Under supervision of the Grounds Supervisor and under direction of the Maintenance II, Parks and Grounds lead person, incumbents in this classification work individually or as a member of a parks and grounds crew in the upkeep of City parks, medians, and satellite facilities including bus, equipment, and flora; perform related work as required.

MAINTENANCE TRAINEE – PARKS & GROUNDS

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

Maintenance Trainee – Is an entry-level trainee position. Incumbents learn to perform the full scope of duties of the Maintenance I class. This class is alternately staffed with Maintenance I and incumbents may advance to the higher-level class after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher-level class.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Inspect, clean, repair, and maintain City parks and trail system to ensure facilities are safe and usable; inspect, clean, and stock park restrooms; remove refuse from City garbage cans.
• Plant, cultivate, and provide upkeep for City landscapes and parks; mow lawns, replant vegetation, and prune trees, shrubs, and ground covers.
• Prepare and apply pesticides, growth regulators, and fertilizers; identify and appropriately label the containers when using these materials; document materials used.
• Paint, sandblast, or otherwise remove graffiti from public properties; paint interiors/exteriors.
• Attend technical and safety on-the-job training sessions; carry out what is learned in the classroom/tailgate training on the job; fill out accident reports if involved in an accident.
• Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools used in landscaping, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, concrete work, and welding activities.
• Operate and maintain various pieces of medium to heavy equipment including trucks, tractors, chippers, backhoes, skiploaders, mowers, sandblasters, and trailers.
• Inspect irrigation systems; repair and renovate the systems by rebuilding and/or installing timers, clocks, wires, pipes, joints, valves, and heads.
• Control weeds throughout the City.

MAINTENANCE I – PARKS & GROUNDS

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

The Maintenance I classification represents the journey-level within the Parks and Grounds Maintenance class series. Individuals within this class exhibit comprehensive proficiency in independently carrying out a spectrum of Parks & Grounds maintenance responsibilities. This entails not only performing tasks such as inspecting, cleaning, repairing, and maintaining City parks, landscape areas, and trail systems, but also making informed decisions regarding safety and usability. The Maintenance I role stands apart from Maintenance II, the lead-level in the series, as Maintenance II holds responsibility for overseeing the tasks performed by a crew engaged in parks and grounds maintenance.

StopWaste is hiring an Energy Council Program Services Specialist to work on Bay Area Regional Energy Network (BayREN) programs. The position will conduct community outreach and engage with stakeholders to make energy upgrades and electrify multifamily and single family buildings in Alameda County and the larger Bay Area. POLICE ASSISTANT

Salary Range: $19.85 to $30.87/hour; temporary part-time, non-benefitted position, DOE

DEFINITION

The Police Assistant is a civilian, non-sworn, uniformed position that is responsible for a variety of customer service-based interactions with the community. Duties include non-hazardous enforcement of municipal parking laws and regulations as well as clerical front counter tasks related to phone and walk-in contacts at the police department.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Administrative Assistant. Projects are assigned, and the person usually works with very little supervision. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/DUTIES

• Handle confidential administrative duties at the front desk.
• Answer/forward all incoming phone calls.
• The ability to multi task phones with walk-in traffic
• Perform a variety of research & staff work; prepare reports.
• Maintain records using computers.
• Maintain filing system.
• Coordinate Parking Permits for business employees.
• Receive and respond to complaints and reports of routine parking incidents from the public.
• Respond to public complaint of abandoned vehicles; document and schedule tows for abandoned vehicles; and ensures proper disposition of illegally parked vehicles; patrols city streets and issues citations on vehicles parked in an unlawful manner.
• Assist in organizing and coordinating department events and community outreach programs.
• Manage office supplies and equipment inventory, placing orders as needed.

• As required testifies in court.

QUALIFICATIONS

Program Assistant - Receptionist

Salary Range: $17.64 - $29.22/hour, depending on experience.

DEFINITION

Perform a wide variety of general clerical and/or operational support duties at the Danville Community Center and Senior Center, such as serve as a receptionist, operate a telephone system and assist/direct callers and visitors according to established procedures.

• This is a part-time temporary, non-benefitted position.
• 10-20 hours per week; not-to-exceed 950 hours per calendar year.

SUPERVISION

General supervision is received from the Administrative Assistant with indirect supervision from the Program Supervisor. May exercise supervision of part-time personnel and volunteers as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Essential duties are inclusive of, but not limited to the following:

• Deal directly with the public and internal staff.
• Provide information to the walk-in public.
• Register participants and support facility reservations using Active Net software. 
• Assist at the Danville Senior Center front desk as needed.
• Provide administrative support on special projects, as assigned.

• Assist in proofreading the Activity Guide and other marketing materials.

• Communicate with a variety of programming staff to resolve customer inquiries.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be able to handle multiple tasks, have strong computer skills and excellent customer service skills. Must be able to work a flexible schedule throughout the year.

Knowledge of:

• Correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
• Modern office methods, procedures and equipment, including office automation hardware and software.

Public Health Nurse: is the entry level in this class series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of public health nursing duties in assigned program areas. Join the City of Berkeley's Planning and Development Department in its effort to protect the health, safety, and welfare of citizens by enforcing building codes and regulations. As a Certified Building Inspector I or II, you will perform skilled inspection work in the enforcement of building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, zoning and related codes and regulations that govern new building and housing construction, additions, alterations, repairs and use of existing buildings. This work includes resolving problems and complaints to final resolution.

These classifications differ in that the Building Inspector I works under closer supervision and performs less complex inspection work than the Building Inspector II.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities is:
Equivalent to graduation from high school and experience as specified below.

• Building Inspector I:
  • One year of full-time experience as a building inspector with a public agency, OR
  • Four years of full-time experience as a journey level carpenter, electrician, plumber, building plans examiner, public works inspector or permit specialist, OR
  • Three years of full-time experience in the building construction field as a licensed general, plumbing, electrical or mechanical contractor, OR
  • Completion of a two year AA program or equivalent in construction technology or a related field and a minimum of four ICC certificates including building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical.
• Building Inspector II:
  • Three years of full time experience in building inspection work with a public agency.

Other requirements include possession of a valid International Code Council (ICC) Commercial and Residential Building Inspector Certificate or equivalent. In addition, Building Inspector II requires possession of a valid ICC Commercial and Residential Electrical Inspector Certification or equivalent. Equivalency shall be determined by the building official in accordance with state law. Required certifications must be maintained as a condition of employment.

Incumbents in both positions must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, maintenance of a valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record is required.
