The Department is recruiting for part-time, unbenefited Lifeguard and Instructor Lifeguard positions in the Recreation and Neighborhood Services Division (RNS) for the summer seasonal Citywide Aquatics programming.

These positions may be required to work variable shifts between the hours of 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM, Monday – Saturday during the dates of June 15, 2020 – August 22, 2020. Additionally, a MANDATORY training for both Lifeguard and Instructor Lifeguard positions will take place starting the week of June 8, 2020 – June 12, 2020 from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. These positions are part-time, unbenefited with a limit of less than 20 hours per week or less than 1,040 hours per year. There is no guarantee of hours or longevity.

Note: Candidates are not required to possess the Lifeguard Training certificate at the time of completing the application or to interview for the position. If selected for the position of Lifeguard, the Citywide Aquatics program will be offering Lifeguard Training certification classes, if needed. If selected for the position of Instructor Lifeguard, the Citywide Aquatics program will be offering Lifeguard Training and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's (WSI) certification classes, if needed.

 
Lifeguard:

Lifeguards supervise the conduct of swimmers to maintain safety in the swimming pool. Lifeguards also enforce swimming pool rules and may participate in swim instruction programs; observe swimmers in swimming pools; provide warnings to those who violate the safety rules of the pool and expelling them, if necessary, because of willful disobedience of the rules; rescues swimmers who are in distress; and administers artificial respiration when necessary according to the prescribed method. Lifeguards may also train and direct the work of lower level workers as assigned and participate in pool maintenance. Possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training’s Authorization Certificate is REQUIRED for the position of Lifeguard.

 
Instructor Lifeguard:

In addition to the duties identified for Lifeguards, Instructor Lifeguards also organize and conduct swimming instruction classes for beginners, intermediate, or advanced swimmers at a swimming pool. Duties will include teaching swimming to children, adult individuals, and groups. Instructor Lifeguards may officiate at competitive swim meets. Instructor Lifeguards must also be able to instruct in the techniques of swimming and lifesaving. Possession of a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor’s Authorization Certificate (WSI) is REQUIRED for the position of Instructor Lifeguard. 

Lifeguard and Instructor Lifeguards may be placed at any of the City pools. Currently, the City of San José owns six pools at the following locations:

Cascade Opportunity

Assistant Swimming Pool Manager:
 

The Assistant Swimming Pool Manager participates with the Swimming Pool Manager in the management and supervision at a City operated swimming pool facility and performs related work as required. This position may be required to supervise other pool personnel in the absence of the Swimming Pool Manager and may perform lifeguard activities and instruct in all categories of swimming classes.

Responsibilities for this position include, but may not be limited to:

• Assisting the Swimming Pool Manager in the planning, organizing and direction of recreational swimming and swim instruction programs.
• Participating in the supervision of lifeguards and other pool personnel.
• Participating in the in-service training program for all personnel covering policies and procedures of the City and safety responsibilities of the pool operation.
• Performing the duties of a lifeguard whenever necessary.
• Participating in the management of a swimming pool facility, including the establishment of necessary procedures for the collection of fees, preparing attendance reports, accident reports, and other routine financial reports on a regular basis.
• Preparing work schedules and assignments as delegated by the Swimming Pool Manager.

Swimming Pool Manager:

The Swimming Pool Manager position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and supervising swimming and swim instruction programs at a City operated swimming pool facility.

Responsibilities for this position include, but may not be limited to:

• Enforcing policies and procedures, which ensure efficient and effective operation of pool facilities, including personnel management and training.
• Collecting attendance fees and completing attendance, accident, and accounting reports.
• Supervising health and safety factors of the pool, including first aid.
• Programming and scheduling events at the pool.
• Scheduling and supervising the work of lifeguards and other pool personnel.
• Maintaining personnel records and preparing necessary reports of time worked, assignments, and personnel requirements.
• Assisting with janitorial duties, limited pool maintenance, including daily chemical analysis/testing, pool cleaning, cleaning of bathrooms as needed.
• Supervising in-service training for all personnel, including pre-season meetings of all personnel covering policies and procedures of the City, and safety responsibilities. 
• Attend meetings and trainings as required.

The San José Public Library System has numerous libraries throughout the City. We hire Library Pages for each of these locations, and for our Library Page Substitute Pool.  Library Pages selected for specific locations are normally scheduled to work approximately an average of 16 hours per week, on a year round regular basis. Library Pages selected for our Substitute Pool are scheduled to work at various locations as needed. The days and hours assigned will vary depending on which location you are assigned to and the scheduling needs of that branch/unit.  Most Library Pages will be required to work some evenings and weekends. 

Library Pages are responsible for providing direct customer service, filing materials on the shelves quickly and accurately so that customers can locate the items easily, providing assistance at the customer service desk, assisting in maintaining an orderly and welcoming environment by monitoring the facility, answering questions from customers in person or over the phone, explaining library policies and procedures, conducting basic searches on library catalogues, checking materials in/out, helping customers register for a borrower's card, collecting fines, interacting with and working well with other team members. 

These positions require pushing or pulling carts loaded with materials; packing, unpacking and transporting shipment boxes; reaching, bending, and stooping to put materials on low and high shelves; actively moving for several hours at a time, retrieving items from deep bins, and standing for periods of time.

Pre-School Teacher's Aide

Salary Range: $15.00 to $17.00 per hour DOQ

The Position:  Teacher Aides assist with the Tiny Tots (3-4 yrs). Campbell Recreation Pre-School builds fundamental cognitive, emotional, social, and physical skills for children ages 3 to 4. Classes are held late August through the end of May at the Campbell Community Center. 

Responsibilities:

• Assist teacher in providing a safe, positive, and fun class conducive to learning
• Assist with set-up and clean-up of classroom and preparation of art projects
• Greet children at the door upon their arrival and check children out as they leave
• Supervise children in the playground area to ensure safe, injury-free play
• Set up and/or put away playground activities
• Perform other duties as assigned, which will vary by classroom and teacher

Ability to:  Offer a pre-school class suited to the needs of a diverse community; follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; perform manual work; maintain assigned areas and equipment; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.   Move objects between 20 and 50 pounds for short distances. Possess the ability to perform the essential functions of the position which requires standing, bending, sitting (including sitting on the floor and/or in small chairs at children’s level).

Knowledge of: Common recreational and social needs of preschoolers; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; analyze, interpret and explain program policies and procedures.

Education and Experience: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Prior experience leading pre-school or school aged children in a classroom setting is desired, but not required.

Qualifications:            

• Training and/or experience working with children in a structured classroom setting
• Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, and teachers
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the position which requires standing, bending, sitting (including sitting on the floor and/or in small chairs at children’s level)
• Ability to keep basic records and perform basic arithmetic calculations.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under supervision of Preschool Teacher II, III and Coordinator, assures policies and procedures are maintained, plans and conducts diversified recreation programs, plans and organizes daily activities, supervises participants, instructs curriculum for classroom activities, maintains communication with parents of participants, promotes and ensures safety procedures, renders first aid in the event of injury, performs related work as required. Typical activities include but are not limited to: facility attending, organizing, cleaning and setting-up the classroom and materials, assisting and leading craft, art, lessons and project preparations, leading circle time, story time, cooking projects, games and monitoring and implementing playground activities.

Tiny Tots is a recreation, play with a purpose, non-credentialed city run preschool program. Staff are scheduled from mid-August through the end of May. The shifts for this position are 11-2:30 pm Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and 12:00 – 4:00 pm on Tuesday and Thursday. If you are only available for either the MWF or Tu/Th shift, please still submit an application. This position will work on an as-needed basis and is limited to 960 hours a year.

The emphasis of the Tiny Tots program is to provide physical, social, and emotional growth for children in a child-centered environment. Activities are designed to foster a healthy child that has a positive self-image and enjoys learning. Tiny Tots programs provide material that will produce an atmosphere conducive to each child’s own individual creativity and self-expression. Children participate in arts/crafts, music, body movement, basic science, cognitive games, creative play, cooking, circle, and story time and phonics awareness.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: 

• Possession of a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent is required
• 1 year paid or volunteer work experience in a preschool, recreation environment is preferred
• CPR & First Aid training required within three months of hire

COMPENSATION:
This is a part-time, seasonal position. $15.00 to $24.50 hourly DOE.

OTHER INFORMATION:
Temporary employees are non-benefited, at-will positions. Since the City does not participate in Social Security and is required to provide an alternative retirement plan, you are required to participate in the City's defined contribution retirement plan through Nationwide where 3.75% of your gross compensation per pay period is deducted and put into the plan. The City matches this 3.75% for a total contribution of 7.5% of your gross compensation per pay period.
