Under supervision of the Grounds Supervisor and under direction of the Maintenance II, Parks and Grounds lead person, incumbents in this classification work individually or as a member of a parks and grounds crew in the upkeep of City parks, medians, and satellite facilities including bus, equipment, and flora; perform related work as required.

MAINTENANCE TRAINEE – PARKS & GROUNDS

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

Maintenance Trainee – Is an entry-level trainee position. Incumbents learn to perform the full scope of duties of the Maintenance I class. This class is alternately staffed with Maintenance I and incumbents may advance to the higher-level class after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher-level class.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Inspect, clean, repair, and maintain City parks and trail system to ensure facilities are safe and usable; inspect, clean, and stock park restrooms; remove refuse from City garbage cans.
• Plant, cultivate, and provide upkeep for City landscapes and parks; mow lawns, replant vegetation, and prune trees, shrubs, and ground covers.
• Prepare and apply pesticides, growth regulators, and fertilizers; identify and appropriately label the containers when using these materials; document materials used.
• Paint, sandblast, or otherwise remove graffiti from public properties; paint interiors/exteriors.
• Attend technical and safety on-the-job training sessions; carry out what is learned in the classroom/tailgate training on the job; fill out accident reports if involved in an accident.
• Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools used in landscaping, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, concrete work, and welding activities.
• Operate and maintain various pieces of medium to heavy equipment including trucks, tractors, chippers, backhoes, skiploaders, mowers, sandblasters, and trailers.
• Inspect irrigation systems; repair and renovate the systems by rebuilding and/or installing timers, clocks, wires, pipes, joints, valves, and heads.
• Control weeds throughout the City.

The Maintenance I classification represents the journey-level within the Parks and Grounds Maintenance class series. Individuals within this class exhibit comprehensive proficiency in independently carrying out a spectrum of Parks & Grounds maintenance responsibilities. This entails not only performing tasks such as inspecting, cleaning, repairing, and maintaining City parks, landscape areas, and trail systems, but also making informed decisions regarding safety and usability. The Maintenance I role stands apart from Maintenance II, the lead-level in the series, as Maintenance II holds responsibility for overseeing the tasks performed by a crew engaged in parks and grounds maintenance.

Join us as a Community Service Officer (CSO) in the Berkeley Police Department! MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:
Equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) years of progressively responsible work experience, such as in-person, telephone, and written contacts indicating effective communication and customer service skills.

Previous volunteer or paid experience in law enforcement, emergency medical services, military service, probation, counseling or similar work requiring extensive public contact is highly desirable.

Other requirements include:

• Must successfully complete a psychiatric evaluation and a Police Department background investigation and medical evaluation.
• Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
• Must be willing to work evening, graveyard, weekend, and holiday shifts for the 24 hour/day operational schedule.

The City of Berkeley is seeking a temporary (not to exceed 6 months) Manager of Aging Services! In this role, you will oversee four major Aging Services program areas, including senior centers, nutrition, transportation, and case management, as well as supervision of the division’s management team. Duties include planning, analyzing, and evaluating programs/services division-wide.

The Manager will also oversee Division budgets ($6.1 million), oversee management of Division facilities, and ensure the development and implementation performance goals and objectives using the newly developed results-based accountability framework. Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in social science, public health, social work, business or public administration or a related field, and five (5) years of increasingly responsible professional experience involving program planning and administration, preferably in programs for aging populations or closely related social services or public health program, of which at least two (2) years included supervisory responsibility.

A Master's Degree in any of the above disciplines is desirable.

THE POSITION

The Water Resources Instrument Control Technician installs, operates, maintains, calibrates, and repairs computer hardware, process instrumentation, and telemetry equipment; de-bugs, modifies, and customizes software; modifies, maintains, and repairs all components of a programmable logic controller (PLC) based supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems/distributed control systems; and performs other duties as assigned.

DEFINITION:

Under general supervision of the Community and Recreation Services Director, the Community Services Manager administers and manages the Youth and Family Services (YFS) and Homeless Programs of the Community and Recreation Services Department for the City of Union City. YFS services include support for youth violence intervention and prevention through mentoring, employment, outreach, case management, individual and family counseling, parent education, and crisis support. Homeless Programs provide direct case management services to unhoused individuals and families.

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

This is a single position management classification assigned overall management and coordination of service delivery for the Community Services including Youth & Family Services, Homelessness Programs and other community-based social services. The Community Services Manager is responsible for achieving defined fiscal and programmatic objectives including but not limited to identifying, preparing, and managing grant proposals, budget, and performance reports for federal, state, and local funding.

• Manages and implements a delivery system of social services to youth, families and individuals in crises and the unhoused including but not limited to: at-risk youth, dependent children, homelessness support, sustenance and nutrition support, victims of child/adult abuse, domestic violence, and those experiencing mental health and substance abuse.
• Develops, integrates and oversees new social services programs into division/department administrative structure.
• Writes effective and persuasive grant proposals to secure funding to support City projects, programs and activities.

• Conducts presentations of programs and services provided to public, groups and other agencies.
• Serves as a departmental liaison with community social and mental health agencies, local law enforcement and criminal justice agencies, the faith community, community organizations and non-profit organizations, the school district, and others to adequately assess and represent community needs.
• Participates in department, city and community meetings as necessary.
• Conducts assessments to identify appropriate resources and provide referral services (secondary duty).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is completion of 60 college semester units. Previous volunteer or paid experience in a law enforcement support area is desirable.
 
Other requirements include:

• Must be free from any disqualifications for employment, including felony convictions.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
• Must be 21 years of age or older at time of appointment.
• Must be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose a criminal record.

POST will not authorize you to take the exam within 30 calendar days of having taken your last POST written exam. Please refer to the POST website for additional information.

Applicants may waive the written exam only by submitting a California POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) T-score of 48 points or higher. We will accept California POST T-scores from other agencies provided the test was taken no more than one year prior to the date of application. Applicants must submit, on agency letterhead, a letter that states that the individual has taken the California PELLETB written exam. Essential Duties

What you will do:  

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

Receives animals at the Shelter, isolating those showing signs of disease from healthy ones.
 
Vaccinates animals as they are received and administers medicine under instructions from a veterinarian; prepares identification collars and places on animals for accurate records.
 
Responds to questions from the public about animal breeds, temperament and adoptions;  advises public on appropriate choices for adoption and the proper care, treatment and control of animals.
 
Cleans, disinfects and maintains kennels and kennel area; performs dishwashing and laundering tasks.
 
Maintains a computerized log and record of all animals at shelter.
 
Reports any animals exhibiting symptoms of ill health or communicable disease.
 
Maintains inventories and supplies of food, medicines and controlled drugs, completing the necessary forms.

Assists in supervising volunteers.
 
Lifts and loads animals weighing up to seventy-five pounds.
