DEFINITION

• OPERATOR I (COLLECTION)
  Under general supervision or direction, the Operator I (Collection) is responsible for the overall operation of the wastewater collections system, which includes the repair and maintenance of the sewer collection system and pump stations.
   
• OPERATOR II (COLLECTION)
  Under general direction, supervises the operation of the Collections System of the Wastewater Treatment Plant on a designated shift to ensure processing and discharge of wastewater which complies with performance standards of State regulatory agencies; perform any combination of tasks involved with inspection, construction, repair, and preventive, corrective and emergency maintenance of sanitary personnel; prepares logs and other records; performs maintenance tasks as required and other related duties as required.
   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION REQUIREMENTS

For the Collections System, ability to locate, detect cause, and correct sewer stoppages; detect and perform minor repairs and adjustments to sewer equipment; maintain pumps and related mechanical equipment; and report to work at any time during an emergency.  Perform electrical and mechanical repairs, maintenance work and modification to equipment used in a water quality control plant; use various mechanic’s tools with skill and accuracy; available for standby on sewer calls on a rotation basis; follow oral and written directions; maintain working relationships with other employees.  (See Physical Demands section as it relates to Essential Function Requirements.)

  • Operate power rodder, jet truck, backhoe and TV equipment
  • Conduct periodic inspections and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to wastewater pumping stations and equipment
  • Keep daily logs and records on equipment; makes reports to the supervisor
  • Provide technical assistance and prescribe work methods and safety procedures to maintenance workers and utility workers
  • Inspect installation of new sewer lines, laterals and related structures; may study blueprints and specifications preparatory to inspection of construction project
  • Supervises the work of all operating personnel assigned to shift; trains and evaluates performance of shift employees, enforces safety procedures in conformance with policy of plant’s safety program.

Program Overview:

As an intern at the City of Simi Valley, you will be provided with on-the-job training and experience working in local government while you continue to work on obtaining your educational degree. In addition, you will build employment skills, and establish a professional network.

• Start Date: Monday, August 12, 2024
• Temporary, part-time position 
• In-person in Simi Valley (we do not offer remote internships)
• $16 per hour for a maximum of 20 hours per week
• Up to a maximum of one calendar year (depending on department need and budget)

Qualifications:
Current enrollment in an accredited college, university, or community college and enrolled in at least three (3) units of academic coursework. If hired, you still need to continue to be enrolled and attend school to remain in the position.

Typical Student Intern Duties:

• Prepare, from rough draft, or verbal instructions, such materials as reports, letters, receipts, lists, orders, schedules, notices, statistical data, social media, and copies of documents.    
• Provide customer service to the public or act as a receptionist, answer routine questions of the public, in person or by telephone.    
• Perform all types of filing (alphabetical, numerical, etc.)
• Post data, keep records, and prepare reports using predetermined forms and procedures.    
• Perform work related to bills, orders, notes, receipts, permits, licenses, etc.    
• Operate various office machines or equipment requiring little specialized training.    
• Collect and deliver correspondence, records, packages, etc. 
• Open, sort, and route incoming mail; stuff, seal, stamp, meter, and register outgoing mail.    
• Search records and files for data.    
• Compare and proofread documents; take notes.   
• Sort and arrange documents, correspondence, or other material.
