The City of San Rafael Fire Department is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Fire Cadet.  This opportunity is designed for individuals who are pursuing a career in the fire service and want to gain hands-on experience in a professional firefighting environment.  As a Fire Cadet, you will work closely with our experienced Firefighter-Paramedics, Prevention and Mitigation staff to learn about fire department operations, fire prevention administration, emergency response procedures, and community engagement. 

This is a temp/seasonal positions, limited to 1,000 hours worked within a fiscal year (July 1 thru June 30) that receive no City benefits other than what is mandated by the State of California.  This cadetship is expected to last one year.  The exact duration may vary based on department needs and cadet performance.

Key Responsibilities:

• Emergency Response Support:  Provide support services to crews at prolonged incidents including fires, medical emergencies, rescues, and hazardous materials incidents.  Participate in drills and exercises to enhance your understanding of emergency response protocols.
• Training Participation:  Attend training sessions, workshops, and skill-building exercises to learn about fire suppression techniques, search and rescue operations, medical aid procedures, and other essential fire skills.
• Equipment and Facility Maintenance:  Assist in the maintenance and inspection of firefighting equipment, tools, and apparatus.  Learn proper care and upkeep of gear and tools to ensure readiness for emergency situations.  Assist in the tracking, organizing, and dispensing of inventory.
• Community Outreach:  Participate in community events, educational programs, and public demonstrations to promote fire safety awareness and engage with the local community.  Serve as an ambassador for the fire department and provide information about fire prevention and preparedness.
• Administrative Support:  Assist with administrative tasks such as record-keeping, data entry, and inventory management.  Gain exposure to the behind-the scenes operations of a fire department. 
• Physical Fitness:  Work towards maintaining a level of physical fitness necessary for performing firefighting duties.  Engage in physical training and conditioning activities as directed by the department.
• Professional Development:  Actively seek opportunities for learning and growth within the fire service.  Take part in discussions with experienced firefighters to gain insights into career pathways and development strategies.

Desired Qualifications:

• Recent High School Grad preferred.
• Previous participation in a recognized firefighting explorer program, academy, fire science program, or related program or activity.
• Basic knowledge of firefighting principles and practices.
• Strong commitment to safety and adherence to protocols.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as adhere to the chain of command.
• Physical fitness and ability to perform basic physical tasks, continuously move +/- 25 pounds, and lift up to 50 pounds.

Summary:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of custodial tasks and provides oversight of rental groups, in accordance with District policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist patrons and prospective participants on the phone and in-person
• Assist permit groups with set-up and breakdown of tables, chairs, and other equipment
• Promptly open and unlock facilities or close and secure facilities as scheduled
• Complete facility condition forms following permit group use and incident reports as needed
• Notify management concerning need for major repairs or additions
• Turn athletic field lights off and on for sports groups
• Sell and scan admission tickets special events and/or theater performances

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Sweep floors, vacuum carpets, and dust or polish furniture, fixtures, and equipment
• Wash windows, clean restrooms, replenish supplies, and sanitize high touch areas often
• Empty waste receptacles and remove any trash or debris found throughout facility
• May assist with conducting recreation classes
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Happy Hollow Park & Zoo Recreation Leader Positions Available:
Candidates may need to work weekdays and weekends. Happy Hollow Park & Zoo shifts are typically 9:00 am-4:00 pm Sunday through Saturday, November through March, and 9:00 am-5:00 pm March through November, Sunday through Saturday. Saturday, Sunday, and Monday shifts are widely available, other weekday shifts have less availability. We currently do not offer afternoon-only shifts.

HHPZ is a 16-acre amusement park and Association of Zoo's & Aquariums (AZA) accredited zoo. HHPZ is open year-round catering to families with children. It operates eight amusement park rides, showcases various endangered species, and operates one of the oldest classical puppet theaters in California, as well as offering many other playgrounds and attractions emphasizing play and imagination in a natural conservation setting. HHPZ has the following positions available and all Recreation Leaders at HHPZ may be required to perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

HHPZ - ENTERTAINMENT: Entertainment staff are responsible for coordinating the production, scheduling, and performance of daily puppet shows. This position may include assisting with the fabrication of puppets, scenery and props; delivering improvisational performances; providing Happy Hollow mascot escorts around the park and offsite events; interacting with the Happy Hollow guests; and coordinating special events. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting in developing new and updating existing puppet shows, coordinating entertainment for the Crooked Meadow stage, working with the special events team to provide entertainment, and participating in the coordination of theater camps, classes and workshops; as well as performing routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning of entertainment production areas; performing daily safety checks in public and staff areas; and working weekends, evenings, and holidays during all climatic conditions, as assigned.

HHPZ - GUEST SERVICES: This position is responsible for ensuring exceptional customer service, reflecting a positive attitude, and welcoming all guests upon arrival to Happy Hollow. A Guest Services staff must be detail oriented, willing to take initiative, and enjoy working in a team environment. This position will go through a tiered training including Turnstiles, Admissions, Membership, and Guest Services; to ensure a well-rounded host for the customer service desk. Additionally, this position leads and monitors the performance of all cashiers, and front gate staff. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to; selling park admissions, memberships, turnstile operations, birthdays, group reservations, assisting lost parties, administer first aid, creating daily operating schedules, ensuring daily cleanliness of front gate area, ordering supplies, and providing administrative assistance.

HHPZ - PICNIC BASKET & DOUBLE H CATERING: This position is responsible for assisting the Cook & Food Service Manager in managing the Food and Beverage operations at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo's Picnic Basket restaurant, on and off-site catering, and remote concession stands. General duties include assisting in the training; cashiering, developing and maintaining relationships with work experience program volunteers, assist with developing seasonal food and beverage menus; overseeing food preparation quality and safety; and developing and maintaining an attractive and consistent presentation. Training will be provided.

HHPZ - REVENUE: The Revenue Team is responsible for cash handling and securing funds in accordance with the City of San Jose Policy. This position may include, but are not limited to, accurate counting of cash and coins, preparing daily money distribution to cashiers, ability to maintain effective communication with employees and customers to express oneself clearly and concisely, closing out cashiers, ability to problem solve, prepare banking deposits, filling, and emptying coin change machines, follow written and oral instructions, and willing to work weekends and holidays.

The City of San Rafael Fire Department is recruiting to fill the position of Quality Improvement Program Manager.  The primary responsibility of this position is to develop and maintain a Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) program for the approximately 70 paramedics and EMTs of the San Rafael Fire Department. Other duties include assisting with the department’s year-round continuing education program. The successful applicant will work closely with and be supervised by San Rafael Fire’s medical director and the assigned EMS Battalion Chief.

Principal Job Responsibilities:

Implement and maintain a Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) program for the paramedics and EMTs of The San Rafael Fire Department. Specific responsibilities include:

• Planning and implementing the overall structure of the program in conjunction with the medical director, EMS Battalion Chief and other stake holders.
• Attending departmental, county, state and national EMS meetings and conferences as assigned.
• Completion and submission of CQI improvement reports to county and state regulatory agencies.
• Quantitative analysis of patient care activities through use of our electronic medical record as indicated under the overall CQI plan or when specifically requested by the department.
• Developing a program to assess the quality of paramedic care and documentation with a special emphasis on newer and probationary paramedics.
• Formally responding to quality concerns raised by patients, recipient hospitals or other EMS agencies.
• Ability to perform technical and professional writing, manage and manipulate data on a basic spreadsheet platform, and develop and present charts and graphical information.
• Keeping the department abreast of CQI activities through regular meetings and reports

Organize, provide and assess efficacy of a program of continuing paramedic education for the paramedics and EMTs of San Rafael Fire. Specific responsibilities include:

• Assist with planning the overall structure and curriculum of the educational program.
• Delivering original, up to date, paramedic/EMT specific educational content in the form of lectures, CQI case review conferences, skills workshops, practical exercises, simulation activities and BLS/ ALS recertification
• Scheduling guest lecturers when needed to achieve educational goals of the department
• Assist medics in keeping their licenses current by maintaining attendance records and provisioning of Continuing Education Certificates
• Assist with team building and encourage communications amongst all stakeholders.

About the Position

Positions in this classification perform work in the organization and implementation of a wide variety of recreation activities.  

The work schedule will be Monday-Thursday 4:30pm-9:15pm but may vary based on the needs of the City.

The Program Coordinator classification is the top-level position in the Recreation Leader Series.  Advancement from Recreation Leader Level II to Program Coordinator requires 500 hours of work experience at Recreation Leader Level II, or equivalent experience.

May provide functional supervision to a Recreation Leader I or II as assigned.  Receives general supervision from a full-time Recreation Department staff member.

Essential Duties

• Provide evening customer support, which includes front desk coverage at the Adult Community Center, processing registrations and payments, processing refunds and transfers, answering phone, contacting customers through emails and calls.

• Room set ups and break downs.

• Assist with program marketing including social media and flyers.

Swim Instructor - Lifeguard I/II

Position Details

Under close supervision, maintain constant watch over a public swimming pool facility to enforce regulations and prevent accidents, assist swimmers in distress and provide emergency and routine first aid. Create a safe and positive atmosphere for all participants and perform basic facility maintenance duties.

Examples of Duties

• Actively scan the pool, deck and locker rooms for safety and potential hazards and address the situation properly to remedy it
• Recognize and respond to emergencies in accordance with the facility emergency action plan
• Know and enforce all facility rules, policies, and procedures while providing a safe and enjoyable environment for all patrons
• Perform daily inspections or equipment and facility; correct and/or report any and all unsafe conditions to supervisor
• Teach swim lessons and aquatic classes to a variety of skill and age levels; evaluate participants according to program outlines and goals
• Perform other duties as assigned

Working Conditions

Work is at the Aquatics Center at San Bruno Park and is performed both indoors and out, with exposure to heat, sun, water, noise, dust, pollens and chemicals/cleaning agents used in an aquatics complex. There is potential for slip hazards when working near water and exposure to blood borne pathogens when rendering first aid. Working hours will include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Supplemental Position Information:

Part-time temporary employees serve in an at-will capacity and understand that service with the City may be dismissed at any time. This position does not provide any benefits, apart from paid sick leave. In accordance with the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014, all temporary, part-time, and seasonal employees, who on or after July 1, 2015, work in California for 30 or more days within a year from the commencement of employment are entitled to paid sick leave for prescribed purposes.  Employees will accrue one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked and are entitled to use accrued sick days beginning on the 90th day of employment. Employees may use up to 24 hours (or 3 days) of accrued sick leave in each year of employment.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

· Monitors custodial work in and around recreation facilities; empties trash containers and picks up litter; cleans and stocks restrooms; cleans floors, walls, furniture, windows and other interior and exterior elements; replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes and air filters; reports the need for major maintenance or repair.

· Monitors and maintains the municipal swimming pool system; verifies pool chemistry through testing on a scheduled basis; ensures that filtration and lighting systems are working properly and that the pool remains clean and safe for public usage.

· Inspects and performs semi-skilled maintenance work on pool, parks, play areas and other recreation facilities; performs basic painting, plumbing and carpentry; removes graffiti and repairs vandalism.

· Mows and rakes grass areas; edges grass areas and removes weeds from landscaped and grass areas.

· Conditions soil in planted areas; plants, waters, fertilizes, trims and removes annual and perennial plantings and maintains landscaped areas in an attractive condition.

· Prepares ball fields and other organized play areas for use on a scheduled basis; installs nets, goal posts and lines fields as required.

· Prunes hedges, shrubs and trees in parks and street areas; removes trees as required.

· Maintains playground equipment in a safe operating condition.

· Plants, trims, waters, stakes and maintains City trees; removes dead or unwanted trees.

· Operates a variety of vehicles and specialized landscape equipment.

· Inspects and performs service, minor maintenance and repair on a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles and equipment.

· Maintains logs and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school.

Experience: Preferred six months of parks, and/or landscape maintenance or repair.

License: Must possess a valid California class C driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record. 

Skill in: Performing semiskilled construction, modification, maintenance, and repair work on a variety of facilities, buildings, grounds, and equipment.

SALARY AND HOURS: $31.57 – $33.15– $34.80 – $36.56 - $38.38 per hour. Part-time position - Paid sick leave benefit available. Initial appointments are generally made at the first step of this five-step scale. 20-hour work week schedule with shifts on weekend mornings (Saturday and Sunday) and occasional weekday afternoons during sports seasons. Must be able to work on weekends and occasional holidays throughout the entire year.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  Graduation from high school or a GED equivalent.  College or university work in recreation or physical education or a related field is desirable.

Experience:  Previous experience working with recreation or youth programs, and/or coaching or playing popular games.

Ability to:  Possession of or ability to obtain prior to completion of twelve months of employment First Aid and Infant/Child CPR certificates.  Certifications shall be maintained during employment.

Knowledge of:  Youth recreational programs and sports programs; playground safety; leadership skills required to effectively lead youth recreation and sports programs; and effective communication skills appropriate for dealing with both youth and adults.

Skill in:  Lead and motivate participants in various recreation programs and exercise patience with all participants; make effective judgments regarding the well-being of the participants and the program; communicate effectively with individuals of all ages; establish and maintain relationships with those contacted during the course of work; and maintain discipline and control in an active environment.

SALARY AND HOURS: 

$ 18.28 - $ 19.19 - $ 20.16 - $ 21.16 - $ 22.22 per hour.  This is a part-time position with paid sick leave available.  Initial appointments are generally made at the first step of this five-step scale.  Hours will range from 5 to 15 hours per week during the academic school year and 20-25 hours per week during camp seasons.  Hours are generally scheduled during the following times, with additional hours available for special events:

Youth Program

            2:00 PM – 6:00 PM Monday through Friday (Academic school year)

8:00 AM – 6:00 PM Monday through Friday (Summer, Winter and Spring Camp)
