The Department of Public Works seeks well-qualified candidates for the position of Crafts Supervisor.
Crafts Supervisors are working supervisors who coordinate and supervise a variety of building repairs and maintenance activities at facilities throughout San Mateo County. Their primary responsibility includes supervising the work of skilled trade and service workers, carpenters, painters, electricians, and utility workers. The position also manages the construction of project work for the Capital Program assigned to Construction Services; develops cost estimates, manages project budgets, meets with clients, manages MS Project schedules, and promotes the work that the Construction Services Section (CSS) can provide to its client base. The supervisor is also responsible for developing and managing the annual budget for this division of the department. This vacancy is in the Construction Services Section, located at 40 Tower Road in San Mateo, CA.

In addition, the ideal candidate will possess demonstrated success with:
- Managing the bid and award process, including solicitation and evaluation of bids
- Ensuring assigned projects are on schedule, on budget, and the project manager is effectively communicating with impacted parties, such as stakeholders, contractors, consultants, and staff
- Using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to schedule, dispatch, track, and document work accomplished
- Using CMMS to develop Key Process Indicators to manage the progress of the team
- Maintaining records pertaining to design and construction progress, job expenditures, and budget balances
- Performing skilled journey work in the area of expertise
- Supervising skilled trade and service workers, carpenters, painters, electricians, and utility workers
Willingness to work outside normal work hours - weekends, on-call, and/or evenings - is required.

QUALIFICATIONS
License: Possession of a valid California class C driver license or equivalent.
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is four years of journey level experience in a construction trade such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, or other related trade. Supervisory experience is strongly preferred.
Knowledge of: State Safety Orders; Uniform Building Code; National Electric Code (electrical option only); supervisory principles and practices, including work planning, scheduling, employee motivation, training, and evaluation; project management principles, practices, methods, and techniques; principles and techniques of construction cost estimating; basic mathematics for measuring, calibrating, and estimating; methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in construction and building maintenance and repair work; basic computer operations; building codes, construction standards, and safety regulations related to building maintenance, repair, and construction; and purchasing and warehousing of materials, equipment, and supplies.
Skill/Ability to: Supervise, train, direct, motivate, and evaluate skilled trades workers and general maintenance workers; plan and organize the work of subordinates; follow and teach safety practices; manage all aspects of repair, maintenance, and construction projects; read and interpret plans and specifications; prepare project schedules, cost estimates, and work sketches; perform skilled journey work in the area of expertise; follow oral and written instructions; prepare and maintain accurate records; operate a personal or on-line computer; use a Computerized Maintenance Management System; establish and maintain effective and courteous relationships with customers and co-workers; effectively communicate orally and in writing; lift and carry materials, supplies, and equipment; climb ladders; and crawl in tight spaces.
Other Requirements: Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance as a condition of employment. Must be willing to work evenings, weekends, on-call, or outside normal work hours. Prior to starting work, most prospective employees are required to pass a medical examination administered by the County. Positions may also require special exams required by the DMV, OSHA, or other regulatory bodies.
