THE DEPARTMENT

The South San Francisco Public Library is a full-service library committed to delivering quality services to a diverse community.  Library services are available at three sites, including the Main Library (901 Civic Campus Way), the Grand Avenue Library (306 Walnut Avenue) and the Gene Mullin Community Learning Center (520 Tamarack Lane).  Lifelong literacy services are provided by Project Read at the Main Library and the Gene Mullin Community Learning Center (GMCLC).  The City currently has one opening in this classification, for a position providing programs and services at the Grand Avenue Library.

LIBRARIAN I/II (For internal/promotional only)

Serve the City of San Bruno by developing Library Resources and Programs in our community! 

The City of San Bruno offers a unique opportunity to serve as a Librarian I/II, with a particular focus on youth services. Librarians perform professional library work including programming, reference services, cataloging, interlibrary loans, and children’s or adult services, with an emphasis on fostering literacy and lifelong learning among young patrons. They work under the supervision of the Library Services Manager and the Community Services Superintendent and may provide indirect supervision to paraprofessional staff of the library, ensuring high-quality support for youth and other community members alike. 

Librarian I is entry level position, responsible for a limited scope of a library program area, which requires the application of fundamental library science principles and practices.  

Librarian II is a journey level position, distinguished from that of Librarian I, by the greater complexity of the assignments and by the greater independence with which the employee is expected to operate. 

Examples of the essential duties and responsibilities include:  

• Perform professional work in rendering reference services, reader's advisory, and library instruction to patrons, with a special emphasis on youth and children’s services. This includes classification and cataloging of materials, ordering of books, documents, periodicals, and other materials. 

• Secure books through interlibrary loan system; search appropriate databases and identify books and other materials; request materials from an appropriate source; process materials for distribution to the patron; respond to requests from other libraries for interlibrary loans. 

• Assist in the development and implementation of programs and services such as outreach to homebound patrons, public relations, coordination of volunteers, children's services outreach through the city’s programming network and other social media outlets. 

• Conduct children's story times, focusing on early literacy development and engagement. 

• Prepare publicity; coordinate the publication of brochures; coordinate the dissemination of Library program publicity, particularly for children’s and youth services. 

• Review book collection to determine additional materials needed; selects materials for repair or discard. 

• Attends and represents the library at professional meetings as required. 

• Perform other duties as assigned. 

In addition to graduation from a master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college of university, the ideal candidate will demonstrate the following competencies: 

• Strong, hands-on technical skills and knowledge in the principles and practices of library science and services. 

• Initiating actions to reduce barriers and leverage the advantages of diverse cultures, interpersonal styles, ideas, and professional and educational backgrounds. 

• Placing a high priority on the (internal or external) customer’s perspective when making decisions and taking action; implementing service practices that meet the customers’ and organization’s needs. 

• Identifying and understanding problems and opportunities by gathering, analyzing, and interpreting quantitative and qualitative information; choosing the best course of action by establishing clear decision criteria, generating and evaluating alternatives, and making timely decisions; taking action that is consistent with available facts and constraints and optimize probable consequences. 

• Accomplishing tasks by considering all areas involved, no matter how detailed; showing concern for all aspects of the job; accurately checking processes and tasks. 

• Developing and leveraging relationships within and across work groups to achieve results. 

• Actively identifying new areas for learning; regularly creating and taking advantage of learning opportunities; using newly gained knowledge and skill on the job and learning through their application. 

• Providing feedback, instruction, and development guidance to help others excel in their current or future job responsibilities; planning and supporting the development of individual skills and abilities. 

• Taking action to establish and maintain connections with people outside one’s formal work group, including those outside the organization (e.g., peers, cross-functional partners, and vendors), who are willing and able to provide the information, ideas, expertise, and/or influence needed to achieve work goals.  

• Effectively managing one’s time and resources to ensure that work is completed efficiently. 

Minimum Requirements 

This position requires a master's degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university. Additionally, Librarian II requires two years of increasingly responsible professional experience performing duties similar to a Librarian I in the City of San Bruno. 

Special Requirements 

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California driver’s license.

DEFINITION:

Under administrative direction, plans, organizes, manages, and provides direction and oversight for all functions and activities of the Planning Department, including current and advanced planning, code enforcement, building permits, economic development, environmental sustainability, open space acquisition and management, and housing; coordinates assigned activities with other Town departments and outside agencies; other assigned duties, and provides complex administrative support to the Town Manager.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This is a department head classification that oversees, directs and participates in all activities of the Planning Department, including short- and long-term planning, development and administration of departmental policies, procedures, and services.  This class serves as the Town’s professional expert on all matters related to the activities of the Planning Department.  Successful performance of the work requires knowledge of the public policy, municipal functions and activities, and the ability to develop, oversee, and implement projects and programs in a variety of areas.  Responsibilities include: coordinating the activities of the department with those of other local departments and agencies, managing and overseeing the complex and varied functions of the department, and ensuring that services provided are of the highest quality. The incumbent is accountable for accomplishing departmental planning and operational goals and objectives, and for furthering Town goals and objectives within general policy guidelines.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:

This position works under the general guidance of the Town Manager and exercises general direction and supervision over professional, technical, and administrative support staff.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER

A Community Service Officer is a non-sworn uniformed police technician who is responsible for basic criminal and traffic collision investigations, issuing parking citations and warnings, towing abandoned vehicles, and basic collection of investigative information and evidence. The duties of Community Service Officers are instrumental in ensuring the availability of sworn police officers to conduct more critical patrol activities. DEFINITION

Under general direction of the Library Services Manager, is responsible for branch operations on a system-wide basis.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Work in this classification is distinguished from the Librarian II by the greater degree of supervisory responsibility and the greater degree of independence with which the incumbent is expected to operate.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, planning, directing, and evaluating the work of clerical supervisors and senior branch staff; developing, revising, and monitoring branch library procedures; coordinating staff training and development; responding to and resolving complaints regarding branch materials, policies/ procedures and staff; providing and overseeing others in the provision of information and assistance to the public in all areas including reference, reader's advisory, and use of materials; recommending, selecting, and evaluating materials and analyzing users' needs and interests to determine collection additions and deletions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Modern professional library principles, practices and procedures; modern techniques regarding the processing and circulation of library materials; books and authors, standard bibliographies and other reference materials; community needs and interests and the local and regional resources available to meet them; the functions of the library as a community service and as a department of municipal government.

Ability to: Effectively direct the work of others; perform a variety of professional library work; develop and convey mastery of the automated systems related to the circulation function; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible professional experience in public library service.

Education: Graduation from college or equivalent, supplemented by successful completion of a graduate course of study in a professional library school.

License: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License.

The Event Security Operations Manager (SM3) plays a vital senior role in the management of security, medical response and emergency contingency plans for events occurring on the Stanford campus. The Position

The City of South San Francisco seeks customer service-oriented individuals to join the Community Resource Team at the new Library | Parks and Recreation Center. This position is shared between the Library Department and Parks and Recreation Department and works under the direction of the Community Resource Analyst. The Community Resource Clerk will typically be stationed at the lobby desks on the first and second floors of the new Library | Parks and Recreation Center at 901 Civic Campus Way in South San Francisco, however, may temporarily be assigned to other sites, or to represent the departments at special events. This position will provide a welcoming presence by greeting members of the public and responding to visitor inquiries to assist with wayfinding in the facility and sharing information about activities in the building as well as city and other local community resources.
