The City of Menlo Park is looking for responsible and enthusiastic part-time Recreation Leaders and Senior Recreation Leaders to assist with the Library and Community Services Department after school programs, sports, events and senior center programs.

We are looking for enthusiastic, driven and responsible Recreation Leaders who enjoy working with various youth ages/seniors and creating a fun, safe, positive and thriving environment.

Shifts vary between 7:00AM – 10:00PM (most positions in sports and events have a later end time while youth/senior programs typically are day time hours). 

About the Position

Depending upon the program assigned to, the duties of a Recreation Leader/Senior Recreation Leader may include, but are not limited to, the following:

After School Programs

• Ability to open/close facilities
• Monitor, coordinate and run classes
• Set up and break down of events
• Printing rosters for instructors

Arrillaga Recreation Center (Events)

• Responsible for opening and closing the building.  
• Responsible for set up and clean-up of events and facility rentals. 
• Oversee and supervise the Recreation facilities during facility rentals. 

Gymnasium/Sports

• Performing outstanding customer service
• Answering phones
• Basketball, Volleyball and Softball scorekeeping
• Ability to use learn and perform tasks on recreation software systems
• May be responsible for handling money and organizing class sign in sheets. 

Senior Center

• Help serving meals
• Help coordinating activities
• Kitchen Cooks

BASIC EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Supervises a small crew and participates in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, curbs, gutters, sewers, storm drains, catch basins, barricades, sidewalks, parks, landscaped areas, and recreation equipment and facilities;

• Operates and makes minor repairs and adjustments to heavy power-driven equipment; constructs forms for and does cement work;

• Does occasional brick work and building construction and maintenance work; builds retaining walls;

THE DEPARTMENT

The Parks and Recreation Department is the third largest department in the City and is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. The Parks and Recreation Department is composed of a Director and 22 full-time management positions. The department is comprised of the Recreation, Community Services, Parks, Facilities and Common Greens divisions.

The Recreation Division consists of seven program areas, including Aquatics, Classes, Cultural Arts, Childcare, Senior Services, Sports and Rentals. The Child Care Program Area includes three preschools for children 2.5 to 5 years; four licensed after school recreation programs for school-age children Kindergarten-12 years; two grant funded ASES programs (REAL Program) designed for academic support for school age children Kindergarten–12 years old; Summer, Spring and Winter camps for children kindergarten through 12 years old; TEEN camp in Summer; Full of Fun Camp and Nights of Fun.

THE POSITION  

The Preschool Teacher will direct, plan, develop, and implement an educational program that provides for the full intellectual and social development of each child.  This journey-level classification is distinguished from the next higher level in that this classification has sites and few administrative and coordinative responsibilities.

Incumbents daily have direct contact with the children and parents.  Incumbents must perform in accordance with specific instructions and are reviewed for compliance with State of California requirements.

Depending on the level of experience, the vacancy will be filled as either a Preschool Teacher I or Preschool Teacher II. 

The City Manager has administrative responsibility and authority to ensure that the laws and ordinances of the Town are duly enforced. The City Manager is responsible for managing and giving direction to all department heads, except for the City Attorney. The City Manager is appointed by, and serves at the pleasure of, the City Council.

Essential responsibilities of the City Manager include:

• Representing the Town with other governmental agencies
• Recommending adoption of ordinances and resolutions to execute the City Council’s policies
• Advising the City Council of the fiscal condition of the Town
• Preparing an annual budget and Capital Improvement Plan
• Exercising general supervision over all public buildings, parks, and other public properties under the control of the Town
• Appointing or removing employees of the Town
• Keeping apprised and informing the City Council of proposed and
  newly adopted laws, trends and societal changes that could affect
  the Town
• Monitoring and informing the City Council of upcoming
  significant contract renewals and the status of
  major Town projects.

The City of Foster City is searching for talented, energetic, responsible individuals who are serious about having fun! If you can think on your feet and be a fun team player, this could be the position for you! As a Recreation Leader, you’ll be responsible for implementing quality youth and teen programs and providing a safe environment for our participants. This is a part-time, non-benefited position limited to 29 hours per week and 1,000 hours in a fiscal year.

Salary

• $14.00 - $18.30 hourly; Pay rate determined by experience, education and assigned level of responsibility.

Important and Essential Duties 

• Must be at least 16 years of age to apply
• Supervise youth and teens in city programming, which may include after school programs, teen center, vacation and summer camps, and special events. 
• Take initiative to plan, organize, and implement high activity games, program special events and daily schedules, and community events. 
• Stay active and engaged with youth and teens at all times. 
• Act as a professional role model, mentor, and leader. 
• Enforce guidelines and maintain a safe, clean, well-organized environment. 
• Communicate effectively and respectfully with youth, parent/guardians, staff, and community members.
• Provide exemplary customer service.
• Attend monthly staff meetings and trainings.
• Work closely with external organizations and staff.
• May supervise staff.

Afterschool Recreational Care (ARC) Program: We are looking for Recreation Leaders to assist with homework, lead recreational activities, and plan enrichment classes for youth participants. Candidates must commit to working for the entire duration of the school year (August 2021 through June 2022). Work hours will vary, but typically shifts will be from Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 2:00pm-6:00pm and Wednesdays 12:00pm-6:00pm. There will be some additional hours with our “Kidz Dayz.”No weekends shifts are available. 

The Vibe Teen Center: We are looking for Recreation Leaders to assist with supervision, lead recreational activities, supervise rentals, and plan special events for teens. Work hours will vary, but typically will be from Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 3:00pm-6:30pm; Wednesdays 2:00pm-6:30pm; Fridays 3:00pm-10:00pm. Some weekend shifts are available.   

EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES: 

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be: 

• Education: Completion of the tenth grade or equivalent.
• Experience: Volunteer or paid experience working with groups of children. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Ability to: lift and move equipment (up to 25 lbs.); complete forms and reports; ability to set-up and coordinate activities; remain calm and use good judgment in difficult and emergency situations; work flexible hours. Physical strength and stamina will be required in some positions to perform demonstrations and leads activities. 

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATION: 

• Licenses: None
• Certificates: Must maintain a current CPR/AED and basic First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain within three months of employment.
