SJPL is recruiting a Volunteer Coordinator to administer the library's volunteer programs, organize volunteer activities, and provide support and resources to staff who work directly with volunteers on-site and virtually. The role focuses on drawing upon volunteers' knowledge and motivations to strengthen library events and services. The position will coordinate volunteer assignments and use various tools to develop, evaluate, and promote Library volunteer opportunities.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Property and Evidence Technician is a journey level classification where incumbents are assigned the full range of duties and receive general supervision with instruction or assistance provided as new or unusual situations arise. Duties in this classification require incumbents to work shifts, weekends, and holidays.  This classification is distinguished from other classifications by the specialized nature of the functions performed.  It is further distinguished from the Property/Evidence and Crime Scene Administrator which is a section head management level classification responsible for the overall daily operations of the Property/Evidence and Crime Scene Investigation functions.

What you will do: 

Depending on assignment, duties may include but are not limited to the following:  

1. Receive, record, store all items of property or evidence.

2. Maintain chain of custody records for property items.

3. Maintain suspense file of stored property, send notices to owners of unclaimed property.

4. Correspond with property owners, or persons recovering property.

5. Coordinate the destruction of evidence with local agencies and purge items not to be returned to owners.

7. Answer questions either verbally or in writing from the public regarding the disposition of property.

8. Maintain records of controlled items (i.e. narcotics, firearms).

9. Ensure the security of property and stored items.

10. Access information using automated terminals to determine court dispositions or activity status.

11. Maintain records of court dispositions and charge sheets.

12. Testify in court concerning evidential property.

13. Deliver and pick up evidence to and from crime lab and coroner's office.

14. Train departmental personnel in procedures related to property and evidence handling.

15. Order and maintain necessary forms and supplies for the department.

16. Work nights, weekends holidays when required and serve in on-call status.

You have: 
 Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Two (2) years of storing and maintaining an inventory of materials in a highly controlled environment similar to the property and evidence materials maintained in a police department. Familiarity with a law enforcement or criminal justice environment is desirable.

Education: Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade. Supplemental related training and coursework such as Evidence and Property Function Management is highly desirable. 

Licenses and Certificates: Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class C driver's license. Possession of or ability to obtain an International Association for Property and Evidence (IAPE) training certification within the probationary period.

6. Background  

Candidates under final consideration for employment with the City should expect to undergo an employment background/reference check that may include, but is not limited to: review of Summary Criminal History obtained from the State Department of Justice through Live Scan Fingerprinting, employment history, medical examination, polygraph, confirmation of educational credentials, degrees, and licenses (including driver's license). Some positions, depending on the nature of the work, also require a credit check.

During the background process, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances. EXAM PROCESS

Applicants may waive the written exam only by submitting a California POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) T-score of 48 points or higher. We will accept California POST T-scores from other agencies provided the test was taken no more than one year prior to the date of application. Applicants must submit, on agency letterhead, a letter that states that the individual has taken the California PELLETB written exam. Fremont Police Department is the law enforcement agency for the City of Fremont, California. As of 2024, the department consists of over 300 staff, of which more than 200 are sworn personnel, and more than 100 are professional staff.  Fremont Police Department was first established under the direction of Chief Richard E.
