POLICE COMMUNITY SERVICE and EVIDENCE TECHNICIAN

The City of Sausalito Police Department is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Police Community Service and Evidence Technician. This vital role supports our mission to maintain public safety and maintaining evidence, as well as enforcement of parking rules and regulations

This is a journey-level non-sworn classification in the Police Department that performs the full range of duties related property and evidence as well as assists the patrol officers with minor evidence collection, reporting writing and responding to related calls for service as needed to effectively provide police services. Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative.

Under general supervision, provides a variety of routine to complex clerical support services within assigned police areas, including but not limited to: typing, word processing, transcribing detailed and confidential material, record keeping and filing, and assisting with the administration of the Police Department’s budget. Performs related work as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

The Police Office Assistant is a journey-level position, fully competent to independently perform a variety of office support duties. All positions are characterized by the presence of fairly clear guidelines from which to make decisions and the availability of supervision in non- routine circumstances. Specific duties, including the amount of typing, word processing, and use of on-line or personal computers, will vary with the organization unit to which assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Types correspondence, reports, and specialized documents related to the functions of the police unit to which assigned from drafts, notes, dictated tapes, or brief instructions, using a typewriter or word processor.
• Proofreads and edits as necessary typed and other materials for accuracy, completeness, compliance with departmental policies and correct English usage, including grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
• Enters and retrieves data and prepares reports from an on-line or personal computer system, following established formats.
• Prepares and updates a variety of reports which may require the use of arithmetic calculations.
• Maintains records and processes forms such as payroll records, purchase requisitions and orders, and others specific to the organizational unit.
• Provides clerical support to the department in the implementation of operational business plans.
• Assists in the administration of internal and external contracts for interagency services with other agencies.
• Assists the Police Office Coordinator with the administration of the department budget by monitoring the budget for variances, recommending budget transfers, and balancing the overall budget at year-end.
• Establishes and maintains office files, researches and compiles information from such files.
• Provides factual information regarding City or unit activities and functions.
• Accesses confidential local, state and federal databases.
• Views and handles confidential backgrounds and personnel files of prospective and future employees.
• Reviews computer produced reports for accuracy and makes corrections as required.
• Operates standard office equipment and performs such office support activities as opening and distributing mail; processing outgoing mail, erasing dictation tapes and ordering supplies.
• Issues and maintains identification files; seals juvenile and adult arrest records.
• Receives subpoenas, notifies appropriate parties and maintains subpoena files.
• Handles confidential information, including case files, criminal information bulletins, fingerprints, and other related material.
• Serves as the Police Department’s back-up liaison to the Finance Department on matters concerning the Police Department budget.
• Processes the Department’s payroll and time sheets.

Under supervision of the Grounds Supervisor and under direction of the Maintenance II, Parks and Grounds lead person, incumbents in this classification work individually or as a member of a parks and grounds crew in the upkeep of City parks, medians, and satellite facilities including bus, equipment, and flora; perform related work as required.

MAINTENANCE TRAINEE – PARKS & GROUNDS

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

Maintenance Trainee – Is an entry-level trainee position. Incumbents learn to perform the full scope of duties of the Maintenance I class. This class is alternately staffed with Maintenance I and incumbents may advance to the higher-level class after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher-level class.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Inspect, clean, repair, and maintain City parks and trail system to ensure facilities are safe and usable; inspect, clean, and stock park restrooms; remove refuse from City garbage cans.
• Plant, cultivate, and provide upkeep for City landscapes and parks; mow lawns, replant vegetation, and prune trees, shrubs, and ground covers.
• Prepare and apply pesticides, growth regulators, and fertilizers; identify and appropriately label the containers when using these materials; document materials used.
• Paint, sandblast, or otherwise remove graffiti from public properties; paint interiors/exteriors.
• Attend technical and safety on-the-job training sessions; carry out what is learned in the classroom/tailgate training on the job; fill out accident reports if involved in an accident.
• Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools used in landscaping, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, concrete work, and welding activities.
• Operate and maintain various pieces of medium to heavy equipment including trucks, tractors, chippers, backhoes, skiploaders, mowers, sandblasters, and trailers.
• Inspect irrigation systems; repair and renovate the systems by rebuilding and/or installing timers, clocks, wires, pipes, joints, valves, and heads.
• Control weeds throughout the City.

MAINTENANCE I – PARKS & GROUNDS

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

The Maintenance I classification represents the journey-level within the Parks and Grounds Maintenance class series. Individuals within this class exhibit comprehensive proficiency in independently carrying out a spectrum of Parks & Grounds maintenance responsibilities. This entails not only performing tasks such as inspecting, cleaning, repairing, and maintaining City parks, landscape areas, and trail systems, but also making informed decisions regarding safety and usability. The Maintenance I role stands apart from Maintenance II, the lead-level in the series, as Maintenance II holds responsibility for overseeing the tasks performed by a crew engaged in parks and grounds maintenance.

Join us as a Community Service Officer (CSO) in the Berkeley Police Department! MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:
Equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) years of progressively responsible work experience, such as in-person, telephone, and written contacts indicating effective communication and customer service skills.

Previous volunteer or paid experience in law enforcement, emergency medical services, military service, probation, counseling or similar work requiring extensive public contact is highly desirable.

Other requirements include:

• Must successfully complete a psychiatric evaluation and a Police Department background investigation and medical evaluation.
• Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
• Must be willing to work evening, graveyard, weekend, and holiday shifts for the 24 hour/day operational schedule.
• Must be able to obtain required Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification such as the Community Service Officer Academy, Jail Correction Course, which are conducted or recognized by the Berkeley Police Department, and accept and apply the principles learned in training.
• Must be physically able to perform the work including lifting heavy objects and controlling violent individuals, and possess the knowledge, skills and abilities for the successful completion of duties assigned to the position.

THE POSITION

The current opening is for a full-time position and is under the direction of the Police Records Supervisor. The Police Records Clerk will provide a wide variety of clerical, typing, and computer data entry tasks related to Police records; maintaining accurate Police statistics, records, and files; conducting business and transactions with the public, in person and by telephone; is available for occasional night and/or weekend duty as required, and performing other related work as required.

BASIC EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Responsible for all Police statistical record keeping.
• Perform a variety of data entry, typing, and clerical work related to all phases of the Police operation,  such as preparing forms, ordering department supplies, and making appointments.

PARKING ENFORCEMENT OFFICER/COMMUNITY SERVICES OFFICER

The Parking Enforcement Officer (PEO) performs a variety of law enforcement support duties with the majority of responsibilities involving enforcement of parking rules and regulations in an assigned area while driving a parking enforcement scooter or car or walking on foot. Duties include  reporting defective street signs, pavement markings and parking meters; providing information to the public concerning city geography, location of buildings, public transit stations and stops, and city functions and offices, impounding and providing for the storage of vehicles as necessary, responding to low priority city ordinance violations, assisting with simple evidence collection as needed, assisting with report taking as necessary, and performing related work as required to assist the patrol staff.   

The PEO will use a computer to make entries, update and make corrections to information and keep a variety of detailed logs and files, while also using a variety of law enforcement communication equipment.  In addition to issuing warnings and citations, the PEO may testify in court regarding citations issued and other events.  These duties will be performed under general supervision and when assigned, working with other staff. The majority of the workday will be spent on the field (i.e., outside) in various weather conditions.

A typical schedule is four 10-hour days per week including weekends, nights, and holidays.  The PEO is a physically demanding position as stooping, lifting, kneeling and reaching overhead and forward is required daily.

Under direct supervision, Wastewater Collection Systems Workers perform a variety of routine to skilled work in the construction, modification, maintenance, and repair of City infrastructure, including wastewater collection, stormwater and drainage, and related systems. The successful candidate will use and operate a variety of manual and power tools and light to heavy power-driven equipment to perform skilled and specialized work on drainage, collection, and related systems, and appurtenances, and performs related work as required. The department may hire at either the I or the II level depending on the skills, certifications, licenses held by candidates in the pool of qualified applicants.

As a Moraga Police Officer, you will be required to respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service; enforce laws and ordinances; monitor and control traffic; prevent crime; administer first aid when needed;  make arrests;  serve warrants and subpoenas;  interview victims and witnesses; interrogate suspects; process crime scenes for evidence; process and transport prisoners; investigate crimes and prepare comprehensive written reports; testify in court; present cases for prosecution to the District Attorney’s office; speak before public groups on job related topics and provide other services as needed.
