The City of Berkeley is now accepting applications for Assistant Inspector in the Building & Safety Division of the Planning Department! This is a temporary, two-year position with an option for a third year upon approval by the Building Official, once certain criteria and milestones are met during the initial two years.

The Assistant Inspector will learn, in phases, every aspect of the building inspection process under the tutelage of the Building Inspection Section and Permit Service Center staff. This training will include learning and understanding the building permit review and issuance process, gaining and cultivating good customer service skills, studying and learning how to enforce the California and City of Berkeley Building Standards Codes, and acquiring proper building inspection techniques.

Upon approval from the Building Official, the Assistant Inspector will have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills by performing inspections in the field throughout the City of Berkeley as allowed by State regulations and under the guidance of a Building Inspector as assigned. These inspections will gradually increase in scope and difficulty as new skills and knowledge are acquired and confidence grows. It is expected that the Assistant Inspector will acquire an ICC Residential Building Inspector (ICC B1) certification by the end of year one and an ICC Commercial Building Inspector (ICC B2) certification by the end of the two-year position. At the end of the term and upon Building Official approval, the Assistant Inspector will have the option of promoting into the role of Building Inspector I (certified).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from high school and:

1. Two years of full-time paid experience in one of the following: 
   • Building, civil, or architectural design drafting;
   • Building, housing, or home inspection;
   • Code enforcement;
   • Permit processing;
   • Performing carpentry, electrical, heating and refrigeration, plumbing, or similar work; OR
2. Three years of full-time experience in support of building inspections, housing inspections, or code enforcement; OR
3. Completion of two years of education in a recognized college or university with completion of 12 semester or 16 quarter units in any of the following or similar areas: civil or structural engineering, construction technology, design, inspection technology, architectural drafting, mechanical or, electrical engineering.

Other requirements: Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill job responsibilities. When driving on city business, the incumbent is required to maintain a valid California driver's license as well as a satisfactory driving record.

The Human Resources Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Mail Services Driver.  ­­­­­­
 
In general, Mail Services Drivers sort and deliver County and United States mail; operate, adjust, monitor, and maintain mail processing and related equipment; and perform a wide variety of complex and specialized tasks related to the receipt and delivery of mail.
 
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

• Sort mail, flats, packages, and other materials according to various categories.
• Prepare mail, packages, flats, and other materials for delivery by bundling, wrapping, and weighing.
• Operate mail processing machines such as inserters, postage metering machines, and bundling machines.
• Arrange service and repair calls.
• Maintain records of production and provide information for billing purposes.
• Deliver and pick up mail, packages, freight, and other materials to and from various County agencies and offices on foot or by motor vehicle on established routes and time schedules. 
• Lift and carry heavy packages and move mail and other items using hand trucks or other moving equipment.
• Receive and deliver locked money bags between County departments and monitor related records.
• Maintain working and storage areas in a clean and orderly manner.
• Allocate the cost of metered mail to County budget cost centers.

The ideal candidate will be energetic, customer service oriented, a self-starter, and a team player.  In addition, the ideal candidate will possess a good driving record, free of moving violations, have a good record of attendance and punctuality, possess exceptional organizational skills, have strong communication skills, have exceptional customer service skills, and possess the ability to work effectively in a close-contact, team environment.

License: Possession of a California class C driver license or equivalent.
 
Physical Requirement: Must possess the physical strength to lift boxes of supplies and mail bags weighing up to 70 pounds. Must have enough stamina to stand and walk for several hours.

The City of Lincoln is hiring for the position of Maintenance Worker I/II within the Streets Division of the Public Works Department.  Under general supervision, this position performs the full array of duties assigned to classes in the Maintenance Worker series including maintenance, construction and equipment operation work in one or more Public Works divisions; occasionally assists in the training of lower-level Maintenance Workers; and performs other related duties as required.

Maintenance Worker I

The Maintenance Worker I is the entry level class responsible for a wide variety of maintenance and construction tasks. This classification is alternatively staffed with Maintenance Worker II and incumbents may advance to the higher-level after gaining experience and demonstrating a level of proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher-level class.

Maintenance Worker II

The Maintenance Worker II is the journey level class responsible for a wide variety of maintenance and construction tasks. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Senior Maintenance Worker in that the latter performance the more complex assignments and lead responsibilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED

The Maintenance Worker I receives general supervision from a Public Works Supervisor.  Incumbents of this class do not routinely exercise supervision.  The Maintenance Worker II receives general supervision from a Public Works Supervisor. May exercise technical and functional supervision over assigned staff. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Include but are not limited to the following:

• Performs maintenance, repair, construction, equipment operation and installation work in streets, water, sewers, refuse collection, parks and buildings.

• Parks and Buildings: Maintains lawns, shrubs, and trees; assists in spraying of herbicides and pesticides; cuts, sprays and removes weeds; clears brush and debris; assists with planting and maintenance of landscaped areas; installs, maintains, repairs and programs irrigation systems; cleans and maintains parks and city buildings; assists in the performance of minor carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting and remodeling tasks.
• Solid Waste: Operates a variety of collection vehicles and equipment including front, rear and side loaders in the collection and transportation of residential and commercial refuse; drives to landfill site when vehicle is full and unloads material; evaluates and updates assigned routes; cleans, maintains and inspects assigned vehicles; maintains daily logs.
• Fills out reports and work orders; climbs or uses hydraulic aerial devices to top, trim, reshape, strip, treat and remove trees; operates airport fueling vehicles; responds to after-hours call-outs if assigned.

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot and cold. The incumbent may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals, pesticides or herbicides which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, operate hydraulic aerial devices, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work with constant interruptions.

Knowledge of: Practices, techniques and materials used in maintenance, construction and repair of streets, buildings, parks and water treatment facilities; knowledge of the City street system; applicable federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations; operating characteristics and safety requirements for operation of trucks, refuse vehicles and other heavy and light equipment; defensive driving; proper lifting procedures; methods and techniques for record keeping; basic principles of mathematics; occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.

Skill to: Safely and effectively operate a variety of maintenance equipment, tools and materials.

Ability to: Perform maintenance, repair and installation of asphalt, signs, concrete, water mains and storm drains; drive and operate trucks and heavy construction equipment; respond to issues and concerns from the community; interpret, explain and apply applicable laws, codes and regulations; operate a variety of construction equipment, vehicles and power and hand tools; perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time; work at substantial heights; respond to after-hours call-outs if assigned; organize, prioritize and follow-up on work assignments; work independently and as part of a team; make sound decisions within established guidelines; analyze a complex issue, and develop and implement an appropriate response; follow written and oral directions; observe safety principles and work in a safe manner; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

The process may include an in-basket exercise, individual interviews, panel interviews and/or other related components.  Only those candidates who have the best combination of qualifications in relation to the requirements and duties of the position will continue in the selection process.
