THE CITY

The City of American Canyon is seeking an entry level Maintenance Worker to perform a variety of maintenance and construction duties and operates public works/parks equipment.  Initial hire and assignment will be for the Park’s division.  Maintenance Worker I’s may advance to the Maintenance Worker II level with a salary range of $4,625-$5,620 per month, after a minimum of two years of successful service and upon the recommendation of the supervisor.

THE POSITION

Maintenance Worker I is an entry-level class position. Initially, under close supervision, incumbents learn basic maintenance, construction, and safety procedures. As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines and incumbents are expected to perform a broader scope of duties.

The ideal candidate will possess the ability to:

• Provide manual labor as directed, including digging holes, removing trees, raking, removing trash/litter/debris/graffiti, and planting trees and shrubs.
• Take daily pool readings and perform maintenance activities including cleaning injection systems and strainers, replacing chemical injection lines, and adjusting chemical dosages.
• Perform carpentry work to replace or repair wooden fences, picnic tables, benches, signs, and par course facilities.
• Plant, prune, and maintain plants and trees.
• Assist in the repair and maintenance of irrigation facilities including controllers, drip systems, pipes, and sprinkler heads.

Operate and maintain tractor, flail mower, aerator, and fertilizer spreader.

Performs semi-skilled, skilled, and administrative work in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and mechanical equipment operated by the City of San Dimas.  Responsible for preventive maintenance program, vehicle/equipment maintenance and coordination of efforts for records and fleet/inventory control management.  Manages the contracting and/or outsourcing of specific mechanical functions or operations.  Performs mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance on City of San Dimas equipment.

1. Develop preventative maintenance program for all City equipment.  Develop and manage outside contracts with vendors that perform mechanical work on City equipment.
2. Perform preventive maintenance and repairs according to manufacturer’s guidelines on a variety of vehicles and equipment.  City of San Dimas equipment inventory includes but is not limited to service trucks, heavy trucks, construction equipment, stationary and mobile power generation units and miscellaneous equipment. 
3. Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair all City vehicles and miscellaneous equipment.
4. Perform major repair and overhaul on tools and all types of gasoline and diesel engines, gear boxes, differentials, transmissions and hydraulic equipment.
5. Perform welding repairs and metal fabrication by using both arc, MIG (metal/inert-gas), TIG (tungsten/inert-gas), brazing, and oxyacetylene welding equipment and basic machine shop tools and equipment.
6. May be required to operate a variety of vehicles and equipment including backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, miscellaneous equipment and service trucks as needed to diagnose problems and check performance.
7. Complete and maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair activities; enter work order history, cost and parts inventory data into computerized preventative/predictive maintenance program. 
8. Coordinate purchasing and maintain inventory parts and supplies for vehicles and equipment; generate purchase orders and order new quantities and specific replacement parts as required.
9. Provide input and assist with monitoring expenses for the operating budget.
10. Participate in development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities.  
11. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area; follow safety rules and guidelines.
12. Respond to emergency callouts as needed.
13. Be proficient in Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word and Outlook.

The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. This position has continuous exposure to unpleasant elements such as dust, fumes, odors, and high noise levels, or outside weather conditions when required to perform field repairs. The noise level is frequently loud, being above 85 decibels with the operation of power tools and mechanized tools in the shop bays.

ABOUT THE CITY

THE POSITION

To perform a variety of skilled and semiskilled horticulture tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of parks, pools, recreation, and cemetery facilities and buildings

The purpose of this recruitment is to hire a temporary/part-time position.  Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications for the Park Maintenance Worker I position may be considered for employment as an Intern.  Work hours vary by assignment and may be required to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays.  Position typically works 25-30 hours per week seasonally, Spring to early Fall.  

Temporary/Part-Time employees work no more than 130 hours per month AND 960 hours per Fiscal Year. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performing general grounds cleaning, including emptying trash receptacles, mopping, sweeping, and raking City park and recreation sites as needed. Water, mow, cultivate, prune, weed, renovate, and fertilize grass, plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs. Operate power mowers, chain saws, rototillers, aerators, hedgers, spreaders, front-end loader, edgers, air compressors, and other equipment. Utilize proper safety precautions related to all performed work. Drive vehicles and equipment as required. Prepare and maintain athletic fields and related facilities, swimming pools, and cemetery/interment operations.  Regular and consistent attendance.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Install, maintain and replace playground equipment and fences; assemble tables, benches and bleachers. Works as a member of the City pest control crew spraying various fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other related chemicals in City park and recreation areas. Respond to inquiries from the general public. Install, maintain and repair irrigation systems. Assist in setting up community services and special events. Maintain, repair and replace plumbing systems and fixtures such as light switches, motors, wall receptacles, conduits, faucets, drinking fountains, water heaters, water closet, urinals, water regulators and pressure valves.  May assist in street maintenance, building maintenance, or other public works projects, as required. Work cooperatively with others. Meet all Standby Program requirements, take standby duty, work any shift including weekends and holidays. Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience:  Completion of one (1) year of experience in the care and maintenance of parks and recreation facilities.

Licenses:  Required upon hire, possession of a California Driver’s License.

The City of Rocklin is accepting applications for a Street Maintenance Worker to perform a wide variety of activities related to the construction, modification, maintenance, repair and operation of City streets, open spaces, right-of-way, creeks, and vegetation; provide maintenance support to the Streets Operations and Maintenance Division; and performs related work as required.

This is the journey-level class in the Street Maintenance series that performs the full range of duties required to ensure that the City’s public streets, sidewalks, storm drainage systems, open spaces, right-of-way, creeks, and vegetation provide the highest level of safety for public use. Incumbents are responsible for inspecting, and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner, and performing a wide variety of tasks in the construction and repair of City streets. This class is distinguished from the Senior Street Maintenance Worker in that the latter is responsible for technical and functional direction of lower-level streets operations and maintenance staff and is capable of performing the most complex duties assigned to the division.

THE DEPARTMENT:

The Parks and Recreation Department is the third largest department in the City and is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. The Parks and Recreation Department is composed of a Director and 22 full-time management positions. The department is comprised of the Recreation, Community Services, Parks, Facilities and Common Greens divisions.

The Parks Division is in charge of planning and maintaining the city’s parks, playgrounds, sports fields, and other landscaping. This position is scheduled for forty (40) hours per week, Monday-Thursday 6am-4:30pm during the summer. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Experience:        I/II - Some experience in the construction trades or road maintenance is desirable. Summary:
Under supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled building, facility, and pool maintenance, alteration, repair and limited construction work in the construction and development of park areas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Performs rough and finish carpentry; installs doors and jambs.
• From drawings, sketches, or oral instructions, alters, repairs and/or constructs improvements or repairs in concrete, masonry, or similar materials.
• Operates welding equipment to cut or join metal parts.
• Designs and fabricates minor parts from a variety of construction materials.
• Installs, repairs, maintains and adjusts plumbing fixtures.
• Performs electrical repairs; maintains indoor and outdoor light fixtures; installs new circuitry, fixtures, and sub-panels, including sport lighting controls.
• Evaluates performance, performs preventive maintenance, repairs and installs ventilation and heating/air conditioning systems.
• Inspects, repairs and maintains a variety of aquatic equipment including pool pumps, filters, heaters, boilers, chemical pumps and chemical feed lines.
• Installs, repairs or remodels play equipment.
• Operates trucks, tractors, and other special equipment, including but not limited to aerial lift to heights of sixty feet.

Examination:
Candidate selection will be based on competitive examinations. Test content will be related to the job. A driver license will be requested for identification and admission to the testing area. If there is more than one part to an examination, candidates must pass each part. Candidates with passing scores will be asked to compete in successive parts of the examination.

• Written Test/Practical Exercise:  A written test and a practical exercise may be used, in addition to the appraisal interview. 
• Appraisal Interview:  A job related appraisal interview will be conducted to evaluate and compare participating candidates’ knowledge, skills, and abilities in relation to those factors which job analysis has determined to be essential for successful performance of the job.
• After the Appraisal Interview, the top candidates will be invited to a staff interview.

          All applicants will receive a written response to their standing in the selection process.

THE PROCESS

THE POSITION

The Maintenance Worker I may be assigned in the Parks Division or the Streets Division within the Public Works Department, performing semi-skilled and skilled labor in the construction, maintenance, repair and similar service activities related to streets or parks maintenance programs.

Typical duties in the Parks Division may include: maintain turf, trees, shrubs, groundcover, top dressings, irrigation systems, playground equipment, park furnishings, restrooms, and sport field equipment; basic operation and maintenance procedures for various power turf equipment, including but not limited to mowers of various sizes, edger’s, blowers, chainsaws, and related equipment as required; perform the installation, maintenance and repair of various parks and grounds improvements, planting and trimming of trees/shrubs; understand fertilizer and herbicide products and application related to turf and ornamental plant care; and may perform other related duties as assigned.

Typical duties in the Streets Division may include: operate and maintain various street, storm drain, traffic marking equipment, including but not limited to concrete/asphalt saws, rollers, air compressors, line stripers, airless paint sprayers, jackhammers, pumps, traffic control equipment and related equipment as required; perform a variety of skilled tasks using power equipment and hand tools in the areas of asphalt and concrete maintenance, fabrication and installation of traffic signs and barricades, application of traffic markings and striping, traffic control and storm drain maintenance; perform the installation, maintenance and repair of street and traffic improvements, curb/gutter and sidewalk improvements and storm drains; place to proper grade asphalt, concrete, other aggregate products and traffic control posts/signs; may perform other related duties as assigned.

The normal work schedule will be a 9/80 work schedule (9-hour days Monday-Thursday, 8-hour Friday with every other Friday off) from 6:00 am-3:30 pm.
