Immediate Opening for Per Diem Library Assistant I (Circulation Services)

THE POSITION: The San Mateo Public Library is seeking an energetic individual to provide a wide variety of library support work. Duties include but are not limited to the following: respond to patron in-person and telephone requests for library materials, services and information; check out library materials to patrons; check in and prepare materials for return to the circulating collection; register new patrons; collect overdue fines; assist in order and receiving books, records, periodicals, and other library materials; maintain statistics of library use; handle patron complaints; assist adults and children in locating materials in the library and placing requests for materials not available. This recruitment is for one 15-hour Per Diem Library Assistant I position that supports Circulation Services at each of the three San Mateo Public Library locations. An eligibility list will be created for future openings in this classification.

SALARY AND HOURS: $28.76 per hour (Step 1). Below is the starting schedule for the Per Diem Library Assistant I position that may be changed in the future to meet the operational needs of the library. These positions are currently scheduled at two of the three San Mateo Public Library locations, Main and Hillsdale branches.  Availability at all three San Mateo Public Library branches is required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by clerical and specialized college level courses in library science; one year of experience performing general clerical or related work in a public library system.

ABILITY TO: Learn library practices and procedures, and the location of materials in the libraries; perform a variety of library technical and clerical work with speed and accuracy; assist patrons in the location and  use of library materials; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; speak and write clearly; learn the use of appropriate library automation systems; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work with numbers and alphabet accurately; type at a speed necessary for adequate job performance.

 As a Park Services Officer Aide, you will:  

• Drive to different park locations and assist in the daily operations and maintenance of park facilities and grounds. 
• Report unsafe conditions, incidents of vandalism, and other related conditions. 
• Provide exceptional customer service to park visitors, answering questions, providing information, and first aid to ill or injured visitors.
• Tactfully and effectively enforce park rules, issue warnings and citations.
• Participate in various park programs and events.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate loves working outdoors in various weather conditions, possesses strong customer service skills and a friendly, approachable demeanor, is flexible and willing to learn new tasks and skills, and can work independently and as part of a team. Basic knowledge of park operations and maintenance is a plus but not required.

Work Schedule: This is a 20-24-hour per week position. The regular work schedule is Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; weekend work may be occasionally required. This position is limited to up to 1000 hours per year. However, employment might end sooner, depending on the needs of the hiring department. Extra-help positions are paid hourly and are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the extra-help assignment.

The Department: 

The Santa Clara City Library is a department of the City and has positioned itself as a dynamic community hub, providing access to information, literacy resources, educational programming, and promotes civic engagement in Santa Clara. The Library Department is organized into seven divisions: Administration, Adult Services, Branch Services, Customer Services, Facilities, Technical and Technology Services and Youth Services. Santa Clara City Library has recently finalized and is in the ongoing process of implementing its new Strategic and Facilities Master Plans that will support the direction of future library services.

The Position: 

This is an entry-level, as-needed position, requiring no previous training or experience.  After training, a Library Page is assigned routine tasks and duties, and works under direct supervision. Duties include manual work in connection with the use and maintenance of library resources such as checking in and shelving library materials and assisting with meeting room setup. This position may also assist in supporting library programs and services, as well as helping to create a welcoming environment at the library.   

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively within a team while also being able to work independently. Strong communication skills, a commitment to excellent customer service, comfort with basic technology, and adaptability in a fast-paced public service environment are essential. Candidate should be someone who is approachable, dependable, and open to working in varied library locations. This recruitment is to fill multiple positions at Central Park and Northside Branch libraries.

As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

THE POSITION

The City of Redwood City is looking for a dynamic, energetic, team-oriented full-time (38-hours per week) Librarian, to coordinate the library’s outreach and deliver innovative programs and services for children and families throughout the community. The position is flexibly staffed at the Librarian I/II or Lead Librarian level, depending on the candidate’s experience. Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.

The current opening is based at the Downtown Library and will provide services and programs for youth at all three library locations and in the community. The position will require work during the day, evenings and weekends. POSITION DESCRIPTION 
 

The City of San Bruno Community Services Departments is hiring for a Library Page position at the San Bruno Public Library. The Library Page position is an entry-level, part-time role with limited benefits. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in playing a key role in the library's daily operations. Candidates must have a flexible schedule and be available to work 14-19 hours per week, including weekdays, evenings, and Saturdays, to meet the library's scheduling needs.

Under the general supervision of library staff, Library Pages perform routine tasks to maintain the organization of the library collections, including the shelving, sorting, and filing of books, magazines, audiovisual materials, and other library materials. Pages also clean and mend library materials, help set-up for various Library programs, assist in the opening and closing of the Library building for public access, and perform other clerical tasks as needed.

This role is physically active and requires regular movement and exertion. The ideal candidate will be comfortable performing physical tasks for extended periods and working in a fast-paced environment. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 

Knowledge of:

CIVIC FELLOW PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The City of Woodland has established a paid summer fellow program for individuals early in their career seeking public service experience. This program invests in our local workforce and fosters a passion for careers in the public sector. During the eight (8)-week program, fellows will work with a City department and participate in program-wide activities.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The City of Woodland Public Library is seeking a motivated and creative Library Fellow to lead a hands-on, project-based program for children in our makerspace, Square One. This fellowship provides an immersive opportunity to gain practical experience in program development, youth engagement, and community collaboration within a library setting.

The Fellow will be responsible for designing, implementing, and managing a part-time day camp program for elementary-aged students that encourages creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on learning. This includes evaluating existing curriculum, identifying areas for enhancement, and developing new project-based activities that align with educational best practices and the library’s mission.

Key responsibilities include:

• Program Development: Plan engaging, age-appropriate projects and activities for the makerspace, ensuring alignment with learning goals and safety guidelines.

The pay cycle is bi-weekly.  No other benefits compensations are provided except for worker's compensation coverage and sick leave.  Employees must contribute 1.45% of their salary to Medicare and 7.5% to a retirement plan under Federal Law.

Summary

Under general supervision, the Marketing Assistant assists in the planning and organization of registration, marketing, publicity, and community outreach efforts in accordance with District policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist in the development and implementation of social media strategies and campaigns
• Assist in the administration and maintenance of the District’s website
• Compile and maintain distribution lists for mailings and electronic communications
• Solicit feedback from participants and visitors through online surveys and distribute relevant response data to staff in the District units
• Promote District events, activities, facilities, and other special projects
• Support staff in District Units in the development of news releases, special event flyers/brochures, community announcements, project-based communications, or other communication methods

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty* satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

Education/Experience: A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: graduation from high school or GED and at least 2,000 hours of relevant work or volunteer experience, with at least 30 college units completed in recreation or a related field. An associate degree is preferred. Must be at least 18 years old. Experience working with Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Canva, and a variety of social media platforms. 

Language Ability: Ability to communicate effectively in English in both written and oral form. Ability to write routine correspondence using correct spelling and grammar.

Math Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to use common sense and excerise good judgement in solving problems. Ability to establish effective relationships with fellow employees, volunteers and participants and parents/guardians.

• Pediatric First Aid & CPR/AED within 90 days of employment

About the Position: The Library Activity Leader supports the Makerspace at the Downtown Library and potentially at the library branches and outreach events. They work with the library staff to create and deliver a variety of programs for children related to robotics, coding, and other STEM education concepts.  They may support additional Makerspace programming related to 3D printing, laser cutting, Cricut, machine sewing, and art projects.

San Mateo County Libraries is seeking individuals interested in making a difference in the lives of children and families. We will be hiring multiple vacancies for the position of Big Lift Inspiring Summers Learning Facilitator.
   

The Position: Learning Facilitators will be responsible for leading high-quality and connected learning experiences with children and collaborating with the other staff in a classroom environment for the Big Lift Summer Program. Learning Facilitators will establish and maintain an environment that embraces the growth mindset, actively facilitate open-ended, child-directed projects, and look for every opportunity to embrace and incorporate youth creativity.
 
Inspiring Summers Camps: The camps serve children reading below grade level in areas where the majority of youth qualify for free or reduced lunch. Staff working intensively with enrolled youth will have the opportunity to make our community a stronger, healthier, and more equitable place. These summer learning experiences are a critical part of San Mateo County's strategy to dramatically reduce the number of youth who cannot read on grade level, a problem that disproportionately affects youth of color and socioeconomically disadvantaged youth. Help us support youth in a summer program aimed to build confident youth who will have the benefit of high-quality, cutting-edge learning experiences with caring and passionate adults.
 
Location: Big Lift Inspiring Summer Learning Facilitators will be assigned to work at one of eight camps with children who will be entering kindergarten, first, second, or third grade in the Fall. The camps are located in Daly City, Half Moon Bay, Millbrae, Pacifica, Pescadero, San Bruno, and South San Francisco.
 
Schedule: This 6 to 7-week internship will begin with 8 days of required training and will then continue with a 4 to 5-week assignment in one of our learning camps. The camp assignment will either be part-time (20-28 hours per week, 4-5 hours per day Monday-Thursday and all day on Friday) or full-time (35-40 hours per week, 7-8 hours per day Monday-Friday).
 
MANDATORY IN-PERSON TRAINING WILL BEGIN TUESDAY, MAY 26, OR MONDAY, JUNE 1, 2025, depending on site placement.

Qualifications

These positions are designed to support college-aged students, recent graduates, and paraprofessionals working in youth education.
 
Education or Experience: Experience working with youth or a demonstrated interest in working with youth. Examples include experience coaching, tutoring, providing childcare, and taking child development coursework. Experience in theater, arts, music, youth development, early childhood, social justice, and science is also preferred.
 
Age Recruitment: must be 16 years or older. 
 
Language: Bilingual in Spanish preferred but not required.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Library Activity Leader supports the Youth Services and Neighborhood Libraries Divisions working year-round at the family friendly Redwood Shores Branch Library and Schaberg Branch Library. They work with library staff to create and deliver storytimes, events and programs, follow library policy and procedures, and provide excellent customer service to families, children and teens at the branch libraries.
