Management Analyst Intern

This internship provides an excellent opportunity for an individual interested in Public Administration to enhance their administrative and analytical knowledge, skills, and abilities. Through mentorship and under general supervision, the incumbent will be responsible to complete specific projects and a variety of on-going assignments to help develop their knowledge and skills. This is a training opportunity position reporting to an assigned Department. There may be several evening obligations, such as attending City Council meetings or other community events. 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Maintain records/document management system.
• Conduct public outreach/media (i.e. tax initiative).
• Conduct research/study on technology enhancing.
• Assist in the development and coordination of marketing and branding.
• Perform data analysis.
• Create various electronic forms.
• Create templates for reporting purposes.

• Coordinate projects across departments within the organization.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities are qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education, Training & Experience

Enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program with demonstrated interest/experience in communications, marketing, international relations and community engagement or closely related academic program.

Possession of a valid California Driver’s License may be required.

Knowledge of:

• Social media platforms including Town Hall, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Nextdoor, LinkedIn and other tools.
• Social media management and analytics tools and web content development.
• Research and related reporting strategies.
• Desktop software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher.
• Familiarity with email marketing tools.
• Adobe Creative Suite.
• Records management principles and practices.
• Computer applications related to the work.
• Project management, policy analysis principles, program/policy evaluation or organizational development.

Ability to:

• Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, and work cooperatively with Town staff.
• Plan, develop, review and complete projects in a timely manner.
• Interpret and apply administrative and departmental policies and procedures.

The City of Brisbane will be sponsoring up to 5 summer internships this year.  Our internships are project oriented and are designed to give college students a good general overview of future employment opportunities and current issues in the Public Sector.  You will have the opportunity for exposure to various areas of City Administration during your internship, as well as have opportunities to network with fellow interns and participate in professional development activities in San Mateo County and/or Santa Clara County.

Projects for 2020 include

• City Administration – Provide research support in the City Manager’s Office on Smart Cities technology.  Review other public agency’s Smart Cities programs, research types of innovation available and propose project design for the City to implement.
• Records Management – Assist in project oversight of our records management project, create innovate best practices to implement the records retention schedule and policy, and support the daily records management tasks in the City Clerk’s Office.
• Police- Provide support to Patrol Services including projects within administration, property/evidence and records. Obtain an understanding of Patrol Operations including investigations and prosecution of cases.

Applicants must be college students currently enrolled in and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university in a related field (e.g. public administration, public policy, business, planning, library science, environmental studies, engineering, sustainability). Undergraduate candidates must have a minimum 48 semester units or equivalent completed.  Applicants should also be self-motivated, have excellent interpersonal skills, able to use Microsoft Office software, demonstrate good research ability and have the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. 

SALARY AND HOURS:  Salary range for Interns is from $15.00-$20.00 per hour, less than 999 hours per year, over a 12 week or year round period.  Start date is flexible depending on student’s availability.

About the Position

The City of San Carlos offers rewarding part-time, 20-hour per week, non-benefited summer internship positions. The positions begin in May-June 2020 and ends in August-September 2020 (depending on school schedule of selected candidate(s)). The main functions of the job are to perform municipal research and analytical work on an entry level professional basis. The City is offering internships this year in three areas of interest – City Manager’s Office, Public Works Department, and Community Development Department. Each intern’s workload will be a balance of assisting in daily municipal operations and special projects.

City Manager’s Office Internship

This intern will receive various assignments from the City Manager’s Office and other City departments as needed. Duties may include, but are not limited to: assistance with citywide communications, including website content management, social media efforts and communications video series; applying for grants and awards; conducting research on various topics; and completing other special projects. The position will serve as a temporary staff member, and will receive overall work direction from the Senior Management Analyst in the City Manager’s Office.

Public Works Department (Engineering Division) Internship

This intern will receive various assignments from the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. Duties may include, but are not limited to: assistance with citywide communications informing the public of Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects and other Public Works programs; technical engineering calculations related to the CIP; Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) work; mapping the City’s infrastructure; and planning, design and construction of Public Works projects. The position will serve as a temporary staff member, and will receive overall work direction from the Senior Engineer in the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department.

Community Development Department (Planning Division) Internship

The intern will receive various assignments from the Planning Division of the Community Development Department. Duties may include, but are not limited to: planning, zoning and housing analysis; research and analysis of planning data; review of development proposals, building plans, permits and parcel maps; and data analysis of relevant laws, ordinances, regulations and policies. The position will serve as a temporary staff member, and will receive overall work direction from the Planning Manager in the Planning Division of the Community Development Department.

The primary goal of the City’s Internship Program is to provide college students or recent college graduates an opportunity to apply their academic training to and learn more about the various functions of municipal government. These paid internships provide hands-on experience in the daily operations of municipal government on all levels, thus enhancing the intern’s skills and resume for a future career in government.

The San Mateo Medical Center operates five dental clinics located in San Mateo, Redwood City, Daly City, Half Moon Bay, and a Mobile Dental Clinic. These clinics treat children and adults, homeless and transitional populations, and patients with HIV diagnosis. Pregnant women on Medi-Cal can also obtain dental services in these clinics covered by the Ryan White grant.

All Clinics are open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM and some Saturdays and evenings.  The Fair Oaks Health Center in Redwood City is staffed with an oral surgeon and pedodontist, and the San Mateo Clinic is staffed with an oral surgeon.  The Fair Oaks Health Center and the Mobile Dental Clinic host dental students from the University of the Pacific and University of San Francisco to aid in patient care.

The Dental Assistant Series levels include:
 
Dental Assistant I ($21.59 - $26.99 Hourly) is the experienced level class in the Dental Assistant series, competent to independently perform the full range of journey-level dental assisting work under the supervision of a dentist. This class is flexibly staffed with the II level and incumbents may advance to the higher level after obtaining required certification and demonstrating the required proficiency for the II level.

Dental Assistant II/Registered Dental Assistant ($25.52 - $31.90 Hourly) is the advanced journey-level classification in the series. Under the supervision of a dentist, incumbents at this level perform dental assisting duties which are limited to a person certified as a Registered Dental Assistant in addition to performing Dental Assistant duties of the lower.

This hourly position is not in Civil Service and does not receive benefits.

DEFINITION

Under direction, the Video Technician assists with the development of television programming and operates a variety of video production equipment for live cablecasts of public meetings and for preparation and playback of pre-recorded video programs and performs other work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Control remote and portable video cameras, operate digital video recorders and audio equipment for the live cablecasting of public meetings. Choose camera shots, graphics, and adjusts audio levels. View action on monitors; control contrast, brilliance, color balance, and fidelity and audio quality of cablecasted television signal. Inspect video production equipment for proper operation, control, and safety; make minor adjustments and temporary repairs to equipment as necessary. Assist in the production of programs including desktop editing. Create video "slides" using a variety of text, sounds, and graphics including backgrounds, borders and video images. Operate a variety of video imaging and scheduling software and/or character generators. Create automated shows using combinations of video "slides" and/or machine control commands. Duplicate and label DVDs. Maintain records of work performed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Television and video production techniques, operations and equipment. Video and computer graphics.

Ability to:     Operate television production equipment such as field and studio cameras, digital recorders, editing equipment, switchers/special effects generators, and character generators; set up, operate and monitor equipment, such as, lights, microphones, audio mixers; follow oral and written directions; work independently or as part of a team; follow safe work practices; work evenings and attend meetings; and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent. College level course work in television production and/or digital video imaging desirable.

Experience: One year of video production employment desirable including live video production experience. 

License: Possession of a valid Class "C" California Driver's License.
