Under general supervision of the Senior Automotive Equipment Specialist, typical duties of the Communications Installer include installing 2-way radios into a variety of vehicles, including but not limited to Police vehicles and motorcycles, Fire department apparatus and other city department vehicles.

Installations are to be industry accepted best practices including the selection of proper wire sizing based on electrical loading, equipment placement with emphasis on serviceability, proper wire routing, proper power distribution, antenna placement, and grounding/power return.

The Communications Installer will also be responsible for the installation of intercom systems, emergency/warning lighting, vehicle electronics, computer equipment and terminals, antennas, and custom installations of non-standard equipment. This equipment is commonly used in emergency vehicles and municipal equipment.

About the Communication Division

The Communications Division implements environmental-specific media, outreach, and marketing activities to support the health of our community and environment. The communication services division includes strategic communications planning, multi-cultural community engagement, media relations, social media, collateral development, and website management.The Environmental Service Department is recruiting for a Senior Public Information Representative within the department's Communications Division. This position plays a key role in the department's recycling and sustainability programs. This staff supports the Public Information Manager and supervises three staff members.

Aligning with ESD's mission, the Senior Public Information Representative helps develop and implement a range of communications strategies for projects and initiatives focused on enhancing the quality of life and environment for San José residents and businesses.

Under supervision of the Grounds Supervisor and under direction of the Maintenance II, Parks and Grounds lead person, incumbents in this classification work individually or as a member of a parks and grounds crew in the upkeep of City parks, medians, and satellite facilities including bus, equipment, and flora; perform related work as required.

MAINTENANCE TRAINEE – PARKS & GROUNDS

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

Maintenance Trainee – Is an entry-level trainee position. Incumbents learn to perform the full scope of duties of the Maintenance I class. This class is alternately staffed with Maintenance I and incumbents may advance to the higher-level class after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher-level class.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Inspect, clean, repair, and maintain City parks and trail system to ensure facilities are safe and usable; inspect, clean, and stock park restrooms; remove refuse from City garbage cans.
• Plant, cultivate, and provide upkeep for City landscapes and parks; mow lawns, replant vegetation, and prune trees, shrubs, and ground covers.
• Prepare and apply pesticides, growth regulators, and fertilizers; identify and appropriately label the containers when using these materials; document materials used.
• Paint, sandblast, or otherwise remove graffiti from public properties; paint interiors/exteriors.
• Attend technical and safety on-the-job training sessions; carry out what is learned in the classroom/tailgate training on the job; fill out accident reports if involved in an accident.
• Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools used in landscaping, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, concrete work, and welding activities.
• Operate and maintain various pieces of medium to heavy equipment including trucks, tractors, chippers, backhoes, skiploaders, mowers, sandblasters, and trailers.
• Inspect irrigation systems; repair and renovate the systems by rebuilding and/or installing timers, clocks, wires, pipes, joints, valves, and heads.
• Control weeds throughout the City.

The Maintenance I classification represents the journey-level within the Parks and Grounds Maintenance class series. Individuals within this class exhibit comprehensive proficiency in independently carrying out a spectrum of Parks & Grounds maintenance responsibilities. The Department: 
 The Assistant City Clerk’s Office/City Manager’s Office is recruiting to fill a Deputy City Clerk. The Assistant City Clerk’s Office is organized under the City Clerk’s Office.  The Office of the Assistant City Clerk processes the agendas for and attends all meetings of the Council and Authorities Concurrent and Stadium Authority meetings, maintains accurate and up-to-date records of the proceedings of those meetings and makes those records open for public inspection. The Office of the Assistant City Clerk processes and maintains copies of City contracts, ordinances, resolutions and other official documents.  The Position: 
 The Deputy City Clerk will report to the Assistant City Clerk and perform highly complex administrative and analytical work. This position will assist the Assistant City Clerk in the administration of the City Clerk's Office. The incumbent will assist in developing, implementing and coordinating projects, programs and procedures. This position is responsible for assisting with Public Record Act (PRA) requests and this position will also support projects and programs within the City Manager’s Office. Incumbents in this position will have considerable independence in making judgment related to their assignments and must handle situations with great sensitivity, tact and diplomacy. May supervise or act as lead worker to staff involved in management activities.  
 
As a member of the City's unclassified service, this is an "at-will" position. The incumbent serves at the discretion of the City Manager.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any education or experience equivalent to:

• An Associate of Arts degree in Public Administration, Business Administration or closely related field; and

DEFINITION

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry-level class for Water System Operator and Street Maintenance & Sewer Collection System Operator positions in both the Water and Street, Sewer & Downtown Divisions.  Employees hired in either of these positions may reasonably expect promotion to the Water System Operator or Street Maintenance & Sewer Collection System Operator classes upon completion of one year's satisfactory service, completion of probation, and for the Streets, Storm Drains and Sewer Divisions, obtaining a class B driver’s license, passing a CWEA Grade 1 test, and for the Water Division, passing a DHS Grade D-1 test.

Street, Sewer & Downtown Division

Essential Duties:

Works with the following crews: Sign and Paint Crew; Paving Crew; Pothole Crew; Service Repair Crew; Pump Station Maintenance and Repair Crew; Sweeper Pile Crew; Sewer Rodder Crew and Hydro Jet Crew. Assists in laying pipe and sewer lines; sweeps and cleans roadsides, gutters, curbs, culverts, catch basins and other drainage structures; removes debris and undergrowth; assists in setting forms and mixing and pouring concrete; assists in raking, smoothing and tamping repaired patches; assists in the maintenance of mechanical equipment; assists in the layout of traffic patterns on streets and in the operation of painting equipment; cleans mechanical equipment and basic tools used on the job. Assists in maneuvering and driving hydro-jet truck and other equipment associated with this operation. Assists in preventative maintenance and unblocking of sewers using mechanical and hydro-jetting.

Other Duties: Serves as flag person when working in traffic and works in confined spaces.

Water Division

Essential Duties:

Assists in laying pipe and water lines; assists in making taps and connections to mains; assists in the maintenance of mechanical equipment; cleans mechanical equipment and maintains basic tools used on the job.

Other Duties: Serve as flag person when working in traffic; read water meters and assist water service worker; work in confined spaces.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification.)     

Knowledge of: 

Uses and purposes of designated hand tools employed in basic laboring work, safety precautions and practices, basic math and sufficient English to follow instructions and learn to write work reports.

Ability to:

Learn safety practices necessary in working on public thoroughfares; learn geography of the city; read and interpret plans and city block book maps; take notes and instructions and complete them accordingly; learn to perform semi-skilled and skilled duties in the assigned division. 

Skills: 

Ability to safely and efficiently use air and hand tools, hydraulic tools, jackhammers, and power and automotive equipment in a training capacity.

License: 

Possession of a valid Class C driver's license issued by the DMV, and the ability to obtain a Class B driver's license upon the end of a one-year probationary period.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Street, Sewer & Downtown Division

Ability to perform heavy manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects for short distances weighing up to ninety (90) pounds, including manhole covers; perform the pulling, pushing, twisting and bending needed for rodding sewer; work outdoors in adverse weather; perform pick and shovel work in digging, widening and backfilling; assist in the cleaning of sewers which includes working in raw sewage.

Ability to stand and walk for considerable periods of time; twist the upper body; perform moderate amounts of crouching, stooping, and squatting. Ability to climb ladders and to climb into confined spaces; to work weekends and evenings as necessary, and to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Sufficient vision, hearing and stamina to perform the above job duties, and use of proper safety and hearing equipment when using noisy and dangerous equipment.

Water Division
