The City is seeking a Division Manager to manage all services and activities in the Safety Division of the Human Resources Department. The Safety Manager will report to the Assistant Director of Human Resources and will be responsible for administering the City of San José's extensive safety program, which includes Worker's Compensation, Employee Health Services, Injury and Illness Prevention Programs, City Driving Program, Safety Show Voucher Program, and ergonomics. THE POSITION: The Public Works Department at the City of San Mateo has an opportunity for a per diem laboratory analyst to perform a variety of physical, chemical, biological and bacteriological analyses of water and wastewater according to standard methods and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Two years of college study with at least twenty semester units of chemistry, biology or related science. A Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology or related science would also be qualifying.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team at the forthcoming state-of-the-art aquatic and recreation facility set to open in Summer 2024. The brand-new 49,360 sq ft facility will feature indoor and outdoor lap pools, a zero-entry wading pool, fitness amenities, a gymnasium, a walking track, and ample space for programming and rentals. 

The successful candidate for the Aquatics and Fitness opening will be responsible for professional recreation duties, encompassing the planning, organization, coordination, and supervision of aquatics and fitness programs at the facility. We are seeking candidates with substantial experience in Aquatics and Fitness, and preference will be given to those holding certifications such as AFO, CPO, LGI, WSI, or other relevant Aquatics and Fitness Certifications.

The ideal candidate for the Programs, Classes, and Events opening will assume responsibility for professional recreation duties, encompassing the planning, organization, and supervision of contract and in-house recreation programs, classes, and camps, and the permitting of external special events. The supervisor will also have oversight of youth and adult sports leagues, enrichment classes for youth and adults, and other programs within the Recreation division. The position provides technical and functional supervision for the Recreation Services Coordinators assigned to these programs.

Responsibilities of the Recreation Services Supervisor include, but are not limited to:

•    Managing and supervising assigned operations to achieve goals within available resources; planning and organizing workloads and staff assignments; trains, motivates and evaluates assigned staff and volunteers; reviews progress and directs and implements changes as needed.

•    Providing leadership and direction in the development of short and long range plans; gathering, interpreting, and preparing data for studies, reports and recommendations; coordinating department activities with other departments and agencies as needed.

•    Preparing for publication a variety of brochures, calendars, letters, posters, news releases, flyers, and related communications regarding recreation programs.

Requirements

In addition to graduation from a four-year accredited college or university with major coursework in recreation, physical education, social work, gerontology, public administration or another closely related field of study – the candidate will also have three (3) years related paid recreation work experience at a level comparable to Recreation Services Coordinator or similar position with significant experience in the implementation of recreation and human services program or activities. 

Additionally, the candidate should possess a valid California driver’s license or ability to obtain one, and may be required to obtain and maintain a Class B driver’s license. First Aid, American Red Cross Lifeguard  Instructor, CPR, and other specialized certifications may be required based on supervisory assignment.

DEFINITION

• OPERATOR I (COLLECTION)
  Under general supervision or direction, the Operator I (Collection) is responsible for the overall operation of the wastewater collections system, which includes the repair and maintenance of the sewer collection system and pump stations.
   
• OPERATOR II (COLLECTION)
  Under general direction, supervises the operation of the Collections System of the Wastewater Treatment Plant on a designated shift to ensure processing and discharge of wastewater which complies with performance standards of State regulatory agencies; perform any combination of tasks involved with inspection, construction, repair, and preventive, corrective and emergency maintenance of sanitary personnel; prepares logs and other records; performs maintenance tasks as required and other related duties as required.
   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION REQUIREMENTS

For the Collections System, ability to locate, detect cause, and correct sewer stoppages; detect and perform minor repairs and adjustments to sewer equipment; maintain pumps and related mechanical equipment; and report to work at any time during an emergency.  Perform electrical and mechanical repairs, maintenance work and modification to equipment used in a water quality control plant; use various mechanic’s tools with skill and accuracy; available for standby on sewer calls on a rotation basis; follow oral and written directions; maintain working relationships with other employees.  (See Physical Demands section as it relates to Essential Function Requirements.)

• OPERATOR II (COLLECTION)
  Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Lead a crew in the safe performance of preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance of sanitary sewers
  • Respond to service requests, unclog mainline stoppages, and keep records on sewer line cleanings and state of existing problems within the Collections System
  • Repair mainline breaks, replace broken pipe and reconnect pipe sections
  • Operate power rodder, jet truck, backhoe and TV equipment
  • Conduct periodic inspections and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to wastewater pumping stations and equipment
  • Keep daily logs and records on equipment; makes reports to the supervisor
  • Provide technical assistance and prescribe work methods and safety procedures to maintenance workers and utility workers
  • Inspect installation of new sewer lines, laterals and related structures; may study blueprints and specifications preparatory to inspection of construction project
  • Supervises the work of all operating personnel assigned to shift; trains and evaluates performance of shift employees, enforces safety procedures in conformance with policy of plant’s safety program.

Nelson Center, including preschool, after-school programs at various sites, recreation classes and sports leagues, community events and special event rentals.

A variety of Utility projects involve design, development, and construction of projects; therefore, exceptional project management skills are imperative to be successful in this role. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative solutions that address complex challenges, so your expertise and leadership will be instrumental in driving our projects to success. Additionally, the Senior Civil Engineer will manage assigned staff and consultants and assist with budgeting tasks. Furthermore, the Senior Civil Engineer will provide and participate in critical team leadership to ensure that all utility engineering services, goals, projects, and initiatives meet the high-performance standards of the Department and City.
