Under supervision of the Grounds Supervisor and under direction of the Maintenance II, Parks and Grounds lead person, incumbents in this classification work individually or as a member of a parks and grounds crew in the upkeep of City parks, medians, and satellite facilities including bus, equipment, and flora; perform related work as required.

MAINTENANCE TRAINEE – PARKS & GROUNDS

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

Maintenance Trainee – Is an entry-level trainee position. Incumbents learn to perform the full scope of duties of the Maintenance I class. This class is alternately staffed with Maintenance I and incumbents may advance to the higher-level class after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher-level class.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Inspect, clean, repair, and maintain City parks and trail system to ensure facilities are safe and usable; inspect, clean, and stock park restrooms; remove refuse from City garbage cans.
• Plant, cultivate, and provide upkeep for City landscapes and parks; mow lawns, replant vegetation, and prune trees, shrubs, and ground covers.
• Prepare and apply pesticides, growth regulators, and fertilizers; identify and appropriately label the containers when using these materials; document materials used.

• Attend technical and safety on-the-job training sessions; carry out what is learned in the classroom/tailgate training on the job; fill out accident reports if involved in an accident.

MAINTENANCE I – PARKS & GROUNDS

The Maintenance I classification represents the journey-level within the Parks and Grounds Maintenance class series. Individuals within this class exhibit comprehensive proficiency in independently carrying out a spectrum of Parks & Grounds maintenance responsibilities. This entails not only performing tasks such as inspecting, cleaning, repairing, and maintaining City parks, landscape areas, and trail systems, but also making informed decisions regarding safety and usability. The Maintenance I role stands apart from Maintenance II, the lead-level in the series, as Maintenance II holds responsibility for overseeing the tasks performed by a crew engaged in parks and grounds maintenance.

Join us as a Community Service Officer (CSO) in the Berkeley Police Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to perform a wide range of duties, both in office support and in the field, to support various police functions. Other requirements include:

• Must successfully complete a psychiatric evaluation and a Police Department background investigation and medical evaluation.
• Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
• Must be willing to work evening, graveyard, weekend, and holiday shifts for the 24 hour/day operational schedule.

This is an unrepresented mid-management classification that oversees, directs, and participates in the day-to-day operations of an assigned Human Resources division, including planning, and budgeting, coordinating with other divisions and departments, and managing and accomplishing the complex and varied functions of the department. Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in human resources, business, or public administration or closely related field.

Under direction, provides clerical and administrative support to a department head, division head, section supervisor and/or supervisory and professional staff within a variety of City departments. This is the lead-level class in the Administrative Assistant series. Under general supervision, may provide lead direction and training to a small group of Administrative Assistants and Office Specialists; provides difficult and/or specialized office support to a designated department head, division head, section supervisor and/or supervisory and professional staff within a variety of City departments; and performs related work as assigned. This position is distinguished from the Administrative Assistant II class by the high degree of independence, level of responsibility, the greater complexity of assignments received, and its possible supervisory nature. Incumbents exercise a high degree of responsibility for administrative research and analysis and provide recommendations to department heads, section supervisors and/or supervisory and professional staff within a variety of City departments.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• May provide lead direction, training and review of work of those in the Office Specialist and Administrative Assistant series.

The Position 

As a member of the Human Resources Department’s management team, the Human Resources Analyst I/II position will perform a wide range of responsibilities to support the Labor and Employee Relations function.

The Ideal Candidate

It will be important for the Human Resources Analyst I/II to possess a passion for work in the public sector coupled with an ability to think critically, and communicate effectively while maintaining exceptional interpersonal relationships with team members and customers. The successful candidate will be proficient in working with managers across the City to provide counsel and assistance regarding a wide range of human resources issues to support the labor and employee relations function. Desirable Qualifications: Thorough understanding of labor and employee relations in the public sector; Human Resources certifications in SHRM, IPMA and/or CALPELRA; and experience with Human Resources systems.

• Work collaboratively with the Human Resources Manager to provide counsel and assistance regarding employee relations and organizational development matters, including employee investigations, disciplinary corrective actions, and grievance resolution.

• Support the work of the citywide organizational development initiatives to develop Fremont’s future leaders.
• Support Citywide employee engagement and training initiatives.
• Assist in the implementation and management of the citywide employee performance management system.
• Support Labor Relations and Benefits efforts by researching, gathering, analyzing and summarizing data. Perform benefits research, studies and project management.
• Research and analyze emerging trends in Human Resources and develop recommendations to improve our programs and address challenges.
• Coordinate requests for proposals, summarize proposals and make recommendations for the acquisition of services.
• Improve Human Resources efficiencies by implementing industry best practices.
• Support the administration of the leave of absence program and ensure CFRA/FMLA/FEHA/ADA compliance

Under the supervision of the Building/Code Compliance Coordinator and the Chief Building Official/Senior Plans Examiner, the Building/Code Compliance Inspector performs work in the areas of building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, energy, green, zoning, and residential fire protection inspections; various aspects of code enforcement; and other duties as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey-level, professional class that is expected to read plans, make code interpretations, have comprehensive knowledge of construction materials and techniques, and be able to perform field inspections (both Building and Code Enforcement) on their own.

This position is distinguished from the next higher class of Senior Building/Code Compliance Inspector by the latter providing training, technical advice, and lead assistance to incumbent inspectors. The Building/Code Compliance Inspector is further distinguished from the lower level of Building/Code Compliance Trainee in that the latter is the entry-level class, and is in training, learning the full scope of the assigned duties and responsibilities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Inspecting residential, commercial, and industrial occupancies for compliance with building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, energy, green, zoning and fire protection codes and standards.
• Recommending solutions or corrective actions to problems and taking follow up actions to ensure discrepancies are corrected.
• Performing various functions related to code enforcement (e.g., inspections, noticing, follow-up with owners, and research).
• Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, to a wide variety of audiences.
• Writing reports and preparing correspondence pertaining to assigned duties.
• Keeping pertinent records.
• Utilizing personal computers to access the permitting system, GIS (geographic information system, various other software applications, and perform word processing functions.
• Consulting with architects, engineers, contractors, business owners, and homeowners.
• Using appropriate safety practices.
• Performing other duties as assigned.
