Selection Procedure

Based on the application screening, those candidates with the most relevant qualifications will be invited to a panel interview and practical exam. In the practical exam, candidates will demonstrate their knowledge of and ability to operate various maintenance equipment.

About the Position

The City of San Carlos has an opportunity for a full-time Maintenance Worker to work in their Public Works Department. This classification performs a variety of routine, heavy labor and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of public works facilities, City parks, and City buildings.

Essential Duties

• Perform daily safety checks and routine maintenance of equipment to ensure it is safe for use.
• Use proper techniques for operation of equipment and tools in a safe manner, according to accepted City procedures.
• Operate maintenance equipment and tools such as trucks, power tools, sewer rodder, hydraulic jet rodder/vacuum truck, loader backhoe, compressor, boom truck, CCTV truck, pneumatic and electro-mechanical controls, and related equipment and tools for a variety of construction and maintenance operations.
• Perform on-call duties and work in emergency situations as required.
• Install, repair and modify pump station machinery and controls.
• Check pump stations for proper operation; troubleshoot and remedy malfunctions and stoppages.
• Read and interpret maps of underground sewer and drainage systems.
• Paint traffic markings on streets, crosswalks, parking lots, and curbs; operate airless line striping equipment.
• Manufacture and install traffic signs and remove signs no longer required.
• Design and manufacture special signs for municipal facilities.
• Install and remove traffic barricades and cones as required.
• Repair surface failures, utility cuts, chuckholes and seals cracks in asphalt pavements properly and competently.
• Break out and replace concrete sidewalks and gutters using a concrete saw, pavement breaker, wooden forms, and hand tools to finish the surface.
• Clean sanitary sewer lines using hand tools, a hydraulic jet rodder/vacuum and mechanical rodder.
• Excavate, remove, and install sanitary sewer pipes utilizing hand tools, power tools such as pneumatic pavement breakers, compaction equipment and loader backhoe.
• Repair storm drains, catch basins and storm drain pipes.
• Drive dump trucks to haul material to and from the job sites.
• Rake leaves, shovel and digs holes.
• Pick up and dispose of trash and debris from parks and roadsides.
• Control the growth of weeds in lawn areas, shrub areas and flower beds using hand tools, spray equipment and weed eaters.
• Trim trees, hedges, and shrubs using appropriate equipment, remove debris.
• Check irrigation sprinkler systems and ensures their proper functioning, by cleaning and adjusting heads and digging up and repairing broken lines.
• Clean City's park buildings by sweeping and mopping floors, carpets, and cleaning restroom facilities. Replaces light bulbs.
• Provide set up of tables and chairs for City functions.

The City of Thousand Oaks is seeking highly motivated and results oriented Utilities Maintenance Workers for the Water and Wastewater divisions.  Dependent upon candidate qualifications, the vacancies will be filled at the I, II or Trainee levels.  The successful candidate will work at the City’s Municipal Service Center in the Newbury Park area of Thousand Oaks.

The Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo is seeking Deputy Court Clerks to perform a variety of legal office support duties for the court's various divisions.

Under general supervision, Deputy Court Clerks receive, prepare, process and file a variety of legal documents for the family law, records, appeals, probate, criminal, civil, traffic, small claims and other divisions of the court. They also perform responsible office support duties adhering to legal codes and court procedures. There are currently several vacancies to be filled in the Superior Court of California.
 
Deputy Court Clerk I ($23.44-$29.22/hr)* is an entry level classification. Under close supervision, the Deputy Court Clerk I will learn departmental and court policies and procedures, legal terminology, and court processes and practices. Incumbents may advance to a Deputy Court Clerk II after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency, which meet the qualifications for the Deputy Court Clerk II.

Deputy Court Clerk II ($25.43-$31.69/hr)* is the journey, or experienced, level classification and is fully competent to independently perform a variety of complex and detailed office and court support duties. Incumbents are expected to perform the day-to-day work with minimum supervision and to exercise sound judgment in applying legal codes, court policies and procedures.

The ideal candidate will possess:

The court anticipates that over the next few months there will be several vacancies for Deputy Court Clerks. The vacancies will be Limited Term positions.  Although the court will be hiring for limited term positions, regular permanent positions are often available after one year of employment. Limited term employees work in assignments not to exceed three years. They receive medical and dental benefits, similar to regular employees, and a defined contribution retirement plan. The eligible or hiring list created from this recruitment will be used to fill these limited term vacancies and could also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, limited term and extra-help vacancies.

The work environment for a Deputy Court Clerk is a "typical" office space that is generally clean with limited exposure to dust, fumes, odors and noise. A video display terminal/computer monitor is used on a daily basis. Conditions can at times be difficult and stressful with frequent deadlines and the expectation to produce high quality work under time constraints. Periodic, regular, and/or occasional contact with employees in other court divisions, government agencies, the public, and/or vendors will require the ability to communicate appropriately with diverse populations regarding inquiries and requests. The ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with others is essential.

The position has some physical demands, which include working at a computer terminal for extended periods of time; sitting or standing for long periods of time; stooping and reaching above shoulder level; climbing on ladders to access files on shelves; bending, lifting and carrying items weighing up to 25 pounds; working in a fast-paced environment; utilizing normal manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; repetitively using hands and arms; moving from one location to another; having corrected hearing and vision to normal range;communicating verbally; and using office equipment, including computers, telephones, calculators, copiers and fax machines.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

Deputy Court Clerk I: One year of general clerical, office assistant experience and/or related education or course work.

Deputy Court Clerk II: One year of experience in receiving, preparing, processing, and filing a variety of legal documents such as found in the court or similar legal office setting.

Knowledge of:

• Courts office practices and procedures, legal codes, processes and terminology and the operation of standard office equipment.
• Principles and techniques for dealing with the public, including maintaining a positive public image under stressful situations.

The City of Burlingame is accepting applications for the position of Temporary Parks and Tree Worker.

The Position

Under the direct supervision of a Lead Worker, or higher level staff, the Parks and Tree Worker performs a variety of gardening, landscape and tree maintenance duties associated with the development, repair, and maintenance of public landscaped areas and trees, and performs related work as required.

Examples of Duties (include but are not limited to the following)

• Maintain grounds and plantings in City parks, recreation facilities, playground areas, municipal building grounds, and street median islands.
• Maintain designated landscape effects through mowing, edging, pruning, weeding, and planting lawns, shrubs, ground cover, trees, and flower beds.
• Pick up, clean and remove trash and debris from parks and public property; clean restrooms and park buildings; remove graffiti.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of: Basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in grounds and tree maintenance work; basic construction and repair methods; and safe work practices.

Ability to: Perform semi-skilled landscape maintenance work; learn to operate the full range of light and heavy equipment used in landscape and tree maintenance work; work off of ladders; set up safe work sites; learn geography of the City and sites of City parks and maintenance areas; work cooperatively and effectively with co-workers and provide general assistance to the public; work weekends and holidays as required; learn multiple safety procedures and practices related to landscape maintenance, tree maintenance and tree removal.

Skills: Ability to efficiently use hand and power tools listed above required in general park and tree work, and learn to use new equipment as required.

Education and Experience: Sufficient education and experience to perform the above duties which is typically obtained through prior experience in gardening, grounds keeping, landscape, construction or tree work and completion of the twelfth grade or equivalent.

License/Certificate: Class C driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Working Conditions

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting trees and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 55 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. The incumbent may be exposed to fumes, dust, and air contaminants, and may be exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to use power and noise producing tools and equipment, including the frequent use of chainsaws, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions, use proper safety equipment when using noisy and dangerous equipment, hear well enough to follow directions, and see well enough to read instructions.

THE PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT:  The Parks and Recreation Director heads up a staff that includes three full-time Supervisors, three Landscapers, two custodians, a full-time Administrative Aide and a number of part-time Recreation Leaders and volunteers.  A dedicated and energetic Parks and Recreation Commission assists the staff in successfully planning and carrying out a number of year-round special events and programs, in coordinating a varied offering of classes and sports activities, and in spearheading improvement and beautification projects for City parks and public facilities.

The Recreation Supervisor, under direction of the Parks and Recreation Director, plans, organizes, hires contractors and part time staff, and promotes and supervises programs, classes, and events for groups from tots to seniors. The Supervisor will also play a key role in the planning and production of the City’s many annual special events that have become fond traditions in this small city.

Position & Duties 

The Community Energy Department is seeking to fill one (1) full-time Power Resources Specialist I/II position to the Regulatory and Legislative Compliance Division. This position reports directly to the Division Manager of Regulatory and Legislative Policy and will support a variety of Regulatory and Legislative Policy functions. 

Under general direction of the Division Manager of Regulatory and Legislative Policy, the Power Resources Specialist I/II will be responsible for assisting and supporting the division’s engagement in the number of complex electric regulatory proceedings in order to effectively advocate for the business interests of SJCE at the California Public Utilities Commission (“CPUC”), the California Energy Commission (CEC) and the California Independent System Operator (“CAISO”) to protect and advance San José business and community interests.

Typical duties of this position may include, but are not limited to:

• Evaluate regulatory and legislative initiatives to ensure compliance with energy risk management policies.

• Perform energy resource planning and electric utility tariff analysis, policy risk assessment, and provide technical analysis to comply with applicable federal, state and local laws.

• Support the preparation of comments, data requests, written responses, position papers, analytical models, testimony, and exhibits related to a variety of technical regulatory proceedings.

• Maintain and update a short and/ or long-term list and calendar of key regulatory issues affecting SJCE.

Salary Information

The current salary range for Power Resources Specialist I is: $80,454.40 - $98,030.40

The current salary range for Power Resources Specialist II is: $87,547.20 - $106,641.60

The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidate’s qualifications and experience.

In addition to the starting salary, employees in the Senior Power Resources Specialist I/II classification shall also receive an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing, non-pensionable, compensation pay.

Water System Supervisor

THE POSITION

The City of Chowchilla is seeking a full time Water System Supervisor who, under general direction, supervises, develops, and directs the work of staff performing difficult and complex technical and administrative support related to all programs and activities of the City’s water distribution division; assists with long- and short-term project planning and overseeing the design, construction, maintenance, and operations of water utility systems, facilities, and related appurtenances and other programs; works with technical and engineering staff to monitor and maintain water quality in accordance with State requirements; coordinates assigned activities with other City departments and outside agencies for services such as meter reading and repair; provides complex and responsible support to the Public Works Director and others in areas of expertise; and performs related work as required.

Incumbents serves as the Division Manager to the City’s water distribution system. Responsibilities include planning, organizing, supervising, reviewing, and evaluating the work of water quality, maintenance, and operations staff either directly or through lead workers. Incumbents are expected to independently perform the full range of water quality, maintenance and operations duties. Performance of the work requires the use of considerable independence, initiative and discretion within established guidelines. This classification is distinguished from the water worker series in that it has direct supervisory responsibilities.
