MAINTENANCE TRAINEE – PARKS & GROUNDS

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

Maintenance Trainee – Is an entry-level trainee position. Incumbents learn to perform the full scope of duties of the Maintenance I class. This class is alternately staffed with Maintenance I and incumbents may advance to the higher-level class after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher-level class.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Inspect, clean, repair, and maintain City parks and trail system to ensure facilities are safe and usable; inspect, clean, and stock park restrooms; remove refuse from City garbage cans.
• Plant, cultivate, and provide upkeep for City landscapes and parks; mow lawns, replant vegetation, and prune trees, shrubs, and ground covers.
• Prepare and apply pesticides, growth regulators, and fertilizers; identify and appropriately label the containers when using these materials; document materials used.

The Maintenance I classification represents the journey-level within the Parks and Grounds Maintenance class series. Individuals within this class exhibit comprehensive proficiency in independently carrying out a spectrum of Parks & Grounds maintenance responsibilities. This entails not only performing tasks such as inspecting, cleaning, repairing, and maintaining City parks, landscape areas, and trail systems, but also making informed decisions regarding safety and usability. The Maintenance I role stands apart from Maintenance II, the lead-level in the series, as Maintenance II holds responsibility for overseeing the tasks performed by a crew engaged in parks and grounds maintenance.

The City of Berkeley is seeking a temporary (not to exceed 6 months) Manager of Aging Services! In this role, you will oversee four major Aging Services program areas, including senior centers, nutrition, transportation, and case management, as well as supervision of the division’s management team. Duties include planning, analyzing, and evaluating programs/services division-wide.

The Manager will also oversee Division budgets ($6.1 million), oversee management of Division facilities, and ensure the development and implementation performance goals and objectives using the newly developed results-based accountability framework. This position has the opportunity to coordinate and facilitate strategic planning initiatives, including the City’s Age-Friendly Action Plan, and partner with internal Departments/programs and community organizations to provide services to the older adult community, and further strengthen community resilience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills and abilities for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in social science, public health, social work, business or public administration or a related field, and five (5) years of increasingly responsible professional experience involving program planning and administration, preferably in programs for aging populations or closely related social services or public health program, of which at least two (2) years included supervisory responsibility.

A Master's Degree in any of the above disciplines is desirable.

Other requirements: Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, maintenance of a valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record is required. Must attend evening and weekend meetings as required.

DEFINITION:

Under general supervision of the Community and Recreation Services Director, the Community Services Manager administers and manages the Youth and Family Services (YFS) and Homeless Programs of the Community and Recreation Services Department for the City of Union City. YFS services include support for youth violence intervention and prevention through mentoring, employment, outreach, case management, individual and family counseling, parent education, and crisis support. Homeless Programs provide direct case management services to unhoused individuals and families.

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

This is a single position management classification assigned overall management and coordination of service delivery for the Community Services including Youth & Family Services, Homelessness Programs and other community-based social services. The Community Services Manager is responsible for achieving defined fiscal and programmatic objectives including but not limited to identifying, preparing, and managing grant proposals, budget, and performance reports for federal, state, and local funding.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Manages and implements a delivery system of social services to youth, families and individuals in crises and the unhoused including but not limited to: at-risk youth, dependent children, homelessness support, sustenance and nutrition support, victims of child/adult abuse, domestic violence, and those experiencing mental health and substance abuse.

The Department

The Human Services Department (HSD) delivers and supports services by forging long-term community partnerships; engaging with and building the capacity of the community to do its own problem- solving; and leveraging financial and volunteer resources.  The Aging and Family Services Division (AFS) of HSD specifically supports older residents and their caregivers to live active, healthy lives in the Tri-City community.

The Position

As a member of the HSD assigned to the AFS, the Senior Program Coordinator will organize, coordinate, and implement community wellness programs for older adults. The Community Programs include health promotion activities such as health screenings, wellness classes, and educational activities. The position works within a team that includes volunteers, health promoters, nurses, social workers and mental health workers. The position facilitates community awareness and partnerships, with individuals and agencies, to promote an age-friendly environment.

THE POSITION: 

The City of Hayward is excited to announce its recruitment for the position of Mobile Mental Health Clinician. Under general direction, the Mobile Mental Health Clinician provides field and office based professional behavioral health counseling, psychoeducation, outreach and engagement, and case management services as part of the City’s Hayward Evaluation and Response Teams (HEART) Program improving public safety responses to people experiencing mental illness, substance use disorders and homelessness.

THE PROGRAM

The Hayward Evaluation and Response Teams (HEART) Program is a cross departmental program between the Hayward City Manager’s Office, Police, and Fire Departments and Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services developed to improve access to medical, mental health, and other support services.  The HEART program aims to achieve two main goals: 1) to reduce the need for police officers to intervene in calls for service involving people experiencing chronic mental illness, substance use disorders, and homelessness and 2) to reduce reliance on emergency services for individuals needing long-term case management and follow-up services.  HEART consists of three distinct response teams: the Mobile Integrated Health Unit (MIHU) made up of Hayward Fire Department Community Paramedics; the Hayward Mobile Evaluation Team (HMET) which pairs a specially trained Hayward Police Officer with an Alameda County behavioral health clinician; and the Case Management and Mental Health Linkages Team (LINK) consisting of Mobile Mental Health Clinicians and a Lead Program Assistant (Case Manager).

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

 As a member of the LINK team, the ideal candidate has experience providing short term crisis intervention, safety assessments, and other mental health services to adults, youth and children experiencing mental illness, substance use disorders and/or homelessness.  They have the ability to work primarily in the field and have the situational awareness to respond alongside emergency response teams. They are knowledgeable about local community resources and skilled at forming relationships quickly.  
  

Essential Duties

What you will do:

Provides direct casework, individual and group therapy; secures and evaluates medical or psychosocial data such as behavior patterns, use of coping skills and family relationships; analyzes factors which exert an adverse effect upon health issues, treatment and recovery which contribute to or are responsible for behavioral health issues and/or affect the potential for recovery and resiliency. 

Performs field work to proactively serve the unhoused population, persons with mental illness and others in crisis.
 
 Interprets the social aspects of physical or behavioral health issues to clients, relatives, other behavioral health and medical care staff and appropriate persons or agencies.
 
 Provides crisis intervention as needed; stabilizes clients in crisis including brief intervention in clinic; arranges for hospitalization and coordinates treatment elements.
 
Assists clients in understanding clinical health challenges and their reaction to them, accepting the need for treatment, building on strengths and working toward the solution of challenges and stresses the importance of engaging in treatment to increase social functioning, modifying unrealistic attitudes, and strengthening client's effort toward satisfactory adjustments.
 
Establishes and maintains effective relationships with contractors and community organizations and other governmental agencies regarding programs and services; participates in committees, meetings and conferences; provides guidance regarding appropriate social-psychological practices and services.

License & Certificates:  Possession of a valid professional mental health therapy license issued by the State of California, such as Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), Associate Social Worker License (ASW), Intern Marriage Family Therapist (IMFT) or Clinical Psychologist or a closely related field is highly desirable.

Possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver's License.

Distinguishing Characteristics: 

Under general supervision, the Recreation Aide assists in the proper use of a community recreational facility and assist Recreation Leaders in providing a variety of recreation programs. The Recreation Leader classification is distinguished from the Recreation Aide level in the complexity of duties assigned, independence of action taken, the amount of time spent performing the duties, the nature of the public contact made, and its training responsibilities of new staff. Under general supervision, the Neighborhood Preservation Inspector. ensures compliance with applicable sections of the State, Federal, and Municipal Codes, ordinances, and in relevant areas, such as property maintenance, abandoned vehicles, planning, zoning, signs, community nuisance, and related areas.  This is a classification in the Economic and Community Development Department.

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

The Neighborhood Preservation Inspector is the full journey-level classification.  This position requires experience in both Municipal and Zoning Codes and Regulations. Employees at this level are expected to work with property owners independently and to coordinate City resources to solve neighborhood issues.

The Urban Forestry Division of the City of Fremont has two paid internships available for immediate hiring.  Through a variety of tasks and duties, interns will gain well-rounded, first-hand work experience and observational knowledge in the fields of urban forestry management and municipal administration.

The Role

The role consists of assisting city staff in the preservation, maintenance, and sustainable growth of Fremont’s urban forest. Examples of division responsibilities include program administration, tree assessment, community outreach and education, grant management, data collection and analysis, contracts and vendor management, project management, as well as other related responsibilities.

Examples of duties that may be assigned to interns include processing data through the city’s GIS- based tree data management system, reviewing and processing permit applications, developing and supervising tree planting initiatives, conducting public outreach and education, providing technical expertise, completing field work and assessments, Urban Forestry Management Plan implementation, and other duties as assigned.

With assistance from city staff and resources, this role will be expected to achieve International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) arborist certification before the term ends.
