Distinguishing Characteristics: The Library Assistant I is the entry level classification in which incumbents perform the more routine library service functions, including shelving, routing of materials, weeding and shelf-reading books, and other assigned projects. Initially under closer supervision, incumbents learn to perform functions within established guidelines. Scheduling is flexible.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Performs a variety of circulation duties in the adult and children’s area of the library; checks in and checks out materials; prepares materials for return to the circulating collection; conducts router; assists patrons and explains the use of computers as well as other related equipment available for general public use. 
• Demonstrates a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties.
• Opens and closes branch library facilities if scheduled at that time.
• Inspects returned materials, including books, publications and video tapes for damage; performs mending, cleaning and repair of materials as necessary; removes and returns expired holds.
• Assists in weeding and shelf-reading; removes designated materials from the collection; reorganizes shelved materials through visual inspection.
• Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff and the public.

Bilingual ability (Spanish/English) is highly preferred for these positions.  Hours are:

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following:  Assist students, primarily 3rd through 8th grades, with homework assignments; monitor behavior of students; ensure that the Homework Center environment is conducive to school work; welcome volunteers and help them connect with students; answer homework related questions from parents; set up materials and keep Homework Center area neat; track monthly statistics; provide occasional activities for after completion of homework such as crafts or story read-aloud; and perform related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skill and abilities are qualifying.  A Typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill and abilities would be:

 

Education & Experience

Education equivalent to the completion of 12th grade is required.  Prior experience working with children is highly preferred.  Knowledge of mathematics through algebra I and a high level of grammar, spelling and writing are required.  Bilingual ability (Spanish/English) is highly preferred.

Knowledge of:

• Mathematics algebra I.
• English usage, grammar and spelling.
• Various age appropriate activities and crafts.

Ability to:

• Assist 1st-8th grade students with homework and provide academic support in an engaging, proactive and positive manner.
• Monitor behavior of students and keep an atmosphere that is conducive to school work.
• Communicate clearly and concisely with students, parents, volunteers, supervisor and library staff.
• Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
• Work with little direct supervision.
• Work independently and as a team member.
• Organize and facilitate age appropriate activities for 1st-5th graders.
• Bilingual ability (Spanish/English) is highly desirable.

Must be physically capable of performing the essential job functions of this classification.

Position:          Recreation Specialist II / Library

Salary:             $15.48 per hour.

Job Type:         Part time – no benefits

Hours:              Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:15 a.m. – 11:15 a.m., some evenings & weekends.    

 

Daily responsibilities may include:

• Engage with children in play activities such as games, puzzles, reading books, coloring (all toys and equipment provided by program). 
• Notify parents when children need to use the bathroom or diapers need to be changed; or take children to the bathroom during library programs.   
• Help set up room.
• Help maintain the cleanliness of toys and rooms.
• Put away toys and supplies at end of session.   
• Help clean up after Library programs.

 

Desired Qualifications: 

• Prior experience caring for young children. 
• Good communication skills with a wide variety of people.
• Ability to speak Spanish, bilingual – Spanish & English – preferred.

THE POSITION

The main job of a Library Page is putting books, DVDs, CDs, and magazines back on the shelves and preparing the library for opening and closing. The ability to quickly and accurately sort things alphabetically and numerically is required. This is an ideal job for someone who enjoys organizing and who can work quietly on their own.

 

DEFINITION

 

Under supervision, sorts, shelves, straightens, relocates, and searches for library materials, re-orders and organizes materials as needed, provides basic directional information to patrons, performs basic circulation duties using computer software, performs physical tasks to support library programs and procedures, performs closing procedures, and does related work as required.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

 

Sorts and shelves materials, assists at public service desks; inspects materials for wear and damage and does basic mending of same; keeps books and periodical shelves in order; assists in taking inventory of books; performs basic custodial tasks as needed.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

 Knowledge of: Basic clerical functions, principles of alphabetical and numerical filing, basic record keeping procedures.

 

Ability to: Sort material quickly and accurately in alphabetic or numeric order; follow oral and written directions; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to library patrons, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

 

Must be physically able to stand for extended periods, walk, bend, kneel, push wheeled carts, lift, reach overhead, go up and down stairs, and use a step stool.

 

Availability for evening and Saturday shifts is required.

 

Age: Minimum age of sixteen.

 

Education: Completion of the tenth grade in high school.
