THE POSITION

Assistant and Associate Engineering Technicians perform office and field engineering functions in connection with public works activities. The current vacancy is assigned to Construction Inspection and will perform field inspections of public works projects, developments, and activities requiring permits and inspection; and inspects grading, underground utilities, City water mains, sewers, storm drains, curbs, gutters, paving, irrigation systems, streetlights, and other infrastructure construction for conformance with regulatory standards, plans, and specifications. The Assistant Engineering Technician is the entry level classification in the series, and the Associate Engineering Technician is the journey level classification in the Engineering Technician series, with responsibility for more complicated technical tasks.

Examples of duties and responsibilities may include:

• Performs field inspections of public works projects, developments, and activities requiring permits and inspection
• Inspects grading, underground utilities, City water mains, sewers, storm drains, curbs, gutters, paving, irrigation systems, street lights, and other infrastructure construction for conformance with regulatory standards, plans, and specifications
• Maintains daily written records of progress made in construction and materials used
• Makes progress payments, writes change orders, and performs other contract administration duties on routine public works projects
• Assists contractors and the public in interpreting and complying with construction requirements
• Prepares monthly progress payment records
• Issues stop work orders when necessary
• Checks compliance of contractors with local, regional, state, and federal regulations including those governing wages and payroll
• Investigates and resolves citizen complaints regarding construction work on City facilities
• Enforces safety regulations

THE POSITION

The Water Resources Instrument Control Technician installs, operates, maintains, calibrates, and repairs computer hardware, process instrumentation, and telemetry equipment; de-bugs, modifies, and customizes software; modifies, maintains, and repairs all components of a programmable logic controller (PLC) based supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems/distributed control systems; and performs other duties as assigned.

Examples of duties and responsibilities may include:

• Installs, calibrates, programs, maintains, and repairs instruments, PLC based system/distributed control system components, meters, analyzers, recorders, control and feed systems, computers, monitors, printers, transducers, microprocessors, and data transmission systems
• Maintains and repairs electronics, electrical, pneumatic, mechanical, and hydraulic systems, laboratory and safety equipment including gas detection, alarm systems, pH and DO meters;
• Analyzes and modifies computer programs to optimize plant operations and operator convenience
• Assists system users in solving data and systems problems and suggests alternative methods of operation

THE POSITION
Incumbent will perform sub-professional engineering work in the areas of design, construction, surveying, traffic and land development; to perform office and field duties including drafting, assisting in construction inspection, permit issuance, engineering research and traffic counts. 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED & EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Division Manager. Functional or technical supervision may also be provided by professional or management level positions.

THE POSITION

Under supervision, a Building Inspector I performs detailed inspection of structures for conformance to codes, ordinances, approved plans, calculations, and specification; and other duties as assigned.

Examples of Important and Essential Functions

Field Inspection Functions

Performs building, fire, electrical, plumbing and mechanical inspections of all structures during construction to ensure conformance to City/State codes, ordinances, approved plans, calculations, and specifications, using appropriate safety precautions; checks for setbacks and conformance to zoning regulations; checks signs and fences; investigates complaints; interprets codes, reports violations and hazardous conditions and orders corrections; notifies builders of required changes and makes re- inspections; performs fire prevention inspections and investigations of new and existing structures; and advises the public regarding construction practices and principles.

Administrative Functions

Reviews plans and specifications for the purpose of conducting building inspection work; prepares records, reports and correspondence; utilizes personal computers to perform data entry functions; and may be assigned to assist in the Permit Center, as needed.
