RECREATION LEADER

Open until filled – Six (6) positions available

Day Camp and Aquatic Season, Part-time/Seasonal

Summary Description

Under the direction of the Senior Recreation Leader or an assigned supervisor/coordinator, the Recreation Leader is responsible for assisting in organizing and leading activities for children and adults in the City’s recreation programs including youth and adult programs, aquatics programs and senior programs; or when assigned to site responsibilities, monitoring the public and private use of city-owned facilities. Such use may include, but is not limited to, meetings, weddings, parties, dances, recreational events, etc. This position will provide excellent customer service both internally and externally at all times and can require set-up and clean-up for scheduled activities.  This is an at-will, intermittent, part-time, hourly wage position without City-paid benefits. Some evening and weekend work may be required.

Representative Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices:

When assigned to Recreation Activities

1. Implement all daily activities of the program as assigned, including carrying out program schedule, participating in all program activities, monitoring and enforcing rules and regulations, maintaining a safe environment and collecting any necessary paperwork.
2. Assist Senior Recreation Leader in implementing program objectives and collecting relevant data.
3. Assist with maintaining on-site safety for participants, observers, volunteers and other involved in the program.
4. Instruct program participants in rules, model appropriate behavior and monitor strict adherence to program guidelines and enforce rules.
5. Exercise sound judgment in addressing behavior problems.
6. Responsible for appropriate use, maintenance and storage of all program supplies and equipment.
7. Establish and maintain a respectful and courteous working relationship with participant, volunteers, staff and those contacted in the course of work.
8. Exhibit enthusiasm for the program.
9. Perform other program related duties as assigned.
   When assigned to Facilities/Site Monitoring
10. Monitor the use of city owned facilities and ensure the strict adherence to the rules governing the use of city facilities.
11. Responsible for the appropriate use, minor repair of, and proper storage of supplies and equipment used in city facilities.
12. Coordinate facility arrangements with instructors, rental groups and maintenance personnel.
13. Track equipment issued during rentals.
14. Provide excellent customer service to all customers, employees, citizens and guests using city facilities.
15. Ensure that facilities and restrooms are properly cleaned and ready for the next scheduled use.
16. Inspect facility for potential safety hazards, eliminate and/or report such hazards.
17. Assist in the setup, take down and cleanup processes as needed.
18. Routinely adhere to and maintain a positive attitude towards City and Department goals.
19. Perform related work as required.

The Position:

The Recreation and Community Services Director reports to the City Manager and is focused on providing superb customer service through the delivery of high quality and cost effective services.  The Recreation Department is viewed as responsive, with the ability to deliver a broad array of programs and services.  In driving key business partnerships with public and private organizations, the Director must continue to serve as a team-oriented leader who offers innovative solutions and facilitates    ongoing communications with all stakeholders.

Serving as a key strategic resource as part of the City’s executive team, the Director will take a leadership role in helping mentor and lead a great team of employees while actively involving the community and residents.

The Recreation and Community Services Director plans, organizes, analyzes and directs the delivery of Recreation and Community Services activities and programs.  The Director has an essential role in fiscal management, while maintaining the successful operation of the Campbell Community Center, Theater, Museum, Ainsley House and Adult Center.  Incumbent is expected to exercise independent judgment, knowledge, and initiative in establishing efficient and effective departmental operations consistent with City Council policies and administrative guidelines.

Ideal Candidate: 

The ideal candidate will have an extensive background in recreation with exposure to a variety of program types. Someone who is familiar and sensitive to working with the unique challenges that are inherent to this position.  Someone who deals well with families, preschoolers and their parents, seniors, teen recreation staff, fitness instructors, museum board and foundation members and theatre management. An individual with strong budget  experience with an understanding of cost recovery and the ability to explore unique funding opportunities and community partnerships. An individual with experience in supervising a year-round aquatics program, summer day camps, preschool programs, and experience in supervising special events, working with non-profits and fundraising is being sought.  The City seeks an individual who will build on the team environment that exists among the staff and who has very good interpersonal skills.  The desired candidate will be a self-starter, results-oriented individual with good communication and strong interpersonal skills who has integrity, is ethical, energetic and innovative.

Education and Experience:

This position will require an experience base of a minimum of five years of management experience in recreation/leisure   services (Master's Degree in recreation/leisure services may be substituted for one year of the required experience).  Education equivalent to graduation from a college or university with major work in recreation/leisure services, or closely  related field.

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

• 1-2 years paid experience supervising staff or team lead.  
• Experience with recreation program management.  
• Must be 18 years or older.  
• College coursework required. Coursework in Recreation, Child Development, Administration, Environmental Education or related field preferred.  

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

• Possess good organization and problem-solving skills.

COMPENSATION:
This is a part-time, seasonal position. Approximately 29 hours per week.

Recreation Leader III - $18.75 to $21.75 hourly (Depending on experience)

Temporary employees are non-benefited, at-will positions. Since the City does not participate in Social Security and is required to provide an alternative retirement plan, you are required to participate in the City's defined contribution retirement plan through Nationwide where 3.75% of your gross compensation per pay period is deducted and put into the plan. The City matches this 3.75% for a total contribution of 7.5% of your gross compensation per pay period.
