Under the general supervision of a Senior Engineer, the Associate Engineer position performs a variety of professional engineering, plan review, and inspection work.

Typical duties include, but are not limited to the following:
 

• Examine plans, perform calculations and review specifications for commercial, industrial, and residential buildings for compliance with the California Building Code, California Fire Code, California State Fire Marshal regulations, and applicable NFPA standards and local ordinances.
• Provide technical advice to consultants, architects, engineers, contractors, developers, department officers and staff, and the Fire Marshal on the application or interpretation of fire safety codes/regulations, and on the resolution of fire safety issues found in the preliminary design of buildings.
• Analyze and evaluate proposals for alternate materials, methods of construction, and/or variances to fire safety codes and regulations.
• Conduct field inspections to ensure that the finished construction complies with approved plans.

You are excited about this position because you will:

• Manages a section or division by planning, assigning, monitoring, and evaluating the work of subordinates. Reviews surveying or map requirements and resolves problems as needed. • Processes and checks subdivision map applications, plans, and survey records prepared by licensed land surveyors for technical and record information accuracy with respect to the California Subdivision Map Act and the San Francisco Subdivision
• Writes and checks boundary legal descriptions and performs other professional duties which require a licensed land surveyor.
• Manages horizontal and vertical control systems which may include use of Global Positioning System (GPS) monumentation/documentation program. Implements and maintains Geographic Information System (GIS) base map system.
• Updates codes and regulations and reviews proposed bills and budget, cost, and fee assessments. Makes regular contacts with the general public, other departments, contractors, private surveyors, and outside organizations relative to municipal mapping and survey.
• Prepares legislation to change official street legislation, approve subdivision maps, and refers same to the Board of Supervisors.
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

How to qualify

1. Four (4) years of experience supervising survey parties.
2. Possession of a valid California Professional Land Surveyor License, or a valid California Civil Engineer License (issued in 1981 or before).
3. Possession of a valid California driver license (at least Class C).

Note: At least one year of experience in county subdivision mapping is required for the position located in the Bureau of Street Use and Mapping at the Department of Public Works in addition to the Minimum Qualifications above.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Cyber Security: monitor and maintain security on infrastructure systems including IT security applications and appliances. Example: Microsoft security patching, updating appliance firmware, maintaining Cyber Security definitions, monitoring Anti-Spam solution, monitoring Cyber Security appliances, and recommending modifications to existing Cyber Security hardware, software, and overall security stance. DEFINITION

• OPERATOR I (COLLECTION)
  Under general supervision or direction, the Operator I (Collection) is responsible for the overall operation of the wastewater collections system, which includes the repair and maintenance of the sewer collection system and pump stations.
   
• OPERATOR II (COLLECTION)
  Under general direction, supervises the operation of the Collections System of the Wastewater Treatment Plant on a designated shift to ensure processing and discharge of wastewater which complies with performance standards of State regulatory agencies; perform any combination of tasks involved with inspection, construction, repair, and preventive, corrective and emergency maintenance of sanitary personnel; prepares logs and other records; performs maintenance tasks as required and other related duties as required.
   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION REQUIREMENTS

For the Collections System, ability to locate, detect cause, and correct sewer stoppages; detect and perform minor repairs and adjustments to sewer equipment; maintain pumps and related mechanical equipment; and report to work at any time during an emergency.  Perform electrical and mechanical repairs, maintenance work and modification to equipment used in a water quality control plant; use various mechanic’s tools with skill and accuracy; available for standby on sewer calls on a rotation basis; follow oral and written directions; maintain working relationships with other employees.  (See Physical Demands section as it relates to Essential Function Requirements.)

  • Respond to service requests, unclog mainline stoppages, and keep records on sewer line cleanings and state of existing problems within the Collections System
  • Repair mainline breaks, replace broken pipe and reconnect pipe sections
  • Operate power rodder, jet truck, backhoe and TV equipment
  • Conduct periodic inspections and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to wastewater pumping stations and equipment
  • Keep daily logs and records on equipment; makes reports to the supervisor
  • Provide technical assistance and prescribe work methods and safety procedures to maintenance workers and utility workers

The Capital Improvement Program (CIP) division is leading one of the largest public works programs in San José's history! ABOUT THE POSITION
If you’re looking to make a significant impact to the Gilroy community while advancing your career in civil engineering and project management, then look no further! The City of Gilroy is currently recruiting for a full-time Senior Civil Engineer or Project Manager (depending on qualifications and experience) for the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. In this exciting opportunity the incumbent will play a pivotal role in shaping infrastructure and overseeing key projects vital to the growth and development of the City of Gilroy. This role offers a unique blend of technical expertise, leadership, and strategic planning making it an ideal role an engineering professional looking to make tangible differences in the lives of the Gilroy residents.
 
The Senior Civil Engineer or Project Manager will work under the direction of the City Engineer and/or the Public Works Director and will lead the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Section. This supervisory position will lead a team of engineers and technicians in the implementation of the City’s CIP, including the planning, design, construction, and inspection of a variety of projects.  Responsibilities include supervising employees, directing complex professional-level field and office engineering assignments, developing strategies and schedules for implementing the CIP, assisting with CIP budgeting, and playing a significant role in making a difference in the community!

Both the Senior Civil Engineer and Project Manager classifications are exempt, mid-management level positions. The Project Manager classification is distinguished from the Senior Civil Engineer in that a professional engineer license is not required.

Public Works CIP projects involve planning, design, coordination with end users, bid package preparation, and construction management.  Therefore, exceptional organizational and project management skills are imperative to achieve department and City goals. Additionally, successful performance requires the ability to independently implement programs, projects, and policies in conformance with generally accepted standards, including possessing thorough knowledge of contract administration, project management principles and supervisory practices.

The Senior Civil Engineer or Project Manager will manage assigned staff and consultants and assist with budgeting tasks within the Engineering Division. Furthermore, the Senior Civil Engineer/ Project Manager will provide and participate in critical team leadership to ensure that all engineering services, goals, projects, and initiatives meet the high-performance standards of the Department and City.

The City of Brisbane will be sponsoring up to four summer internships this year.  Our internships are project-oriented and designed to give college students a good general overview of future employment opportunities and current issues in the Public Sector.  You will have the opportunity for exposure to various areas of City Administration during your internship and to network with fellow interns and participate in professional development activities in San Mateo County and/or Santa Clara County.

 

Projects for 2024 include:

 

• Communications – Assist with developing innovative and relevant content for posting on City-administered social media sites, research and work with departments in developing articles for publication on the City’s website and print newsletter, and assist with aspects of video production including storyboarding, camera work, and script-writing.

 

• IT – Have some familiarity with programs such as Windows, Active Directory, Office/Microsoft 365. Must be able to disassemble and reassemble a PC. Projects will consist of adding and editing AD and email accounts and sorting and organizing hardware components. Some daily tasks will include responding to help desk requests and making basic equipment repairs and replacements.

 

• Human Resources - Offering learning opportunities by following a full recruitment and onboarding process. Assist with website updating; maintaining employee records; the conversion of physical records/forms to electronic format; and conducting research and analysis on HR-related topics.

 

• Public Works (Utilities) – Provide support to the City's Public Works Department - Utilities Division with various engineering projects in drinking water distribution, water resources, sanitary sewer collection, and storm drainage. Primary assignment will focus on mapping and geolocating drinking water facilities to comply with new state regulatory compliance.  Secondary assignments may include field engineering support on construction of capital utility projects and assisting on various engineering reports and studies.

 

 

Applicants must be college students currently enrolled in and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university in a related field (e.g. public administration, public policy, business, planning, library science, environmental studies, engineering, sustainability). Undergraduate candidates must have a minimum of 48 semester units or equivalent completed.  Applicants should also be self-motivated, have excellent interpersonal skills, able to use Microsoft Office software, demonstrate good research ability and have the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. 

 

 

SALARY AND HOURS: The salary range for Interns is $20.00 per hour, 15-18 hours per week over a 12-week period.  The start date is flexible depending on the student’s availability.
