ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Redwood City invites you to apply for the position of High School or College Summer Inter for the Community Development Department. This employment opportunity is excellent for a well- organized person seeking some summer work experience and getting exposure to government and specifically to work in Community Development. The primary responsibility of this position is to help with data entry and document preparation. The position will also be able to shadow planners and building staff on counter duties, attend meetings and assist staff on planning projects as schedules permit. 

This Summer Intern position is a non-benefit casual position. This casual position work schedule will vary (as needed) between 15-20 hours per week, not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year.

Academic Experience

Interns with relevant coursework in the following fields are encouraged to consider assignments in the Public Works Department:

Preferred candidates will have strong skills in Microsoft office,  GIS mapping, GPS marking, and Autocad are desired, but not required.

Interns may assist with the following:

• Survey utilities, property lines and sensitive species areas in Town owned open spaces or rights-of-way using GPS.
• Assist with developing database and mapping using ArcGIS.
• Assist with implementation of the Town’s computerized maintenance management system.
• Assisting with development of Capital Improvement Programs for sewer, water, and street departments.
• Assist with Public Outreach and content development. 

Desirable Skills
Surveying, familiarity with Trimble GPS units or other similar equipment, GIS, writing skills, able to work independently, good research skills, able to work outdoors and in heavily vegetated areas on steep terrain, , work safely.

Students seeking academic credit for their internship must check with their respective school for requirements.  If credit is desired the Town will make a reasonable effort to assist in meeting your school requirements.
 
Compensation
Interns will be paid for their services between $25 to $30 based on skills and background.  Flexible weekly hours will range from part time to full time hours, depending upon assignment.

Restrictions
Internships are limited to no more than 960 hours in a fiscal year and are non-benefitted positions.

Projects for 2024 include:

• Communications – Assist with developing innovative and relevant content for posting on City-administered social media sites, research and work with departments in developing articles for publication on the City’s website and print newsletter, and assist with aspects of video production including storyboarding, camera work, and script-writing.

• IT – Have some familiarity with programs such as Windows, Active Directory, Office/Microsoft 365. Must be able to disassemble and reassemble a PC. Projects will consist of adding and editing AD and email accounts and sorting and organizing hardware components. Some daily tasks will include responding to help desk requests and making basic equipment repairs and replacements.

• Human Resources - Offering learning opportunities by following a full recruitment and onboarding process. Assist with website updating; maintaining employee records; the conversion of physical records/forms to electronic format; and conducting research and analysis on HR-related topics.

• Public Works (Utilities) – Provide support to the City's Public Works Department - Utilities Division with various engineering projects in drinking water distribution, water resources, sanitary sewer collection, and storm drainage. Primary assignment will focus on mapping and geolocating drinking water facilities to comply with new state regulatory compliance.  Secondary assignments may include field engineering support on construction of capital utility projects and assisting on various engineering reports and studies.

Applicants must be college students currently enrolled in and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university in a related field (e.g. public administration, public policy, business, planning, library science, environmental studies, engineering, sustainability). Undergraduate candidates must have a minimum of 48 semester units or equivalent completed.  Applicants should also be self-motivated, have excellent interpersonal skills, able to use Microsoft Office software, demonstrate good research ability and have the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. 

SALARY AND HOURS: The salary range for Interns is $20.00 per hour, 15-18 hours per week over a 12-week period.  The start date is flexible depending on the student’s availability.

Description

The Town of Colma Recreation Services Department is currently accepting applications for Recreation Leaders for Summer 2024.  The Recreation Department provides programs and activities for Colma residents of all ages ranging from infants to seniors. Program elements include fitness, enrichment, cultural events, special events, sporting events, trips, and community events. It is the goal of the Recreation Department to offer a balanced program ensuring all elements are offered to all age groups throughout the year. Next Generation Regional Internship Program

In conjunction with the Two-County (San Mateo and Santa Clara) Regional Internship Program, the City of South San Francisco offers paid summer internship opportunities for current undergraduate and graduate college students who are interested in contributing to the community. An internship with the City of South San Francisco offers valuable, real-world job experience in a local government setting. Through this internship, you will gain exposure to a wide variety of programs and services, while enhancing and sharpening your writing, presentation, research, analysis, and critical thinking skills. As part of the Two-County Regional Internship Program, this experience will also be supplemented with learning forums and access to professionals in your interested field.

Project Description

The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division is seeking seasonal Election Vote Center Representatives (Office Assistant I) to assist in the upcoming March 5, 2024 Presidential Primary Election. Vote Centers offer in-person voting, voter registration, and additional services to the public up to a month before the election.
 
We are currently seeking dedicated and hard-working individuals for the temporary, full-time positions of Vote Center Representatives to be hired for the following duties:

• Use an iPad tablet to verify voter eligibility.
• Provide information about the current election.
• Guide voters on use of electronic ballot marking devices.
• Operate office equipment including Windows Laptops, printers, and iPad tablets.
• Provide in-person voter assistance to register to vote and cast a ballot.
• Issue ballots using Windows laptops.
• Maintain accurate files and records.
• Secure Election materials and supplies to maintain the integrity of the election.

The Elections Division is an exciting, fast-paced environment, especially as elections approach. Vote Centers will be open for two, four, eleven, and thirty days. Those hired can expect to work approximately 7 – 35 days including training and onboarding. Vote Center Representatives will work eight (8) hours per day in-person once the site opens. Typical hours are 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with the addition of at least one weekend (March 2-3, 2024). This assignment will include one setup day of at least four hours before opening the location. On Election Day, Vote Center Representatives will work from 6 a.m. - 10 p.m. or later.  
 
The hourly wage for this position starts at: $22.97. These positions will require working overtime, including long hours, weekends, evenings, and holidays.  

• Authorized time worked more than 40 hours in the workweek: compensated at the rate of one and one-half (1-1/2) times the straight-time rate.
• Hours worked on a holiday: compensated at the rate of one and one-half (1-1/2) times the straight-time rate as provided in the Overtime Section of this MOU for their work group.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have a minimum of one year of general clerical, office assistant, phone services or computer experience, experience with customer service, and a close attention to detail.
 
Critical skills for all Vote Center positions include the ability to prioritize work, coordinate several activities, organize and maintain accurate files and records, and understand and carry out oral and written directions. Several positions require fluency in Burmese, Cantonese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish and/or Tagalog/Filipino.
 
The position requires basic addition and subtraction. Vote Center Representatives must be proficient in the operation of a Windows computer, computer software, and applications. This position also requires the ability to operate standard office equipment, learn computer applications/software quickly and accurately, and serve members of the public.

Typical office hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. However, these positions may require working overtime, including long hours, weekends, evenings, and holidays.   (Any authorized time worked more than 40 hours in the workweek shall be considered overtime and shall be compensable at the rate of one and one-half (1-1/2) times the overtime worked.

Generally, extra-help employees who work on a holiday shall be compensated for such time worked at the rate of one and one-half (1 1/2) times the straight-time rate as provided in the Overtime Section of this MOU for their work group).
 
The selected individuals must be available for the entire employment period until the completion of their assignment.

This is an extra-help recruitment. Anyone may apply. Responses to the supplemental questions must be submitted in addition to our regular employment application form. This is a continuous recruitment. Based on the information in the application, a screening committee from the Elections Office will select those applicants whose education, experience, training, and knowledge most closely match the needs of the department. The Elections Division will contact qualified candidates for department interviews. Positions could be filled at any time.
