Role Overview

We’re seeking a candidate with experience in the areas of climate resilience and greenhouse gas emissions reduction; water quality and stormwater management; community and business empowerment; and strong program and staff management skills.

 

Under the direction of the Director and Assistant Director, the Sustainability Program Manager leads the six-member Climate Resilience team focused on reducing greenhouse gases in county operations, improving watershed water quality, implementing community resilience initiatives, and incorporating resilience in policy and planning documents. 

 

Responsibilities include overseeing implementation of the Government Operations Climate Action Plan; Stormwater Municipal Regional Permit compliance; County employee commute alternatives program; Green Business Program; and adaptation and resilience planning to address impact such as extreme heat, drought, sea level rise, and wildfire smoke. The role also involves overseeing program budget, grant administration, vendor contracts, and monitoring policy and program developments.

 

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, administer, and coordinate the activities of professional and technical staff involved in Climate Resilience work;
• Collaborate with multiple County departments, cities and community partners on local and regional climate resilience programs;
• Innovate new approaches to transform systems and empower County employees and communities to lead and act on climate issues.

 

As the Sustainability Program Manager – Climate Resilience, your responsibilities will include:

• Program and Staff Management – Set strategic direction, manage complex budgets, successfully oversee and deliver projects to completion, supervise and develop staff, and present to the County Executive’s Office and Board of Supervisors.
• Vendor & Contract Oversight – Manage vendor contracts, performance and budget.
• Community Empowerment – Develop and implement community-driven initiatives and resources with county departments and community partners to build climate resilience.
• Policy Development – Track laws, regulations, policy development and requirements to support climate resilience initiatives.

 

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a strategic results-driven leader demonstrating deep understanding of both emission reduction and climate adaptation strategies, with extensive experience in environmental sustainability and resilience planning. They have a proven track record of program and staff management, financial oversight including managing multi-million-dollar budgets, developing funding strategies, and achieving measurable outcomes. 

With a high level of political acumen, they can navigate complex issues and collaborate effectively with elected officials, County departments, and regional and community partners.

 

Strong communication skills are essential, as this role requires the ability to convey complex concepts clearly to diverse audiences. The candidate is passionate about designing and implementing programs that create tangible community benefits and empowerment. They excel at building strategic partnerships, stakeholder engagement, resolving community concerns, and facilitating large public initiatives.

 

The ideal candidate would have at least eight years of progressively responsible experience leading sustainability programs and managing staff. A collaborative and innovative approach to leadership, combined with a strong commitment to public service and environmental sustainability, is essential for success in this role.

 

 

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.

A typical way to qualify is three years of experience in the field of sustainability or resource conservation which has included complex program implementation and coordination.

The Sustainability Aide is an entry-level position that provides essential program, technical, customer service, and field support to the Sustainability Division’s solid waste, water conservation, energy, and electric vehicle (EV) charging programs.

This role is ideal for individuals interested in environmental programs who demonstrate strong communication skills, attention to detail, and an interest in data-driven problem-solving within a local government setting.

This is a part-time position, up to 29 hours per week, not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year. Work hours are flexible within City business hours; two to three days per week is preferred.

 

Primary Responsibilities

• Provide customer and permit counter service by responding to public, contractor, and developer inquiries related to solid waste, recycling, water conservation, energy, and EV charging programs.
• Process and review Construction and Demolition (C&D) permit applications and plans, including verification of recycling requirements, authorized haulers, and Green Halo documentation.
• Support sustainability-related development review, including solid waste space planning, trash and recycling enclosure requirements, and coordination with other City departments.
• Assist with data collection, entry, tracking, and basic analysis for waste, recycling, edible food recovery, water use, debris, energy, and EV infrastructure programs.
• Support compliance and implementation of State regulatory requirements, including SB 1383 edible food recovery and organic waste diversion programs.
• Assist with GIS-based sustainability mapping, including trash and recycling enclosure mapping for development projects and updates to sustainability-related maps in coordination with the GIS team.
• Provide program support for energy and infrastructure projects, such as streetlighting replacement projects in coordination with Southern California Edison (SCE).
• Assist with sustainability budgeting support, including tracking program expenditures, maintaining records, and supporting basic budget documentation.
• Support public outreach and education efforts, including staffing events, conducting surveys, and preparing materials and documentation.
• Maintain accurate records in City databases, prepare spreadsheets, draft basic reports and memos, and assist with routine administrative tasks as needed.

The City of Sunnyvale is currently recruiting for a Field Technician to join the Environmental Services Department team! The Environmental Services Department provides comprehensive and innovative utility services for Sunnyvale's residents, businesses and facilitates initiatives to achieve the City's sustainability objectives. The Department brings together technical, operational, and administrative professional disciplines to form its dedicated and dynamic team.

City of Sunnyvale Field Technicians work in the field when assigned to the Compliance Inspection group in the Regulatory Programs Division. Field Technicians work under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Compliance Inspector primarily in the field collecting samples from industries, restaurants and the sanitary sewer collection system in order to determine compliance with local and federal discharge limits. The Field Technicians in Compliance Inspection work closely with the Environmental Compliance Inspectors to regulate dischargers. Field technicians also perform sampling at designated drinking water locations.

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in environmental science, including courses in chemistry, biology or other related science may be substituted for one year of experience.

 

Licenses/Certificates

 

Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver's license and a safe driving record.

About the Position: Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) is seeking three interns in the Natural Resources Department: one Water Resources Intern and two Conservation Biology Interns.  Under the guidance of our professional biological staff, these subject-matter focused internships will provide training in a broad range of common natural resource management techniques and environmental analyses.  Internships are open to applications from current students or recent graduates (within the last 12 months).  The expected start date for these positions is in April 2026. 

Water Resources Intern 

• The responsibilities of the intern will focus on a long-term aquatic habitat assessment and restoration project. Additional smaller projects may be assigned in other natural resource subject areas. Responsibilities will include scientific literature reviews, GIS mapping and modeling, data analysis, organizing and performing field work, writing reports, and science communication.  Successful candidates will have an understanding of the hydrologic or ecological principles of wetlands and streams, experience with ArcGIS Pro, the ability to collect, organize, and interpret data, and written communication skills.  Experience with data analysis in R, Python, or Microsoft Excel is preferred, and supplemental training time will be available. Experience with field work in remote areas is desirable.

Conservation Biology Intern (2 positions)

• The responsibilities of the intern include identifying plants in the field following plant survey and collection protocols; providing biological monitoring during construction and other ground-disturbing activities; GIS mapping, researching and preparing written summaries of local species, and collecting and organizing data in spreadsheets and databases. Requires the ability to identify plants and common wildlife of California as well as the skill of interpreting scientific reports and writing summaries. 

 

Basic Requirements: Current enrollment in a post-secondary education (e.g., associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree) program in a relevant field or a recent graduate. Internships are open to applications from current students or recent graduates (within the last 12 months). Successful candidates will have a background in biology, botany, ecology, geology, environmental studies or another related field; and some experience with field survey techniques. Experience with ArcGIS software and mapping natural resources with GPS equipment are a plus. Possession of a valid California driver’s license is required. Working Conditions/Schedule: This position will be divided between remote office work, on-site office work and field visits to survey, map, and collect field data. This position will operate in the Natural Resources Department at Midpen offices in Los Altos, California. Fieldwork is conducted in rural or mountainous Midpen open space areas, which may involve working alone in wildland areas and traversing rough, difficult terrain sometimes with poison oak, ticks and dense vegetation. Work may take place during inclement weather conditions. The selected individual will be required to work a minimum of three days on-site per week, and work may vary between field and office work. This is a temporary position working 20 – 40 hours per week, which will extend up to a total of 950 hours over a 6-9 month period (school schedules can be accommodated within regular business days/hours). The Legal Division provides a wide array of legal services to support the entire Air District, including handling enforcement cases; advising on the California Environmental Quality Act, AB617 Community Emission Reduction Plans, contracts, grants, and finance matters; developing regulatory language; supporting the permitting program; reviewing records under the Public Records Act; and staying abreast of current legal developments in air quality throughout California and nationwide. The Division utilizes a variety of tools to resolve enforcement actions, such as abatement orders, civil enforcement, and coordinating with other enforcement agencies, like local district attorneys or the state Attorney General. For cases in environmental justice communities, Air District staff can directly engage with community members when determining the appropriate legal remedies, including high enough penalties to reach deterrence-based outcomes and ensure the community benefits from the related funds.

THE POSITION 

The City of South San Francisco seeks customer service-oriented individuals to join the Community Resource Team at the new Library | Parks and Recreation Center. This position is shared between the Library Department and Parks and Recreation Department and works under the direction of the Community Resource Analyst. The Community Resource Clerk will typically be stationed at the lobby desks on the first and second floors of the new Library | Parks and Recreation Center at 901 Civic Campus Way in South San Francisco, however, may temporarily be assigned to other sites, or to represent the departments at special events. This position will provide a welcoming presence by greeting members of the public and responding to visitor inquiries to assist with wayfinding in the facility and sharing information about activities in the building as well as city and other local community resources.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal Community Resource Clerk possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills and will be comfortable working in a diverse community setting, providing customer service to community members of various ages, ethnicities, and abilities.  Candidates with bilingual skills are strongly encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate can work independently as well as with a team, and can make quick, quality, and educated decisions, taking a proactive approach to deal with customer service issues. Skill in using a personal computer and associated applications is required. The ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, is highly desirable. 
 

TYPICAL DUTIES:

• Assists in implementing the day-to-day operations at the Library | Parks and Recreation Center.
• Helps oversee use of the facility, ensuring appropriate security is maintained, policies and procedures are followed; appropriate equipment and materials are available, and building is operating efficiently.
• Registers participants in programs and assists patrons with Library or Parks and Recreation account inquiries.
• Performs typical service desk duties including but not limited to patron registration and account management, checking in/out materials, utilization of self-check equipment, assisting patrons with fines and fees, payments and placing reserves, and answering patron questions and requests.
• Maintain the posting of current promotional materials, such as flyers, brochures, guides, and other printed materials.
• Assists in coordinating the scheduling of classes, activities, meetings, events, and rentals in the facility.
• Assists patrons in using and locating library materials and equipment; explains library services, rules, and procedures.
• Works cooperatively with staff, parents, children, and other public and private sector employees and volunteers; coordinates with appropriate agencies to ensure that necessary services are provided to clients.
• Provides customer service in person, by telephone, and electronically.
• Performs general housekeeping duties related to the organization of materials and equipment in the common areas of the facility.
• Prepares for programs, including set up and take down; organization of required supplies.
• May be responsible for opening and/or closing the facility according to established procedures.
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Experience: Minimum of 18 years of age. One year of paid or unpaid work experience involving customer service.

Training:  Equivalent to graduation from high school.

Licenses/Certificates: All licenses and certificates must be maintained as a condition of employment.

•  Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a current First-Aid and CPR certificate within the first 12 months from date of hire.
