The San Mateo Public Library is seeking a creative, energetic and highly motivated individual to be a full-time Librarian in Children’s Services. In this position, the successful candidate will work collaboratively with a passionate team of youth services staff charged with serving children inside our three locations and outside our libraries through outreach to schools, daycares and other locations. What You’ll Do

• Advise and assist library patrons; demonstrate the use of on-line library catalogs, databases and other user aids; refer patrons to other appropriate agencies if appropriate.
• Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services in such areas as children, adult, and others using various themes and technologies; recommend program and procedure changes.
• Perform outreach to the community, community organizations, and schools within established design and framework.
• Serve on materials selection committee for the library; select and deselect materials for assigned area; evaluate and remove materials from the collection.

The City of Redwood City’s Library Department is looking for energetic people interested in working with teens to organize and conduct educational and recreational activities, assist with homework, provide educational support, provide information regarding library materials, helping the teens with computer usage and questions, and build cooperative, supportive and trusting relationships with the youth visiting the Teen Center. The Library Teen Center Educational & Recreation Specialist will also support the Project READ program, which is committed to the literacy needs of our community by providing student-centered tutoring lessons that focus on reading, writing and critical thinking skills.

Menlo Park Library seeks qualified candidates for on-call librarian positions in both the Adult and Youth Services divisions.

These extra-help, non-benefitted positions work on-call providing excellent customer service while performing a variety of professional library duties. Those duties could include reference, reader’s advisory, collection development and other tasks at a public information desk; leading events, programs or book clubs; digital literacy training for the public; and performing related work as assigned at the Menlo Park Main or Belle Haven branch library. A can-do attitude, a positive outlook, efficiency, approachability, and responsiveness to internal and external needs are all essential traits. Having a passion for libraries and a library's role in bridging technology gaps is required. Knowledge about technology, teaching and learning, and diversity is a must. Creativity, innovation, and flexibility are key to providing the quality of service our community deserves.

Schedules vary based on the needs of the library system. Both Menlo Park Library locations are open on Saturdays and Sundays. Selected candidates from this applicant pool may be assigned to work at either location. On-call librarian positions are scheduled for less than 20 hours per week and may not exceed 980 hours within a twelve (12) month period.

TYPICAL TASKS include, but are not limited to:

• Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment to provide service to our library users within general policy and legal guidelines.
• Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Under direct supervision, a Library Page is to sort, shelve, straighten, and relocate library materials on the shelves; pull library materials off shelves, and prepare the library for opening/closing procedures.  The ability to quickly and accurately sort items alphabetically and numerically.  This is an ideal job for someone who has good organizational skills, and able to work with others. A library page also provides basic directional information to library users.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

Standing in and walking between work areas is frequently required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and reach to perform assigned duties, as well as push and pull carts. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Leads activities that focus on reading, writing and math skill development with the use of computers, educational games and creative group projects.
• Fosters confidence, self-esteem and the love of learning in children.
• Assists in the computer lab with Internet use, word processing, and computer software.
• Supervises volunteers.
• Leads craft activities and games.
• Facilitates learning and works together with other assistants as part of a team.
• Must learn and implement the goals and philosophy of the Community Learning Center.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:
