The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Assistant Fire Inspector in the Fire Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to work in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Division and help administer special projects aimed at assisting residents with defensible space, hazardous vegetation cleanup, and preparing for wildfire. This position also plays an important role in grant-funded projects, program management, and outreach events as well as fulfilling technical work required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:
Equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of experience in fire, building, or code enforcement inspections in a paid professional, internship, or volunteer capacity. Municipal experience desirable.

Other desirable qualifications include: Completion of California State Fire Marshal's Fire Prevention 1A, 1B, and 1C courses; Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D; or International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I; Associate’s degree in fire science, emergency management, fire protection engineering, environmental science, ecosystem management, public policy, public administration, or related field.

About the Position

The Public Works Maintenance Worker I is an entry-level classification in the Maintenance Worker series. THE DEPARTMENT:

THE POSITION:

There is one vacant position, and the successful applicant will be offered one of the following positions based on qualifications and experience: Traffic Engineer or Senior Civil Engineer. The Senior Civil Engineer position will have an emphasis in the traffic division. The position will perform the following essential job duties:

• Manage City-wide traffic system.
• Oversee City's traffic signal system and maintenance contracts and directs necessary changes to modify the system.
• Issue work orders to make changes to existing roadway system to improve safety and capacity.
• Perform traffic signal timing and operation.
• Conduct transportation modeling to assess the City's future traffic conditions and subsequently assist to develop policies to evaluate proposed developments.
• Participate in Traffic Coordinating Committee to address complaints, requests for changes, and neighborhood calming techniques and studies.
• Analyze transportation impact studies, recommends mitigation, and recommends project conditions of approval.
• Meet with other department staff to address traffic engineering issues.
• Develop project designs, applies for grant funding, obtains permits from Caltrans and other agencies. Coordinate with other public and private agencies.
• Conduct transportation planning referrals and review.
• Perform accident reconstruction to determine primary collision factor. Determines changes needed in roadway.
• Prepare technical reports for use by City attorneys and advise attorneys on traffic engineering matters.
• Prepare reports and technical applications for grants from Federal and State sources. Make presentations to selection committees.
• Perform complex and detailed analysis of roadway network using sophisticated computer software programs and methodologies.
• Perform related duties as required.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:

The successful candidate will possess a blend of technical expertise in traffic engineering principles and have strong organizational, planning, communication, and leadership skills that allow them to effectively manage different aspects of the department’s Traffic Division. They will also have a strong sense of customer service, tactfulness, and the ability to help find solutions to complex service issues for the public. They will use their communication skills and strengths to advocate for various modes of transportation including bicycle, pedestrian, transit and vehicular. They will be flexible, with the ability to adjust priorities at short notice and respond to emergencies. They will be able to think analytically but also be very decisive when needed.

Prior supervisory and/or municipal engineering experience is desired. The successful candidate will lead by example to foster a positive, creative, and productive work environment for all staff. The ideal candidate will use their interpersonal skills and technical engineering expertise to motivate the team to meet the goals and objectives of the department and City. • A master’s degree may substitute for 1 year of post degree engineering experience.

The Engineering Group Manager – Facilities will oversee a diverse and talented team responsible for managing the planning, design, and construction of capital projects at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA). This individual will lead the delivery of high-impact projects ranging from transit infrastructure upgrades to the improvement and rehabilitation of maintenance yards and other critical facilities. The role includes overseeing staff, consultants, and stakeholders in the successful execution of these projects, while also ensuring compliance with VTA’s overall objectives and community needs.
