Summary: 
Under general supervision, to organize and conduct specialized recreational programs for the community and to provide highly responsible and technical staff assistance in a specialized program area, in accordance with District policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assists and participates in the planning, organization, and supervision of specialized recreation programs for a community area or specialized group.
• Confers with community groups to evaluate and formalize program ideas; liaison between community groups and the District.
• Speaks to community groups to promote participation in scheduled activities and explain specialized program.
• Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports related to program.
• Assists in conducting training programs for District recreation staff in specialized recreation related area.
• Directs and monitors activities of seasonal contract staff.
• Travels to various sites to conduct programs, deliver equipment and supplies, or attend meetings.
• Coordinate the planning, registration, and conduct of special events offered by the Unit.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• May design and produce flyers or brochures.
• May attend and participate in Councils or Associations related to specialized area.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:
Completion of 60 units is desirable with 1,500 hours of group recreational activity leadership experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Ability:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals related to unit assignment, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports and letters, and create forms. Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral form, including presentations before diverse groups and teaching. Spanish speaking preferred.

Math Ability:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, petty cash or bank accounts, refunds or credits. Ability to determine costs associated with program and keep records.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates and Licenses:
California Driver’s License with ability to obtain a Commercial Class C designation within 6 months of employment. First Aid and CPR certificates within 6 months of employment. All positions working with children under 18 require finger print clearance.

Supervisory Responsibilities: 
Supervisory responsibility is limited to directing and monitoring the activities of seasonal contract staff. This position may participate in the interviewing and hiring of contract staff and is responsible for completion of documentation at completion of contract period.

Examination:
Candidate selection will be based on competitive examinations. Test content will be related to the job. A driver license will be requested for identification and admission to the testing area. If there is more than one part to an examination, candidates must pass each part. Candidates with passing scores will be asked to compete in successive parts of the examination.

• Written Test/Practical Exercise:  A written test and a practical exercise may be used, in addition to the appraisal interview. 
• Appraisal Interview:  A job related appraisal interview will be conducted to evaluate and compare participating candidates’ knowledge, skills, and abilities in relation to those factors which job analysis has determined to be essential for successful performance of the job.
• After the Appraisal Interview, the top candidates will be invited to a staff interview.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develops, conducts and participates in various athletic, craft, social, cultural and instructional activities of a community center or District program.
• Modifies and adapts activities specific to specialized programs or populations.
• Develops interest, enthusiasm, and fair play among participants.
• Teaches classes and leads group activities.
• Directs and supervises the use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Prepares facilities for group activities, including physical set-up and break-down of classrooms.
• Issues and collects recreation equipment and supplies.
• Supervises dances, special events, field trips and other group activities.
• Ensures safety of environment and equipment for participants. 

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Referees and umpires organized games and sports activities as Unit requires.
• Coordinates and participates in recreational program promotional activities and presentations to groups.
• Applies behavior modification and social modeling techniques as appropriate in specialized programs.
• May assist with transportation in specialized programs.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Completion of 30 units is desirable with five hundred (500) to one thousand (1000) hours of group recreational activity leadership experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience which has provided knowledge of principles and practices of public recreation and basic rules and regulations governing competitive group athletic games.

Language Ability: 
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports. Ability to effectively communicate to the general public in written and oral form, including teaching.

Math Ability:
Ability to add, subtract, multiple, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compile statistical information and track scores.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates and Licenses:
California Driver’s License; First Aid and CPR certificates within 6 months. Fingerprint clearance required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The City of Salinas Library and Community Services is seeking self-motivated, mature individuals to implement youth recreation programs.  The ideal candidate is familiar with our neighborhoods and community dynamics or has the knowledge or desire of working in a diverse environment and serving as a role model for youth. Weekends and holidays may be required depending on program and location. This position may be required to close facilities at night and may be utilized to staff other recreation programs in the City. 

NOTE: This is a non-benefited position.  Schedule and flexibility may vary based on the needs of the hiring authority.  Temporary employees may not exceed a maximum of 25 hours per week and 1000 hours in a fiscal year (fiscal year runs from July 1 – June 30).

DEFINITION: Plan, coordinate and direct an after school or recreational program at a designated school or park site.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:  Ability to: Plan, publicize, coordinate and evaluate quality recreational program activities; supervise paid and volunteer/part-time staff; communicate clearly and concisely, oral and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of individuals and groups; plan and supervise activities for tiny tot, elementary, youth, teens, seniors and at risk youth; prepare reports and evaluate recreation programs.  Bilingual speakers are encouraged to apply.  Applicant should have the ability to take direction from an on or off-site supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Business office working environment subject to sitting at a desk or standing at a counter for long periods of time, bending, crouching, or kneeling at files, pushing/pulling of file drawers and supplies, reaching in all directions and prolonged periods of time working at a computer terminal.  Outside and inside recreational environment subject to playing games and activities with all age groups

Training: Education and experience likely to demonstrate possession of necessary qualifications would be one to two years training and/or experience in recreation program implementation or a related field.  Computer literate.

License:  A valid California Class “C” Driver’s License.

Certificates: The ideal candidate will have a background in providing leadership and implementation of recreational activities/excursions with a variety of tiny tot, elementary, teenaged youth and/or seniors. All applicants are required to submit a First Aid and CPR certificate or obtain certification within 90 days of appointment.  For applicants 15 to 18 years of age, a current valid work permit or the ability to obtain a valid work permit before hire.
