The City of Auburn is seeking a dedicated and proactive law enforcement professional to serve as the Chief of Police.

This position will lead our dedicated department and be instrumental in guiding our department through today’s and tomorrow’s challenges. The City has 85 full-time employees serving 14,000 residents. The APD is a team of 24 sworn officers and 11 professional staff providing patrol, investigations, 911 dispatch and other law enforcement services. The department has an annual operating budget of roughly $6 million.

What You Will Do

The Chief of Police is responsible for the planning, administration and operation of the APD under general administrative direction. Upon hire, the incumbent can expect to work closely with the City Manager, City Council, Placer County and community leaders to further learn, understand and address community public safety issues.

APD utilizes the Community-Oriented Policing philosophy and the Problem-Oriented Policing strategy to better serve the community. This includes serving with the Community Advisory Council and Community Action Team to connect with those who live, work and play in Auburn. The APD team works closely with the Placer County Probation and Health and Human Services departments, along with other groups within our community, to address those in the community experiencing homelessness.

The Position
In general, the Supervising Custodian is responsible for planning, assigning, monitoring, and evaluating the work of a group of custodians engaged in cleaning and general maintenance of County buildings, offices, institutions, and other facilities.
 
The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of recent custodial/janitorial experience in a large institution, including one year in a supervisory role. They should possess extensive technical knowledge of modern custodial equipment and cleaning methods, along with basic computer skills.

This ideal candidate also is an effective communicator who builds trust, motivates a cohesive team, and works alongside them to foster a results-driven attitude. They are a critical thinker who goes beyond routine tasks, maintains a meticulous approach to cleanliness, and ensures a professional environment. They take the initiative to address issues like dirty walls or door handles without being asked and inspire their team to do the same. Strong customer service skills and a warm, friendly demeanor are essential.
 
The current vacancy requires working an evening shift from 4:00 PM to 12:30 AM PST. There may be occasional weekend shifts as well.

Qualifications

License:

• Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California class C driver license or its equivalent.

THE DEPARTMENT & DIVISION
The Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for maintenance activities along approximately 92 miles of public right-of-way. It strives to improve, develop, and maintain public infrastructure essential to the safety, mobility, and quality of life for Orinda citizens. The DPW operates with an approximate annual operating budget of $5 million and has 17 staff members. The Department also administers a CIP budget of approximately $14 million. THE JOB
The Maintenance and Facilities Superintendent is responsible for ensuring that municipal buildings and public facilities are maintained to high standards, remaining safe and functional for employees and the public. The Superintendent will oversee a direct staff of two supervisors, up to eight indirect reports, and the Division’s annual budget. This role involves managing contract and project activities, including multi-year park and landscape maintenance contracts (currently with MCE corporation), multi-year janitorial services, facilities maintenance projects in the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and long-term maintenance and repair plans for city-owned buildings, streets, storm drain systems, parks, trees, and landscaping. The Superintendent will coordinate with City departments and external contractors; assess and prepare contract documents; participate in vendor selection; administer contracts and evaluate contractor performance; and review and approve billings. MAINTENANCE WORKER (Full time)

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Maintenance Worker I:  This is the entry level class in the maintenance worker series. Positions in this class normally perform a variety of unskilled and semi‑skilled maintenance tasks. Although trucks and other motorized equipment may be operated by a Maintenance Worker I, the equipment is used on a training basis or for tasks which are repetitious in nature. Under this training concept, positions assigned to the class of Maintenance Worker II which become vacant may reasonably be filled at the Maintenance Worker I level, with the understanding that reassignment to the Maintenance Worker II class may be expected following successful job performance and personal development.

Maintenance Worker II: This is the journey level in the maintenance worker series. All positions allocated to this class require that an incumbent be able to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative to fulfill assigned tasks. • Paint traffic directional markings, such as crosswalks and safety loading zones.
• Fabricate, install, repair and replace street signs.
• Operate heavy power‑driven equipment on a relief or training basis.
• Water, mow, weed, trim, renovate, and fertilize grass and other landscaped areas.
• Rake leaves, clean walks, fields, courts, and other facilities.
• Spade and otherwise prepare ground around plants and shrubs, including mixing and applying fertilizers.
• Plant, trim and/or remove trees, flowers, and shrubs. 
• Load trimmings on trucks for disposal.
• Pick up rubbish and litter materials and perform general grounds cleaning.
• Operate power mowers, edgers, sewer rodders, and other hand-operated and power tools in the performance of maintenance and repair activities.
• Drive vehicles as required and assist in routine care and upkeep of such vehicles.
• Assist in moving and installing park and recreational equipment.
• Install, maintain, and repair sewer system mains, sprinkler systems, pipes and facilities.
• Inspect, maintain, and repair parking meter devices.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS (position requirements at entry and throughout employment)

Any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job is qualifying. These employment standards would typically be achieved by possession of a high school diploma, or equivalent, and:

Maintenance Worker I: Possession of a valid California Class C driver license.  There is an employee weight limitation of 325 pounds to meet the legal limits for the safe use of certain equipment.

Maintenance Worker II: One year full-time performing the duties and activities expected of incumbents in the Maintenance Worker I classification. Possession of a valid California Class C driver license.  There is an employee weight limitation of 325 pounds to meet the legal limits for the safe use of certain equipment.
