The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division is seeking seasonal Election Worker – Office Assistants to assist in the upcoming March 5, 2024 Presidential Primary Election. This is an excellent nonpartisan opportunity to be involved in the election process! We are currently seeking dedicated and hard-working individuals for temporary, full-time positions to be hired into one of the following areas:
Clerical Support/Vote by Mail
- Data entry
- Processing Vote by Mail ballots
- Retrieving ballots from the post office
- Counting ballots
- Operating ballot processing equipment
Ballot Retrieval- Retrieving voted ballots from Ballot Drop Boxes throughout San Mateo County
- Delivering voted ballots to San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division
- Driving County vans throughout the day (and evenings, as needed)
- May also help with delivering supplies to Vote Centers
Supplies- Inventorying and packing/unpacking Vote Center supplies
- Fulfilling inventory/supply lists for multiple Vote Centers
- Recording and updating inventory numbers regularly
- Operating pallet jacks and other devices to safely relocate supplies
- Accepting shipments and packages to the warehouse
- Delivering supplies to Vote Centers
- Valid California driver license required
Clerical Support/Voter Registration- Data entry
- Updating voter registration records based on information from statewide voter registration database and other governmental agencies
- Preparing, verifying, and processing provisional ballots including a review of challenged ballots
- Preparing, verifying, and processing petitions, including nominations, initiatives, and recall petitions and performing second-level petition verifications
Customer Service/Phone Bank- Assisting voters in finding election material and understanding their voting opportunities over the phone
Outreach Services- Demonstrating voting equipment
- Registering voters
- Presenting information about the upcoming election
Vote Center Help & Support- Answer and route calls from Vote Center Representatives, Field Techs and Ballot Retrieval Operations
- Assist Vote Center Representatives in resolving procedural, equipment and/or supplies issues at the Vote Centers
- Create, assign and/or resolve incident tickets
- Call center experience preferred, but not required
Voting Equipment- Function-testing voting equipment
- Assisting in delivery and pickup of voting equipment at Vote Centers
- Driving personal vehicles to and from Vote Centers to troubleshoot equipment (required)
Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin and/or Cantonese, Tagalog/Filipino, Korean, Burmese, Hindi, or Japanese is preferred in Customer Service/Phone Bank and Outreach Services but not required.
The hourly wage for this position starts at $21.72.
NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Extra-help hours are dependent on the business needs of the department and therefore work hours may vary from week to week. Extra help employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours of work per fiscal year. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.
- Qualifications
Ideal Clerical Support and Customer Service candidates will have a minimum of one year of general clerical, office assistant, phone services, or computer experience. Outreach Services candidates will have strong public speaking abilities and are bilingual in at least one of the above listed languages. Voting Equipment candidates will be able to lift and carry materials weighing more than 50 pounds and must use personal vehicles to service Vote Centers. Ballot Retrieval candidates will have a valid CA Driver License and be able to carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
Critical skills for all Election Worker Office Assistant positions include the ability to prioritize work, coordinate several activities, organize, and maintain accurate files and records, and understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Typical office hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. However, these positions may require working overtime, including long hours, weekends, evenings, and holidays. (Any authorized time worked more than 40 hours in the workweek shall be considered overtime and shall be compensable at the rate of one and one-half (1-1/2) times the overtime worked.
Generally, extra-help employees who work on a holiday shall be compensated for such time worked at the rate of one and one-half (1 1/2) times the straight-time rate as provided in the Overtime Section of this MOU for their work group).
The selected individuals must be available for the entire employment period until the completion of their assignment.
