THE POSITION:

The City of San Rafael is hiring for the temporary position of Parks Maintenance Worker in the Public Works Department.  This is a full-time temporary position working 37.5 hours per week under general supervision.  Maximum hours worked per fiscal year not to exceed 1,000 hours.  Duties include, but are not limited to: cleaning restrooms, picking up and disposing of debris; mowing and edging turf; pruning shrubs and groundcovers, cleaning asphalt surfaces; general landscaping maintenance; and minor building maintenance and repair.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to operate mowers, edgers, backpack blower, small athletic tractor and weed eaters; work flexible time; follow written and oral assignments with a minimum of supervision and work with moderate public contact.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:                       

Graduation from high school or equivalent.  Must have excellent reading and communication skills; prior experience in the operation of power-driven equipment or previous maintenance experience is desirable but not required.  Must be capable of heavy manual labor, including the ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and be able to show proof of eligibility to work.  Must possess a valid California driver’s license.

Senior Civil Engineer

San Rafael Sanitation District

$119,760 - $145,560 per year (DOE/DOQ)

THE POSITION:

The San Rafael Sanitation District is seeking a full-time Senior Civil Engineer.  The incumbent in this position, plans, organizes, directs and oversees the Engineering services of the San Rafael Sanitation District and will provide administrative, professional and technical assistance to the District Manager and acts on behalf of the District Manager as assigned.   

Our mission is to responsibly collect and transport wastewater from our customers to Central Marin Sanitation Agency for treatment, utilizing cost effective, environmentally sound, and safe practices.  Our employees maintain 32 pump stations, 13 miles of force main, and 132 miles of sewer pipelines. 

This position performs the following essential job duties (This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive.  Duties performed would include San Rafael Sanitation District CIP projects.  Some incumbents may not perform all the duties listed while in other cases, related duties may be assigned):

• Plans, supervises and performs professional engineering work in the design and construction of public capital projects, specializing in sanitary sewers, force mains, pump stations and related facilities.
• Supervises the preparation of plans, project specifications, inspections, legal descriptions, surveys and other engineering work performed by staff members and consultants.
• Supervises and participates in the review of plans and the inspection of construction in progress for adherence to codes, acceptable engineering standards and related Sanitation District standards and policies.
• Supervises, trains, and evaluates assigned staff.
• Meets with public and private engineers, architects, contractors and owners to explain and discuss projects.
• Responds to inquiries or complaints from the public and provides technical information to outside agency staff, Board of Directors, and the public.
• Prepares comprehensive technical and staff reports in verbal and written form to the District Manager, and Sanitation District Board of Directors.
• Coordinates engineering activities and capital projects with other agencies.
• Reviews, approves and signs engineering drawings, plans and specifications and other documents as the responsible Professional Engineer.

• Ensures compliance with Public Contracts Code, Federal and State laws, local ordinances and regulations.
• Manages and develops the District’s mapping and Geographic Information System.
• Manages and develops the Districts Sanitary Sewer Management Plan.  Coordinates programs and strategies with Central Marin Sanitation Agency and other agencies.
• Supervises and manages the application of grants for District projects from Federal, State, and local funding sources.
• Prepares the bi-annual District Budget for review by the District Manager.
• Reviews and approves all District payments to consultants, contractors, and vendors.
• Calculates sewer connection fees.
• Provides administrative support to the District Manager.
• Administers District programs such as annexations, sewer main extensions, and “buy back agreements”
• Performs related duties as required.

To be eligible for this position, you must have knowledge of:

• Principles and practices of civil engineering, sanitary engineering and administration.
• Design, construction and operation of sanitary and public works facilities.
• Methods of preparing designs, plans, specifications, estimates, reports and recommendations.
• Sewer, pump stations, streets, storm drains, buildings, parks and other public works projects.
• Laws and codes related to civil engineering, environmental health and sanitary engineering.
• Principles of organization, administration, budget and supervision.
• Personal computers and related engineering software.

To be eligible for this position, you must have the ability to:

• Supervise engineering professionals and paraprofessionals.
• Perform design engineering.
• Prepare plans, drawings, specifications, diagrams, and make sketches.
• Deal with contractors, engineers, and their representatives.
• Use a PC and related engineering software.
• Make complex engineering calculations and prepare plans and specifications.
• Supervise the preparation of engineering records and prepare technical reports.
• Evaluate and resolve engineering problems.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Communicate effectively.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  (Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill and abilities).  A typical way to obtain these would be:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
• Six (6) years of increasingly responsible public works construction and maintenance experience.
• Registration as a Civil Engineer in the State of California
• Valid driver’s license.

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART), the Bay Area’s newest transit system, seeks an experienced Assistant Engineer to perform field and office engineering work in support of SMART's Train Control Systems. As Assistant Engineer for Rail Systems you will act as an assistant to the Manager of Train Control Systems by participating in the design, construction and implementation of a variety of systems engineering projects related to train control, grade crossing warning systems and networking. Performs a wide variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance duties in the installation, construction, repair and maintenance of City utilities and system operations, including the skilled operation of power-driven equipment. 

The City of American Canyon is seeking individuals who can perform an array of general clean-up and maintenance tasks in various City departments (Parks Maintenance is the current focus) and to provide assistance to regular employees engaged in skilled and semi-skilled duties. Duties will include but are not limited to field labor tasks as identified: shoveling/digging dirt, concrete, and asphalt; assisting with irrigation repairs, installations or adjustments; trimming and pruning trees and shrubs; and using a weed eater, lawn mower, blower and other light landscape equipment. Applicants must be able to walk up and down hill sides, push wheel barrows and equipment, and jackhammer asphalt and concrete. The individuals will work 24-27 hours per week and may include weekend work.  The positions are considered temporary/part-time and are limited to no more than 1,000 hours per fiscal year.

The City is currently seeking a Senior Electric Engineering Technician who will be responsible for performing a wide range of sub-professional engineering and administrative duties including: planning, engineering design, project review, budgeting and management, labor and material estimates and complex phases of construction cost estimating. The incumbent has lead responsibility in planning, design and review of special and major development projects and has responsibility for the development and implementation of design and construction standards.

A selected sample of duties includes: assists the Utilities Director in preparing and administrating departmental work plan; by use of computer aided drafting software (i.e. ACAD) and/or other related tools, prepares detailed plans for needed maintenance and/or replacement work. Plans include providing special instructions for the materials, location of poles, anchors, guys, conduit systems, vaults, service boxes, transformers, labor estimates and other necessary information required to complete the work; determines proper cable, wire sizes, and transformer sizes for given loads on the distribution system; coordinates layout for major subdivisions with other city and third party utilities, insuring that overall City interests are a priority when said coordinating is done; conducts field surveys of project sites to determine the existing and future locations of electric and other facilities and the impact of proposed changes; ability to analyzing engineering technical and statistical information, evaluating alternatives and making sound recommendations; determines the existence of easement and requirements for new easements. Where new easements are required, initiates the process to gain easements prior to construction; assists in the development and updating of material and construction standards; works with developers, consultants, contractors, property owners, and other utilities on construction activities and proposed additions and changes to the City's electric utility system.
