The eligible list generated by this recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies throughout San Mateo County Libraries. The current vacancies are subject to change but are expected to be placed at branches supporting the Atherton, Pacifica, Portola Valley, and North Fair Oaks communities. We have both part-time and full-time positions available.

Because of the diversity of the communities we serve, bilingual language skills (Mandarin, Cantonese, or Spanish) are strongly preferred and are required for some, but not all, of the vacancies. 
 
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
We are looking for enthusiastic, customer service-oriented and flexible Library Assistants who are effective in communicating with people from a variety of backgrounds. Experience working in a library, social services, youth development, education, or early childhood setting is also highly preferred.

In addition, the ideal candidate will have the ability to:

• Seek out opportunities to inspire with friendly customer service and actively provide opportunities for discovery, enrichment, and uplifting the community.
• Communicate clearly and considerately with co-workers, volunteers, and patrons.
• Model exemplary customer care in all interactions--including in person, at a program, at outreach events, helping with library card or circulation issues, address suggestions for improvements, or otherwise ensure that our library users are uniformly welcomed.
• Work with a variety of technologies to provide services to library patrons and troubleshoot computer issues.
• Use independent judgment to interpret and apply library policies and procedures.
• Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers to reach goals.
• Plan and lead a variety of creative, exciting programs for the public in concert with Librarian and Community Program Specialist staff.
• Contribute innovative ideas for library programs and services in the branch and throughout SMCL.
• Thrive in a changing environment.
• Thrive in initiating interactions, starting conversations, and marketing the library to the community, one person at a time.
• Communicate inclusivity and cultural sensitivity and be approachable in verbal, written, and non-verbal communications.
• Work a required schedule that includes a combination of day, evening, and weekend shifts.

SALARIES:
Library Assistant I: $25.88 - $28.92 hourly  
Library Assistant II: $27.31 - $34.15 hourly

Experience and Education: Qualified candidates possess any combination of education and experience that would likely provide them with the required knowledge, skills, and ability.

• Library Assistant I: No specific education or experience is required.
• Library Assistant II: One year of public contact and support experience in a library.

Other Requirements:  

• Must be available to work a schedule that includes a combination of days, evenings, and weekends.

Open and Promotional. Anyone may apply. Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, SEIU or AFSCME represented extra-help/term position prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination. Responses to the supplemental questions must be submitted in addition to our regular employment application form.

The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight: pass/fail) and a panel interview or oral examination (weight: 100%). Based solely on the information provided in the application materials, an application screening committee will select those applicants whose education, training and experience most closely matches the needs of the department. Those selected will be invited to a panel interview. Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.

Why Join our Department?

The San Mateo Public Library is seeking two full-time Librarians. One position will work primarily at the Marina Branch Library and the other position will work primarily in the Children’s Division of the Main Library. Marina Library is a branch of the San Mateo Public Library. The building, located in the Parkside neighborhood, opened in 1966. The Main Library, is a dynamic community resource and destination located in downtown San Mateo.

The San Mateo Public Library provides library services to residents of the City of San Mateo and the Town of Hillsborough and is part of the Peninsula Library System (PLS), a consortium of public library jurisdictions and community college libraries in San Mateo County.  The San Mateo Public Library is also part of the Pacific Library Partnership, a consolidation of four library systems in the greater Bay Area of Northern California. The San Mateo Public Library consists of a Main Library and two neighborhood branch libraries.

Branch Library Position

The ideal candidate for the Marina Branch Library will be a creative, energetic, and highly motivated person with a passion for working with library visitors of all ages, while bringing fresh and original ideas for tailoring our services to meet the specific needs of the local community.  Our candidate will also collaborate on special events and other projects with a dynamic team of professional and para-professional staff. Under the supervision of the Supervising Librarian of the Branches, the successful candidate will work as a generalist, providing reference and reader's advisory services to both children and adults, presenting an engaging array of programs, and promoting library events and services in the local community.

Main Library Position – Children’s Services

The ideal candidate for the Children’s Division of the Main Library will be a high energy person with a passion for working with children, families, and their adult caregivers, and understand the public library’s unique role in supporting them. They feel comfortable in a dynamic, busy library space where they regularly practice their librarian skills by presenting storytimes, STEM/Makerspace programs, school age programs, family and parent workshops, reader’s advisory and so much more. This candidate will work with a team of professional and paraprofessional staff dedicated to serving the youngest members of our community and their families under the supervision of the Supervising Librarian of Children’s and Literacy Services. The successful candidate will provide excellent customer services to all members of the community providing both programming and reference services, communicating what the library has to offer, and engaging with the community inside and outside the library space.

What You’ll Do

• Advise and assist library patrons; demonstrate the use of on-line library catalogs, databases and other user aids; refer patrons to other appropriate agencies if appropriate.
• Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services in such areas as children, adult, and others using various themes and technologies; recommend program and procedure changes.
• Perform outreach to the community, community organizations, and schools within established design and framework.
• Serve on materials selection committee for the library; select and deselect materials for assigned area; evaluate and remove materials from the collection.
• Serve at a reference desk; research and respond to difficult or technical reference questions.
• Attend and represent the library at professional meetings as required.
• Supervise and train assigned staff.
• Compile library activity reports and statistics related to assignment.
• Participate in department meetings and continuing education programs as appropriate.
• Respond to citizen complaints and requests.
• Design and implement special ongoing programs, services and events.
• Assist in preparing and monitoring budget and grant programs.
• Develop, implement, and monitor training programs.
• Design and analyze statistical reports.
