Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Ferry Mechanic performs preventative, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, trouble-shooting, repair, and modifications on structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, piping and control systems found on ferry vessels and passenger terminals; performs related work as assigned. Responsibilities include record keeping and written verification of work accomplished.
 

Essential Responsibilities

 

• Working with computers on a daily basis for work scheduling, work order entry and work order reporting on the Districts electronic maintenance system in addition to notifications and communications.
• Conducts tests, analyses and measurements as directed to diagnose any unusual, erratic or malfunctioning occurrence in any shipboard or terminal system or component.
• Reports any unusual wear patterns, noise, pressure, temperature, or changes in voltage, current, cycles, resistance or any other indication of potential malfunction.
• References manufacturer schematics including blueprints, drawings and specifications to resolve maintenance issues.
• References parts catalogues and other sources to determine correct parts for specific applications.
• Performs inspections, preventive maintenance, repairs and overhauls as directed.
• Documents and records work performed and parts and materials used in the electronic maintenance system. 
• Reports all safety hazards and corrects unsafe situations immediately where possible.
• Immediately reports to supervisor any potential maintenance problem or condition which could cause a possible schedule delay.
• Maintains all work areas, special tools and equipment used in performing maintenance function, in a clean and orderly manner.
• Operate a forklift and other equipment/vehicles safely.
• Interacts on a regular basis with vessel operations personnel.
• Adheres to the safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable to job.
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with District employees, customers, vendors and all others contacted during the course of work using principles of excellent customer service. 
• Performs additional related duties as assigned.
• Regular and reliable attendance and performance required. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Education and/or Experience: 

• Completion of a four (4) year apprenticeship program, or approved equivalent as a heavy equipment or marine mechanic OR four (4) years of progressively responsible journey level full-time work experience performing to the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment which should include mechanical, electrical or welding repair, and at least one year in an industrial environment.
• Experience in corrective and preventative maintenance records using a computer-based maintenance management information system
• Experience in utilizing MS Windows based software for data entry, work order processing and materials requisitioning

 

Required License:  

• Must possess and maintain a current, valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record (Operates District Vehicles).
• No DUI’s or Reckless Driving codes within the last 7 years. 
• No more than two moving violations within the last 3 years.

 

Required Tools:

• Must have a full set of journey level hand tools to accomplish assigned work.

 

Hours:

• Shifts are scheduled based on seniority.
• The Ferry Maintenance Department operates 7 days per week, except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s day.
• Must be available to work all shifts; some overtime maybe required to handle emergencies.

 

Physical Requirement:  

Requires frequent and extensive physical activities such as: lifting and manipulating up to 50 lbs., bending, standing, stooping, kneeling, twisting, climbing, gripping, and other movements related to essential duties. Work around fumes, odors and dust in an occasionally high noise level environment with appropriate personal protective equipment. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner. Ability to wear a respirator and be fit tested. Must wear hearing protections when performing certain duties.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

Knowledge of:  

• Occupational health and safety rules and working practices applicable to this position. 
• Monitoring and inspection of propulsion and auxiliary machinery and other supporting systems (i.e., electrical, plumbing, electronics, hydraulics and HVAC in a commercial application.
• Maintenance and troubleshooting principles and best practices.

 

Skill in or Ability to:

• Understand, read and communicate (both orally and in writing) in Standard English.
• Interpreting and applying oral and written instructions in a consistent manner.
• Reading and reasoning skills to aid in troubleshooting equipment, understanding manufacture and engineering schematics and system drawings.
• Maintain corrective and preventative maintenance records using a computer-based maintenance management information system.
• Perform tasks with limited direction, and minimal supervision.
• Demonstrate ability to make logical decisions and sound judgments using common sense.

 

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Machine shop fabrication skills, familiar with lathe and mill use for the purpose of modification and fabrication of components.
• Welding, steel and aluminum, in shop setting and on-site.
• Electrical/electronic systems, motor controllers, power distribution, PLCs, and ability to troubleshoot the same.
• Off-highway and/or marine diesel engine operation and maintenance

THE OPPORTUNITY

The City of Pacifica is recruiting for a Public Works Superintendent within the Department of Public Works. Under direction of the Field Services Manager, the incumbents will be responsible for the field services of the Public Works Department. They will plan, organize, and direct the work of field personnel and perform related work as required. The incumbents will be assigned to oversee various subdivisions such as Streets, Streams, Storm Drains, Street Lighting, and Motor Pool programs.

 

THE DEPARTMENT

The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining and repairing the City’s infrastructure and wastewater treatment operations in an efficient and cost-effective manner while providing a high level of customer service and a safe work environment for city employees. The Department maintains parks, playing fields and medians and keeps streets and trails clean and well-maintained. The Department also coordinates the tree program, cleans beaches and coordinates the City Beautification program.

 

The Public Works Department is organized into three divisions including Wastewater Treatment Operations, Field Services and Engineering. The Wastewater Treatment Operations includes the operation of the Calera Creek water treatment plant and management of the collection system. Field Services oversees the maintenance of city streets, parks, trees, vehicles and public facilities. The Engineering Division manages public infrastructure projects, transportation planning and maintenance and repair of the City’s infrastructure. The Public Works Department is supported by 56 full-time staff and an annual operating budget of $4.6 million, along with a FY2023-2028 CIP appropriation of $ 8.6 million.

The Public Works Department is recruiting for an Operations & Maintenance Superintendent, who, under general direction from the Operations & Maintenance Manager, will oversee the operations and maintenance activities of the Facilities, Streets, Parks, and Vehicle Maintenance divisions. THE POSITION:

This position performs the following essential job duties (including but not limited to):

• Provide leadership, direction, and supervision to operations and maintenance staff, including assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and providing feedback and coaching.
• Foster a positive and productive work environment that encourages teamwork, collaboration, and professional growth.
• Develop and implement operational plans, policies, and procedures to ensure the efficient delivery of services.
• Coordinate with other City departments and external agencies to prioritize and schedule operations activities, including street maintenance, park maintenance/landscaping, facility upkeep/repair, fleet maintenance/replacement, and utility services.
• Oversee the planning and execution of maintenance activities for city infrastructure assets, including streets, sidewalks, parks, buildings, vehicles, and utilities.

• Monitor the condition of infrastructure assets and develop strategies for preventative maintenance and repairs.
• Maintain accurate records and inventory of city-owned infrastructure assets, including condition assessments, maintenance history, and replacement schedules.
• Develop and implement asset management strategies to optimize the lifecycle of infrastructure assets and maximize return on investment.
• Prepare reports and presentations on asset performance, budget projections, and recommendations for capital improvements.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, codes, and standards governing public works operations and maintenance activities.
• Coordinate safety program for department staff ensuring proper training and protocol.
• Obtain necessary permits, licenses, and approvals for maintenance projects and activities, and ensure timely renewal and compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Respond to inquiries, complaints, and requests for information from the public, elected officials, and regulatory agencies regarding operations and maintenance issues.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.  A typical way to obtain these would be:

• Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent, supplemented with training/education in supervisory principles.
• Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in streets maintenance and repair, parks maintenance, facilities maintenance and/or vehicle maintenance, including a minimum of two (2) years in a supervisory capacity.
• Training/experience in database management and/or experience using database systems is highly desirable.
• Ability to converse in Spanish is preferable
• Valid California Driver’s License

The California Children's Services (CCS) Medical Therapy Unit (MTU) is seeking a Full-Time Physical Therapist to provide a full range of physical therapy treatments/services to children with physical disabilities from birth to 21 years at special education sites. The children have chronic neuromuscular conditions, such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, traumatic brain injury and muscular dystrophy. The incumbents will be working on an interdisciplinary team with parents and other professionals. This is a unique opportunity to work in a friendly and cooperative team environment based at Medical Therapy Units in San Mateo and San Bruno.
 
The ideal candidate has graduated from an accredited physical therapy curriculum and has at least one year of experience working in pediatrics, with neurological and orthopedic conditions. The ideal candidate is licensed as a Physical Therapist by the Physical Therapy Board of California; has experience working with children of all ages; and is able to use an electronic medical record system. Physical therapists without pediatric experience and/or new graduates are encouraged to apply. Lastly, the ideal candidate would be interested in expanding their knowledge regarding therapy intervention and treatment for various diseases.
 
Physical Therapist I, CCS ($45.61 - $57.03 / Hourly) is the entry level class in this series. Under immediate supervision, incumbents perform the full range of general therapy treatments while developing and learning the skills to apply more advanced and/or specialized treatments. This class is flexibly staffed with Physical Therapist II, CCS and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher level class.
 
Physical Therapist II, CCS ($51.12 - $63.90/ Hourly) is the experienced journey level class in this series. Incumbents in this class perform the full range of general therapy treatments with a greater degree of independence and proficiency, additionally applying more specialized and advanced therapy treatments. Staff may also provide technical advice and training to less experienced staff.

Qualifications

Licensure/Certification:

• Eligibility for or licensure as a Physical Therapist by the Physical Therapy Board of California. Failure to obtain licensure within twelve months of employment may result in termination.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

Physical Therapist I, CCS: Graduation from an approved school of physical therapy.

Physical Therapist II, CCS: One year of supervised experience in pediatric physical therapy.

THE WATER QUALITY CONTROL PLANT:

The Water Quality Control Plant (WQCP) processes wastewater discharge for the cities of South San Francisco, San Bruno and the Town of Colma. The Water Quality Control Plant is a division of the Public Works Department staffed by 38 employees including: Plant Superintendent and Assistant Plant Superintendent of WQCP; Maintenance, Laboratory and Environment Compliance Supervisors; Senior Chemist; Chemist; Lead Plant Mechanics; Plant Mechanics; Lead Plant Operators; Plant Operators; Electricians; Senior Environmental Compliance Inspector; Environmental Compliance Inspectors, Utility Workers, and two Administrative Assistants.

The City of Brisbane will be sponsoring up to four summer internships this year.  Our internships are project-oriented and designed to give college students a good general overview of future employment opportunities and current issues in the Public Sector.  You will have the opportunity for exposure to various areas of City Administration during your internship and to network with fellow interns and participate in professional development activities in San Mateo County and/or Santa Clara County.

 

Projects for 2024 include:

 

• Communications – Assist with developing innovative and relevant content for posting on City-administered social media sites, research and work with departments in developing articles for publication on the City’s website and print newsletter, and assist with aspects of video production including storyboarding, camera work, and script-writing.

 

• IT – Have some familiarity with programs such as Windows, Active Directory, Office/Microsoft 365. Must be able to disassemble and reassemble a PC. Projects will consist of adding and editing AD and email accounts and sorting and organizing hardware components. Some daily tasks will include responding to help desk requests and making basic equipment repairs and replacements.

 

• Human Resources - Offering learning opportunities by following a full recruitment and onboarding process. Assist with website updating; maintaining employee records; the conversion of physical records/forms to electronic format; and conducting research and analysis on HR-related topics.

 

• Public Works (Utilities) – Provide support to the City's Public Works Department - Utilities Division with various engineering projects in drinking water distribution, water resources, sanitary sewer collection, and storm drainage. Primary assignment will focus on mapping and geolocating drinking water facilities to comply with new state regulatory compliance.  Secondary assignments may include field engineering support on construction of capital utility projects and assisting on various engineering reports and studies.

 

 

Applicants must be college students currently enrolled in and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university in a related field (e.g. public administration, public policy, business, planning, library science, environmental studies, engineering, sustainability). Undergraduate candidates must have a minimum of 48 semester units or equivalent completed.  Applicants should also be self-motivated, have excellent interpersonal skills, able to use Microsoft Office software, demonstrate good research ability and have the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. 

 

 

SALARY AND HOURS: The salary range for Interns is $20.00 per hour, 15-18 hours per week over a 12-week period.  The start date is flexible depending on the student’s availability.

DEFINITION

Under close supervision, performs a variety of routine, heavy labor and unskilled manual tasks; learns to perform the more skilled tasks of the assigned division; and operates motorized equipment in a training capacity.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry-level class for Water System Operator and Street Maintenance & Sewer Collection System Operator positions in both the Water and Street, Sewer & Downtown Divisions.  Employees hired in either of these positions may reasonably expect promotion to the Water System Operator or Street Maintenance & Sewer Collection System Operator classes upon completion of one year's satisfactory service, completion of probation, and for the Streets, Storm Drains and Sewer Divisions, obtaining a class B driver’s license, passing a CWEA Grade 1 test, and for the Water Division, passing a DHS Grade D-1 test.

Street, Sewer & Downtown Division

Essential Duties:

Works with the following crews: Sign and Paint Crew; Paving Crew; Pothole Crew; Service Repair Crew; Pump Station Maintenance and Repair Crew; Sweeper Pile Crew; Sewer Rodder Crew and Hydro Jet Crew. Assists in laying pipe and sewer lines; sweeps and cleans roadsides, gutters, curbs, culverts, catch basins and other drainage structures; removes debris and undergrowth; assists in setting forms and mixing and pouring concrete; assists in raking, smoothing and tamping repaired patches; assists in the maintenance of mechanical equipment; assists in the layout of traffic patterns on streets and in the operation of painting equipment; cleans mechanical equipment and basic tools used on the job. Assists in maneuvering and driving hydro-jet truck and other equipment associated with this operation. Assists in preventative maintenance and unblocking of sewers using mechanical and hydro-jetting.

Other Duties: Serves as flag person when working in traffic and works in confined spaces.

Water Division

Essential Duties:

Assists in laying pipe and water lines; assists in making taps and connections to mains; assists in the maintenance of mechanical equipment; cleans mechanical equipment and maintains basic tools used on the job.

Other Duties: Serve as flag person when working in traffic; read water meters and assist water service worker; work in confined spaces.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification.)     

 

Knowledge of: 

Uses and purposes of designated hand tools employed in basic laboring work, safety precautions and practices, basic math and sufficient English to follow instructions and learn to write work reports.

Ability to:

Learn safety practices necessary in working on public thoroughfares; learn geography of the city; read and interpret plans and city block book maps; take notes and instructions and complete them accordingly; learn to perform semi-skilled and skilled duties in the assigned division. 

Skills: 

Ability to safely and efficiently use air and hand tools, hydraulic tools, jackhammers, and power and automotive equipment in a training capacity.

License: 

Possession of a valid Class C driver's license issued by the DMV, and the ability to obtain a Class B driver's license upon the end of a one-year probationary period.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Street, Sewer & Downtown Division

Ability to perform heavy manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects for short distances weighing up to ninety (90) pounds, including manhole covers; perform the pulling, pushing, twisting and bending needed for rodding sewer; work outdoors in adverse weather; perform pick and shovel work in digging, widening and backfilling; assist in the cleaning of sewers which includes working in raw sewage.

 

Ability to stand and walk for considerable periods of time; twist the upper body; perform moderate amounts of crouching, stooping, and squatting. Ability to climb ladders and to climb into confined spaces; to work weekends and evenings as necessary, and to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Sufficient vision, hearing and stamina to perform the above job duties, and use of proper safety and hearing equipment when using noisy and dangerous equipment.

 

Water Division
