical Technician to join our team!

We are seeking a highly motivated, safety-forward, resourceful, and technically skilled team player to perform a variety of duties in the Water Division at the City’s Municipal Service Center (MSC), primarily working with water pump stations and reservoirs. The position may also involve providing support to other Public Works divisions, including Landscaping, Street Maintenance, and the Hill Canyon Treatment Plant (HCTP). 

Primary Responsibilities

• Identify and perform a variety of maintenance repairs and installations and calibrations on water distribution system instrumentation, electrical equipment and facilities, including but not limited to:
  • Process measurement devices including level, flow, pH, temperature, and process chemical level/residual
  • High and low voltage electrical equipment including Motor Control Centers (MCCs), AC and DC motors, transformers, power panels, wireways, fixtures, receptacles and disconnect switches
  • Various motor control equipment and devices including variable frequency drives, motor controllers, adjustable speed drives, relays, timers and indicating devices
• Maintain and upload/download from programmable logic controllers (PLC) and field human-machine interface (HMI) projects
• Perform prescribed preventative maintenance procedures on all relevant equipment
• Actively participate in maintaining a clean and safe work environment
• Order necessary parts to maintain equipment or construct replacement parts
• Respond to night and weekend emergency calls as needed

In addition, the Senior Instrumentation and Electrical Technician shall:

• Train assigned employees in their areas of work
• Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications
• Supervise the use, care, and operation of process control instrumentation, electrical, and related equipment; research, evaluate, and make changes to improve the preventative maintenance program and equipment performance
• Identify safety issues and correct them and ensure adherence to a high level of safe work practices and procedures
• Oversee and participate in planning the installation of new or improved electrical and electronic systems, equipment, and machinery; lead and train City staff on operation of new or modified systems
• Provide technical advice and support to operators, supervisors, City engineering staff, and outside agency personnel; work closely with private control system design and engineering teams
•  Oversee development and oversight of a Preventative Maintenance Program including training and adherence to best standards of electrical safety principles and practices
• Direct contract employees performing electronic or electrical installations and repairs
• Program, install, maintain, modify, and upgrade Software Control Programs that are utilized in programmable logic controllers and operator interface devices, including Supervisory Control Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems

THE POSITIONS

The City of Livermore is currently accepting applications to fill one (1) Mechanic vacancy and one (1) Senior Mechanic vacancy in the Fleet Services Section of the Maintenance Division.

Mechanics at all levels perform maintenance and repair services on heavy/light City vehicles/equipment, such as fire trucks, automobiles, construction equipment, street sweepers, lawn mowers, stationary generators; and perform other duties as assigned.

The Mechanic is a journey level classification in the Mechanic series. The Mechanic performs a range of skilled tasks requiring journey level mechanical ability and aptitude. Work assignments are performed according to established rules and procedures.

The Senior Mechanic is an advanced journey and lead level position classification in the Mechanic series and may be distinguished from those in the Mechanic class by the broader range of responsibilities and leading a crew. Senior Mechanics provide lead direction and training to section staff.

The Principal Accountant will be responsible for leadership and oversight of fiscal management functions for San José Clean Energy (SJCE). The incumbent in this position will lead the Department's fiscal/accounting team and oversee all fiscal management activities for SJCE, including but not limited to the following:

• Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and business processes to comply with generally accepted accounting principles and satisfy the financial management requirements associated with long-term power purchase agreements;
• Lead the development of SJCE standalone audited basic financial statements and SJCE financial statements in the City's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report;
• Prepare quarterly financial statements (unaudited);
• Facilitate external auditor inquiries for standalone financials, City Annual Comprehensive Financial Report, and Agreed-Upon Procedure engagements;
• Lead the preparation of quarterly financial statements (unaudited);
• Analyze the impact of GASB pronouncements on SJCE's financial statements and develop accounting practices to satisfy GASB pronouncements;
• Actively participate in the financial planning and forecasting for SJCE with particular focus on validating actual financial data, proposed assumptions, and general feasibility of projections in the current and upcoming fiscal years;
• Manage external auditor inquiries pertaining to SJCE standalone financial statements and City Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.

The Thousand Oaks Library is in search of a Library Assistant who will be a key player in the Technical Services of the Access Services Division.   • Acquisitions: place orders with vendors, ensure orders are received physically and in Sierra, the Library Services Platform; resolve damaged items issues; manage canceled titles; find alternate vendors to fulfill the order. Liaise between vendors and staff to meet the needs of the library. 
  • Perform bookkeeping tasks to ensure invoices accurately reflect goods received; post weekly to update the Fund Report in the integrated library system. 
  • Perform copy cataloging of physical materials, including books, DVDs, or Spoken Word, following existing procedures based on industry-established cataloging standards to update bibliographic records. 
• Ability to interpret general library policies and procedures and apply knowledge using sound judgment 
  • Establish, maintain, and update accurate records and files

Accounting Technician II 

$24.93 - $31.91 Hourly 

Full-Time

The Accounting Technician II is an advanced journey-level class responsible for the City's payroll processing, distribution, and required reporting, including records maintenance, management, and the preparation of payroll reports in accordance with union agreements and City, state, and federal rules and regulations.  Incumbents exercise considerable judgment in decision-making in day-to-day payroll operations.  Responsible for a full range of financial record-keeping transactions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, utility billing, collection, and taxation.  Incumbents may be assigned various accounting-related responsibilities and are expected to perform more detailed non-professional accounting duties.  

Accounting Technician II is under general supervision, plans, organizes, and reviews the work of the Finance Department payroll and accounting section; performs the full array of para-professional accounting duties involved in the processing of payroll and the maintenance of the payroll system; reviews and reconciles payroll reports and prepares journal entries; provide information to departments and employees regarding payroll issues; performs point-of-capture data entry related to cash receipts and accounts payable transactions; prepares, processes and verifies bookkeeping entries affecting general and subsidiary ledgers; performs customer service functions with the public and/or accounts payable vendors both in person and over the phone performs other related duties as required. 

Receives general supervision from the Fiscal Manager.  Exercises technical and functional supervision over assigned office support staff.
