THE POSITION

The Human Resources Department is accepting applications for the temporary and part-time position of Library Page in the Parks, Recreation, and Libraries Department. The work schedule will be during normal Library hours including evenings and weekends. This position is limited to 25 hours per week for a maximum of 1,000 hours per fiscal year.

DEFINITION

To perform a variety of duties related to performing routine, repetitive and manual work in connection with the use and maintenance of library resources.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Assist customers in the use of self-check machines, copiers, microfilm/fiche readers, computer printing with the print management systems and the computer reservations software.
• Register customers and collects payments for Parks, Recreation and Libraries classes and events.
• Shelve, sort, shift, and file library materials following established procedures.
• Check in returned materials, observing their condition and bringing damaged materials to the attention of higher level library personnel for disposition.
• Check out materials to customers.
• Organize returned materials and delivers them to proper sorting shelves.

• Assist with free and fee based library programs; assist with room set up; check in program participants; distribute program materials.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Basic knowledge of computers, alphabetizing, indexing, and/or filing methods.
• English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
• Practices and methods of public relations and customer service; techniques and principles of effective interpersonal communication.

Experience and Training

Experience:

• No experience required.  Six months of general customer service experience or the equivalent in library employment is desirable.

Training:

• Equivalent to the completion of the eleventh (11th) grade or sixteen (16) years of age.

License or Certificate

• Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment.

The Opportunity:

We want a self-motivated and responsible individual to join the City of Milpitas as a part-time, temporary Water Meter Reader in the Finance Department. You'll read residential and commercial water meters and record consumption, identify water meter equipment problems, and work with other staff in resolving billing and other related issues. 

Examples of Duties:

Read residential and commercial water meters.

Follow assigned routes, documenting water readings.

Check meters in customers’ backyards, basements, and meter pits.

Report unusual consumption readings.

Test meters for accuracy using appropriate equipment including a heavy measuring tank, its gauge and a meter gauge;  look for indication of leaks, calculating size of leak as appropriate.

Report malfunctioning meters or signs of tampering.

Prepare work orders for malfunctioning or damaged meters.

Maintain meter boxes including cutting bushes, digging out boxes, cleaning boxes and replacing missing or broken lids.

Notify public of delinquent accounts and bad checks by tagging doors including notification of potential shut-offs.

Lock off water for non-payment using various tools and devices.

Turn on systems for new users or for resumption of services.

Advise customers regarding meter and billing problems, and refer them to the proper City department.

Recheck and confirm or correct previous readings as directed.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

License or Certificate

Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain an appropriate, valid California Driver’s License.

Special Requirements  Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:

Menlo Park Library seeks qualified candidates for on-call librarian positions in both the Adult and Youth Services divisions.

These extra-help, non-benefitted positions work on-call providing excellent customer service while performing a variety of professional library duties. Those duties could include reference, reader’s advisory, collection development and other tasks at a public information desk; leading events, programs or book clubs; digital literacy training for the public; and performing related work as assigned at the Menlo Park Main or Belle Haven branch library. A can-do attitude, a positive outlook, efficiency, approachability, and responsiveness to internal and external needs are all essential traits. Having a passion for libraries and a library's role in bridging technology gaps is required. Knowledge about technology, teaching and learning, and diversity is a must. Schedules vary based on the needs of the library system. Both Menlo Park Library locations are open on Saturdays and Sundays. Under direct supervision, a Library Page is to sort, shelve, straighten, and relocate library materials on the shelves; pull library materials off shelves, and prepare the library for opening/closing procedures.  The ability to quickly and accurately sort items alphabetically and numerically.  This is an ideal job for someone who has good organizational skills, and able to work with others. A library page also provides basic directional information to library users.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

Standing in and walking between work areas is frequently required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and reach to perform assigned duties, as well as push and pull carts. Employees must possess the ability to lift and carry materials and objects up to 25 pounds and push and pull materials and objects up to 75 pounds with the use of proper equipment.

Summary of Duties: Under general supervision performs routine duties to assist in community outreach programs and educational activities for youth and young adults.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This position is an entry-level position aimed at engaging local middle, high school, and community college students to participate in their community through a variety of programs.

The Library Clerk position available is an hourly, non-benefited, temporary assignment which operates out of the Community Learning Center, a branch of the Library Department. The Community Learning Center (CLC) works with collaborative agencies to serve youth and families. In collaboration with other staff at the Community Learning Center, the Library Clerk, or Homework Club Lead Assistant, will help with the children’s activities and projects, in the belief that each child, youth and adult brings strength, talents, and skills to the learning process.  The Homework Club operates five days a week from 2:00 – 6:00 pm and serves Title I schools in South San Francisco.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Leads activities that focus on reading, writing and math skill development with the use of computers, educational games and creative group projects.
• Fosters confidence, self-esteem and the love of learning in children.
• Assists in the computer lab with Internet use, word processing, and computer software.
• Supervises volunteers.
• Leads craft activities and games.
• Facilitates learning and works together with other assistants as part of a team.

The City of South San Francisco is a fully independent and highly commercialized full-service city with an estimated population of 65,710 growing to 100,000 during business hours. City departments include: Police; Fire; Parks & Recreation; Public Works; Economic and Community Development; Information Technology; City Attorney; Library; Finance; Human Resources; and Office of the City Manager. The City has a Council-City Manager form of government with more than 400 full– and part-time employees. 

The Library Page position available is an hourly, non-benefited, temporary assignment which operates out of the Community Learning Center, a branch of the Library Department. The Community Learning Center (CLC) works with collaborative agencies to serve youth and families. In collaboration with other staff at the Community Learning Center, the Library Page, or Homework Club Assistant, will help with the children’s activities and projects, in the belief that each child, youth and adult brings strength, talents, and skills to the learning process.  The Homework Club operates five days a week from 2:00 – 6:00 pm and serves Title I schools in South San Francisco.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assist 3rd to 5th graders in the completion of homework;
• Work as part of collaborative team to support goals of the HWC and the Community Learning Center;
• Assist with classroom management;
• Develop and implement fun, interactive games and educational activities;
• Co-lead classroom activities in the areas of math, reading, writing, and art;
• Support educational activities during Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math programming; and
• Use open communication and active listening with children and adults.

The ideal candidate is punctual; possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills; can work independently or as part of a team; is successful at understanding and carrying out verbal and written directions; and is skilled in interacting effectively with the public.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

• At least one year experience working with children
• Must be 16 years or older (A work permit is required through age 17. Applications can be obtained from public high school Counseling Offices).
• Applicants being considered for employment must be able to furnish proof of legal right to work in the U.S.

Part Time Hours: Morning/Afternoon Shifts.

This hourly position is not in Civil Service and does not receive benefits.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, to read, record, and report readings of meters; to make customer service changes; and to do related work as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

On an assigned route and schedule, reads utility meters and records the reading on prepared forms; removes all debris impeding meter readings such as water, dirt, etc.; removes meter register cover, when necessary, to clean and/or replace glass so that an accurate reading may be obtained; makes customer service changes, including routine service turn-on and turn-off, and delinquent account service turn-off; answers customer questions regarding meter readings. Assists in clerical operations in billing and collecting for services; notes and reports utility conditions requiring attention.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:  General office practices and procedures.

Ability to:  Learn the methods of meter reading, office procedures relating to billing for water service, and the technical operations as related to meter reading; work responsibly and without immediate supervision in assigned duties; keep simple records and make arithmetical calculations with speed and accuracy; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Education:  Graduation from high school or equivalent.

License:  Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License.

Physical Requirements:  An incumbent in this position is required to walk extensively, usually 3-5 miles daily; work almost exclusively outdoors under a variety of weather conditions (including rain, cold, fog, and sunshine); remove and replace meter covers weighing 5 to 50 lbs.; read on an average 300 meters daily; at each meter location may be required to bend, squat, or kneel to reach below ground level to read, clean, or remove assorted debris, dirt, or water as necessary.
