THE POSITION

The Street Maintenance Worker will work in the Street Division within the Public Works Department, performing semi-skilled and skilled labor in the construction, maintenance, repair and related service activities related to streets, sidewalk, storm drain, sign, and traffic marking; and to operate construction equipment as required. Experience and skills related to Streets or Parks is desirable. Experience operating the following equipment is also desirable: backhoe, skid steer and cole planer, dump truck, and compaction/rollers.

The normal work schedule for this temporary position will be three, nine-hour days (27 hours) per week, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Department of Public Works is seeking to fill two (2) Security Officer positions.  These positions are responsible for performing work focused around security services at City Hall and providing a safe and orderly environment for staff and the public.  Shift rotation will be required every 6 months and will be based staff bids or the need of the department.

 

Duties include, but are not limited to, providing service to customers, monitoring closed circuit video and access control systems in Security Operation Center (SOC); escorting contractors to perform maintenance on security equipment; monitoring and/or inspecting vehicles at the garage entrance; issuing access badges to employees, interns or contractors for City Hall and other off-site locations. This position will also provide security coverage for various city meetings, public or private events, commissions and hearings in addition to coordinating with Police and Fire during emergency operations, medical calls or other related calls of service pertaining to the City Hall campus.

 

Current shifts for these positions are Monday through Friday, day and swing shifts, however, the position may at times provide coverage for meetings or events on weekends or special projects on the weekend that could fall on a City of San Jose recognized holiday.

 

These positions have a uniform requirement including a jacket & safety shoes. This classification receives an annual uniform allowance every year through the MEF bargaining unit Memorandum of Agreement. While on duty, incumbents of this position will be required to wear the approved uniform for this classification.

ABOUT THE POSITION

 

City of Gilroy is currently recruiting for five (5) full-time Maintenance Worker I positions.  The current vacancies may be assigned to any of the sections (Water, Streets/Waste Water/Trees or Parks and Landscape) within the Public Works Department, Operations Division as needed or with future vacancies.

 

The Water section personnel are responsible for planning and maintaining City wells, and the distribution system that provides safe drinking water to the City. The Water section is also responsible for the booster pumps, the reservoirs, maintenance and the monthly reading of all water meters. The Water section is responsible for meeting California State requirements for a Backflow Program within the City of Gilroy.

 

The Parks/Landscape section personnel are responsible for planning and developing new parks, and landscaping within those parks. Parks/Landscape Section is responsible for maintaining landscaped areas, such as median islands in the downtown public right of way and throughout the City. Parks/Landscape maintains a water conservation program and provides a weed abatement program around sound walls and around City owned facilities. Parks/Landscape maintains equipment throughout the park system and City facilities.

 

The Streets/Waste Water/Trees section personnel are responsible for: maintaining and repairing the City's improved and unimproved streets, curbs and gutters, bikeways, public parking lots and parking lots at City facilities. Streets/Waste Water/Trees also cleans and maintains the storm drains throughout the City. Streets/Waste Water/Trees provides the City with 24-hour emergency tree response, neighborhood tree clearance pruning, removal and replacement of dead and unsound trees, planting trees in new subdivisions, as well as processing permits for citizens who want to plant, prune or remove a City tree.

 

The goal for the Public Works Department is to actively maintain city streets, wastewater and water systems, and the city’s parks and landscaped areas in a clean, functional, aesthetic, and safe condition for the use and enjoyment of the residents of Gilroy.

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

Under direct supervision of the Senior Maintenance Worker, perform work in one of the three following sections as assigned:  Parks and Landscape, Water, Streets/Waste Water/Trees. Employees in this job classification may rotate/transfer between the sections noted above as determined by the City and will be required to fully meet the job requirements, including the obtaining of certifications, when assigned to a specific section for an extended period of time.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

 

Water Section:

1. Perform general maintenance work on the water system, as well as repairs and replacement of water mains, water services, fire hydrants and water meters.
2. Perform building maintenance on water system facilities.
3. Take water quality samples per State of California regulations.
4. Read water meters.
5. May assist with backflow tests on City-owned backflow assemblies.
6. May assist with cross-connection surveys on City and private premises.

Parks and Landscape Section:

 

1. Perform landscape and ground maintenance around public buildings, recreation facilities, rights-of-way, and open areas.
2. Perform irrigation maintenance and repairs as necessary.
3. Remove garbage and litter from assigned facilities.
4. Clean and maintain park buildings and restrooms.
5. Assist in park development when required.
6. Perform or coordinate necessary plumbing, carpentry, painting, and related building maintenance and vandalism repair as assigned.
7. Work closely with the Recreation Division, other City departments, allied agencies, and the public to coordinate maintenance schedules with the use of assigned facilities.
8. Perform work in the support of the Recreation Division such as reservations, ball field preparation and clean-up, and special event preparation and clean up.
9. Take appropriate action, such as notifying a supervisor or appropriate authorities, when laws, regulations, and policies pertaining to public use of the parks and municipal facilities are not being followed.
10. May be assigned to work in different facilities throughout the City.
11. May coordinate requisition, procurement, and storage of janitorial supplies.
12. May perform support services during major functions that occur in City facilities.

Streets/Waste Water/Trees Section:

1. Perform general maintenance and repair work involved in streets, sewers, trees, and storm drains.
2. May assist in building maintenance as assigned.

All Sections:

1. Operate and provide daily maintenance on equipment, vehicles, and hand and power tools as assigned.
2. Participate in related training programs.
3. Prepare and keep accurate records and reports.
4. Investigate service requests and complaints.
5. Conduct inspections.
6. Oversee the work of part-time and seasonal employees, volunteers, and others (such as Social Service and Department of Correction programs or individuals) as assigned.
7. Perform disaster relief work as required.
8. Perform related work as necessary and required.
    

QUALIFICATIONS

 

• Minimum twelfth (12th) grade education or G.E.D.
• One (1) year of construction, maintenance, or landscape experience. Prior work for a public agency or other similar service industry preferred, but not required.
• Per the AFSCME MOU, due to stand-by and call out duties, employee assigned to the Water and Streets/Wastewater/Trees Section must reside within sixty (60) minutes normal driving time of the City Corporation Yard prior to the completion of one year of work. Normal driving time is the most direct route, at the speed limit. Residency within the sixty (60) minute response must be maintained during the course of employment.
• May be subject to scheduled 7 day paid standby duty on a rotating basis.
• Subject to recall on a scheduled and/or emergency basis.
• Possess, at time of employment, and maintain during employment a valid California Class C Driver License and a safe driving record necessary to operate assigned vehicle(s).
• Possess and maintain a valid California Class A Driver License within 12 months of hire/transfer. May be required to obtain endorsements. Must participate in the Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol Testing program, which includes submission to random drug and alcohol testing at such time the employee possesses a commercial license permit or a commercial license. 
• When assigned to the Water Section, will be required to obtain a State of California Grade I Water Distribution Certification within twelve months of hire or transfer.
• When assigned to the Parks and Landscape Section, will be required to obtain a Qualified Applicators Certificate with any one Category within twelve months of hire or transfer.
• When assigned to the Street/Waste Water/Trees Section, must demonstrate proficiency in at least one of the following pieces of equipment within twelve months of hire or transfer:  backhoe, paint truck, or Vactor. A training certificate may be required.
• Pass a post-offer medical examination, which includes a drug test.
• Pass a Department of Justice record check and background check for employment.
• Prefer non-tobacco user.

ABOUT THE POSITION
 
City of Gilroy is recruiting for one (1) ongoing and two (2) substitute part-time Early Childhood Recreation (ECR) Assistant Instructors. The goal of the Recreation Department is to provide early childhood recreational opportunities to foster social development, healthy lifestyles, build confidence and instill problem solving, listening and communications skills in participating children in a safe, stimulating and nurturing environment.
 
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
 
Under direct supervision of an Early Childhood Recreation Instructor and indirect supervision of a Recreation Supervisor and/or a Recreation Coordinator, assist in teaching a developmental program for preschool children 30 months to 6 years of age.  This position provides supervision of appropriate activities and events during program hours.  This position is a substitute position.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

1. Observes program areas to ensure cleanliness and safe, proper use of facilities and equipment.
2. Supervises children in the classroom and on the playground.
3. Assists in instructing curriculum for classroom activities (music and movement, arts and crafts, early math, science, language and reading skills, gross and fine motor skills development, size, color, and shape discrimination, etc.).
4. Instructs classroom activities in the absence of the Early Childhood Recreation Instructor.
5. Prepares the physical environment and materials for daily activities.
6. Provides ordered arrangement, appearance and décor of the learning environment.
7. Assists in ordering and maintaining supplies and maintaining equipment inventory.
8. Researches new concepts, ideas, and resources for inclusion in the curriculum.
9. Shares ideas, materials, time and resources with other members of the staff with a commitment to the concept of team spirit.
10. Responsible for parent contacts, informs parents of philosophy and program curriculum and child's development.
11. Participate in related training programs and staff meetings.
12. Perform a variety of clerical and administrative support functions for assigned program area as needed.
13. Assist in training other recreation personnel.

2. Any related experience helpful. GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under direct supervision of a Recreation Coordinator or Recreation Specialist and indirect supervision of a Recreation Supervisor, assist, plan, organize, and lead the physical, recreational, and social activities of assigned recreation programs.  Program areas include, but are not limited to, Adaptive (Special Needs), Adult and/or Youth sports, After School Program, Cultural Arts, Facility Attendant, Senior Center, Special Events, Summer Camps, and Youth Center/Youth Services.  This position may be a year round part-time position or seasonal position, depending on the recreation program. As related experience is gained as noted in the job qualifications and requirements, and with the recommendation in the employee's performance evaluation, Recreation Leaders can advance from Recreation Leader I to Recreation Leader II or from Recreation Leader II to Recreation Leader III.  As the employee advances through the job series the employee will take on more responsibility and more challenging work assignments.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

The following are examples of work that apply to all Recreation Leaders though some work may vary based on assigned program areas.
 

1. Assist and/or lead in organizing a wide variety of programs and activities to meet the recreational, educational, physical, and social needs in the community. Expect to work with multiple age groups such as children, teenagers, adults and seniors.

 

REQUIREMENTS, TRAINING EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Recreation Leaders may be placed at any one of the following levels based the following requirements and qualifications:
 
Recreation Leader II:

1. Sixteen (16) years of age or older at date of hire.
2. One year of paid experience working in a recreation program-type setting.
3. Experience supervising children, teens, adults, and/or seniors preferred.
4. Experience communicating with parents and the general public preferred.

 
Recreation Leader III:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Two years of paid experience working in a recreation program-type setting.
3. Must have experience supervising children, teens, adults, and/or seniors.
4. Must have experience communicating with parents and the general public.

 
Recreation Leaders (All Levels):

1. Valid tuberculosis (TB) Certificate.
2. May be required to possess and maintain a valid California Driver License along with a safe driving record necessary to operate assigned vehicle(s).
3. Possess (within 12 months of hire) and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR/AED certification.
4. Pass a pre-employment drug test.
5. Pass an employment background check including a Department of Justice criminal record check.
