THE POSITION: The City Manager’s Office at the City of San Mateo has an opportunity for an intern to work on a number of projects. The Department, which has program managers that work on Sustainability, Volunteering, Economic Development, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Communications, work on special projects directed by the City Manager and Assistant City Manager. The Student Intern will receive primary supervision from the Department Head, and project specific direction from the supervisor/manager primarily responsible for each specific project. The duration and start date of the internship are flexible though summer interns typically start between mid-May and Mid-June.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• AA/AS degree or BA/BS Candidate, preference to those pursuing coursework that supports local government work
• Strong analytical, writing and verbal skills; effective written and oral communication
• Experience conducting research and data analyses
• Able to work independently with direction from supervisor
• Interest in learning more about a career in local government
DUTIES: The primary projects will most likely include the following:
• Volunteer Survey. Conduct a citywide volunteer survey to collect feedback on the volunteer program. Prepare a report analyzing the results of the survey work.
• Program Improvement. Research and prepare findings reports on the effectiveness of our volunteer and ESL City Government Academy programs. Identify best practices and ways to improve both programs to attract and retain more volunteers and participants.
• Age-Friendly Business Certification. Assist in administering a pilot program to promote and inform businesses about the City’s Age-Friendly Business program and certify businesses as “age-friendly”.
• Event Support Assistance. Provide on-site support to help special community events with registration, attendee questions, event setup and other work as needed.
• Emergency Preparedness Planning. Assist in the Citywide effort to plan and prepare for natural disasters, public health emergencies, and other emergencies impacting the community or region.
In addition, the intern may work on a variety of other projects depending upon their time and interests.
