Distinguishing Characteristics: The Library Assistant I is the entry level classification in which incumbents perform the more routine library service functions, including shelving, routing of materials, weeding and shelf-reading books, and other assigned projects. Initially under closer supervision, incumbents learn to perform functions within established guidelines. Scheduling is flexible.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Performs a variety of circulation duties in the adult and children’s area of the library; checks in and checks out materials; prepares materials for return to the circulating collection; conducts router; assists patrons and explains the use of computers as well as other related equipment available for general public use. 
• Demonstrates a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties.
• Opens and closes branch library facilities if scheduled at that time.
• Inspects returned materials, including books, publications and video tapes for damage; performs mending, cleaning and repair of materials as necessary; removes and returns expired holds.
• Assists in weeding and shelf-reading; removes designated materials from the collection; reorganizes shelved materials through visual inspection.
• Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff and the public.

The Supervising Librarian position is in the Library & Arts Division of Library and Recreation.  This new department encourages the growth and development of a strong community by creating experiences that spark curiosity and enable lifelong learning.  We are dedicated to providing quality service through continual improvements to our programs and services for persons of all ages and abilities.  Under direction, the Supervising Librarian will plan and organize a specific section of the Library & Arts Division and is responsible for the full supervision of Library Assistants and other Librarians.

This multi-position class is a working supervisor level in charge of personnel and activities associated with a specific division or function.  These positions participate in the work of the unit as needed.  The positions are guided by established policies and procedures, principles of the field, and management personnel.  This class is distinguished from the Librarian II in that the latter is a professional specialist, whereas this class is a working professional supervisor with associated authorities and responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include the following. Other duties may be assigned):

• Plans and schedules employee shifts, work days, rotation of tasks, and daily or special work assignments.
• Plans, develops, and implements procedures and processes.
• Plans and reviews the work of Library staff and volunteers.
• Interviews applicants for employment and recommends selection.

Job Summary:         Under the direction of the Office of the Superintendent, perform a variety of specialized duties to support San Mateo County Office of Education’s strategic vision concerning sustainability.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the full journey level class in the Laboratory Technician series and is distinguished from the I level by the ability to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instruction or assistance as unusual or unique situations arise.  Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

• Receives general supervision from the Water Quality Laboratory Supervisor.
• May provide technical supervision over less experienced laboratory staff as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Perform a variety of physical, chemical, biological, and bacteriological analyses of wastewater treatment plant samples as well as samples of sludge, drinking water, industrial waste, and other water/wastewater products.
• Set up, calibrate, and operate a variety of laboratory equipment and instruments; perform minor maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments.
• Recognize problems that may occur in an analytical procedure and troubleshoot known procedures or confer with others to identify possible problems affecting results; recommend changes to procedures, as appropriate.
• Collect various samples for analysis from specific locations according to a predetermined schedule; may collect special samples as conditions warrant; prepare and preserve samples for transport, storage, and laboratory testing.
• Prepare standard chemical solutions, reagents and bacteriological media; keep laboratory facilities clean and in an orderly condition; order supplies and make recommendations regarding equipment purchases.
• Enter laboratory data into a computer system for further analysis and reporting purposes; maintain laboratory records and prepare required reports.
• Wash, clean, and sterilize glassware and other equipment; sterilize bacteriological supplies.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Principles and practices of chemistry, bacteriology and the chemical sciences, including methods and techniques of laboratory testing and analysis.
• Modern laboratory procedures and equipment, including computer uses and applications as applied to laboratory operation and analysis.
• Arithmetic, including proportions, percentages, and decimals.
• Pertinent local, State and Federal laws, ordinances/rules, and department procedures.

Ability to:

• Perform a variety of chemical, biochemical, and bacteriological tests.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Experience:

Two years of increasingly responsible experience performing laboratory analysis duties similar to that of a Laboratory Technician I with the City of Roseville.

Training:

An Associate’s degree or 60 semester units of college level course work including 18 units in a major field of study and 21 units in general education  from an accredited college or university, preferably with major course work in chemistry, bacteriology, biology, or a related field. Two years of related work experience can substitute for an Associate’s Degree.

License or Certificate:

• Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain within 18 months, a California Water Environment Association Grade 1 Laboratory Analyst certificate.

SELECTION PROCESS

All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will have their experience scored in the Formula Rate Examination. The applicant’s experience will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula. THE POSITION

The Human Resources Department is accepting applications for the Regular and Full-time position of Laboratory Technician I in the Environmental Utilities Department.  The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 –5 pm; a flex schedule may be available.

DEFINITION
To perform physical, chemical, biological, and bacteriological analyses of wastewater, sludge, drinking water, industrial waste and related samples; perform related work as assigned.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level class in the Laboratory Technician series.  Positions in this class typically have little or no directly related work experience and work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.  The Laboratory Technician I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level.  Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned.
 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives immediate supervision from the Water Quality Laboratory Supervisor.
 
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Perform a variety of physical, chemical, biological, and bacteriological analyses of wastewater treatment plant samples as well as samples of sludge, drinking water, industrial waste, and other water/wastewater products.
• Set up, calibrate, and operate a variety of laboratory equipment and instruments; perform minor maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments.
• Recognize problems that may occur in an analytical procedure and troubleshoot known procedures or confer with others to identify possible problems affecting results; recommend changes to procedures, as appropriate.
• Collect various samples for analysis from specific locations according to a predetermined schedule; may collect special samples as conditions warrant; prepare and preserve samples for transport, storage, and laboratory testing.
• Prepare standard chemical solutions, reagents and bacteriological media; keep laboratory facilities clean and in an orderly condition; order supplies and make recommendations regarding equipment purchases.
• Enter laboratory data into a computer system for further analysis and reporting purposes; maintain laboratory records and prepare required reports.
• Wash, clean, and sterilize glassware and other equipment; sterilize bacteriological supplies.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Principles and practices of chemistry, bacteriology and the chemical sciences, including methods and techniques of laboratory testing and analysis.
• Modern laboratory procedures and equipment, including computer uses and applications as applied to laboratory operation and analysis.
• Arithmetic, including proportions, percentages, and decimals.

Ability to:

• Perform a variety of chemical, biochemical, and bacteriological tests.
• On a continuous basis, know and understand operations, and observe safety rules; analyze problem equipment and/or procedures; know and apply techniques and terminology; communicate and explain test results to others.
• Intermittently, sit while studying or preparing reports or stand at laboratory bench while performing laboratory tests; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when performing various field site sampling duties; stand while performing laboratory tests; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; use telephone, computer or communicate through written means; and lift or carry weight of 15 pounds or less.
• Operate laboratory equipment and computer programs related to laboratory data analysis.
• Learn to evaluate outcomes of laboratory results in order to detect errors.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Training:

An Associate’s degree or 60 semester units of college level course work including 18 units in a major field of study and 21 units in general education from an accredited college or university, preferably with major course work in chemistry, bacteriology, biology, or a related field. Two years of related work experience can substitute for an Associate’s Degree.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment.

Menlo Park Library seeks qualified candidates for on-call librarian positions in both the Adult and Youth Services divisions.

These extra-help, non-benefitted positions work on-call providing excellent customer service while performing a variety of professional library duties. Those duties could include reference, reader’s advisory, collection development and other tasks at a public information desk; leading events, programs or book clubs; digital literacy training for the public; and performing related work as assigned at the Menlo Park Main or Belle Haven branch library. A can-do attitude, a positive outlook, efficiency, approachability, and responsiveness to internal and external needs are all essential traits. Having a passion for libraries and a library's role in bridging technology gaps is required. Knowledge about technology, teaching and learning, and diversity is a must. Schedules vary based on the needs of the library system. Both Menlo Park Library locations are open on Saturdays and Sundays. On-call librarian positions are scheduled for less than 20 hours per week and may not exceed 980 hours within a twelve (12) month period.

Description

We have ONE immediate Distribution System Operator internship available with the District in the area of Water Distribution. Assignments are for a 40 hour week. Optional work schedules or reduced hours (i.e. part-time) may be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Duration of assignment is for up to six (6) months. Position will operate out of MMWD’s Corte Madera location (Water Distribution).

The Position

Distribution System Operator Intern: (1 position) Under the direct supervision of a certified water distribution operator, learn how to operate and maintain mechanical, electrical and control equipment. Perform inspections of mechanical and electrical equipment.  Assist operators in handling consumer calls.  Assist field personnel with confined space entries.  Learn the basics of a potable water distribution system.  Safety Boots required. Work hours are M-F 6:30 am to 3:00 pm.  This position is for up to a six (6) month duration at the Corte Madera location. 

Desired Background: Must be 18 years old or older.

Candidate must have current or recent enrollment in one of the following college level courses of study:
