ABOUT THE POSITION

City of Gilroy is recruiting for a part-time Early Childhood Recreation (ECR) Assistant Instructor.  The goal of the Recreation Department is to provide early childhood recreational opportunities to foster social development, healthy lifestyles, build confidence and instill problem solving, listening and communications skills in participating children in a safe, stimulating and nurturing environment. This recruitment list may be used to hire substitutes and on-call Assistant Instructors in addition to the vacant position noted above. 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under direct supervision of an Early Childhood Recreation Instructor and indirect supervision of a Recreation Supervisor and/or a Recreation Coordinator, assist in teaching a developmental program for preschool children 30 months to 6 years of age.  This position provides supervision of appropriate activities and events during program hours.  This position may be a year round part-time, seasonal, or a substitute position.

IDEAL CANDIDATE: 

The “Ideal Candidate” will have one (1) year experience working with preschool-aged children and 6 units of Early Childhood classes. In addition, the ideal candidate will have experience assisting with the supervision of and assisting an instructor with classroom responsibilities, excellent customer service skills, good working relationships with fellow employees, ability to solve problems and conflicts, communicate with parents, and available to work both morning and afternoon program hours.

Responsibilities:

• Assist with set-up and clean-up of classroom and preparation of art projects 
• Greet children at the door upon their arrival and check children out as they leave
• Supervise children in the playground area to ensure safe, injury-free play
• Set up and/or put away playground activities
• Assist teacher in providing a safe, positive, and fun class conducive to learning

Position Summary
Under supervision of the Department Director, the Executive Assistant provides responsible, varied, and occasionally confidential office administrative assistance for the department head and associated supervisory and professional staff members.

This position works closely with the public providing technical information related to a wide variety of public works programs. The Executive Assistant assists in the preparation of contracts, amendments, and purchase orders; recordation of maps, lot line adjustments and other documents with the County; and assists in the public bid process on construction projects within the City.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

• High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent is required
• 3 years of responsible office administrative experience is required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This is primarily a sedentary office classification although standing and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, typewriter keyboard, or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 25 pounds.

COMPENSATION & Benefits:
The salary range for this position ranges from $70,385.12 up to $85,553.55 annually. Placement within the range will be DOE.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position represented by the Los Altos Municipal Employee Association.

The benefits package offered by the City includes:

• Retirement: CalPERS retirement plan for Classic members is 2% @ 60 with employee paying a contribution of 7%. PEPRA employees participate on a 2.0% @ 62 plan, with employee paying 6.75% of the retirement contribution. Benefits based on highest three years of compensation. The City does not participate in Social Security.
• Health Plans: Choice of HMO or PPO plans through CalPERS Health with most family plans covered at 100%. Employees who waive coverage may receive stipend of $350 per month.

About the Position:  The focus is on the development and implementation of a wide variety of capital improvement projects to increase public access and enjoyment of District lands.  The ideal candidate should be an organized, creative, energetic, self-starter with excellent oral and written communication skills, who enjoys working in an outdoor open space setting within a collaborative group dynamic. The Capital Project Manager III provides project presentations to the Board of Directors, Board Committees, and at public meetings. Work Environment:  This position will operate in the Engineering and Construction Department at the District’s office in Los Altos, California.  Capital Project Managers will often work in the field, and hike steep terrain and wildland areas with poison oak and wildlife. Fieldwork will require driving in remote areas on dirt roads, working in temperatures ranging from cold and blustery to hot and dry. Ideal candidates will be comfortable working in these types of field conditions, as well as in an office environment.

Education and Experience:  Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:  Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in civil or structural engineering, construction management, landscape architecture, or a related field, and:

Capital Project Manager III: five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in project management preferably in parks, open space, or related field.  A Master’s Degree in an Engineering, Architecture, or Geology discipline and/or a professional license (PE, PG, Landscape Architect, Architect) is highly desirable.

Responsibilities: Under direct supervision of the Recreation Fitness Specialist, is responsible for group instruction of Spinning fitness classes, utilizing Spinning or Indoor Cycling Certification training, and must possess a current CPR/AED certification. Ability to interact professionally and communicate effectively with participants and general public; adhere to class structural guidelines and time schedules; maintain patron safety in and around Campbell Community Center facilities; comply and enforce all City of Campbell and Campbell Recreation and Community Services Department policies and procedures.

• Professional certification(s) and experience.

• Valid California Driver’s license.

• Must have a Spinning certification through Mad Dogg Athletics, or nationally recognized indoor cycling certification.

Internship Opportunity:

The City of Los Altos Recreation and Community Services Department has ongoing internship opportunities for current college students who have completed their coursework and are looking to fulfill their undergraduate program internship requirements to obtain a B.S. or B.A degree in Recreation, similar field or meet other personal career enhancement goals. Interns will work closely with one or more members of the Recreation Management Team and will have an opportunity to develop skills and practical on-the-job experience in a dynamic and diverse public service environment while promoting an understanding of local municipal government. The Recreation staff will work with each student to develop a successful and rewarding experience.

Description of Duties:

Under general supervision and guidance, the intern will plan, develop, and implement selected programs, services or projects. Examples of projects include assisting in the planning and coordination of community events, recreation programming, park and facility projects, policy updates and implementation, marketing, public engagement, research and analysis. This includes working with City staff, department Commissions, the public and community partners.

The intern will also aide in the production and distribution of program fliers, brochures and promotional materials as well as assist with recruiting and training efforts. The intern will gain experience in the agency’s methods for the development of policies, procedures, marketing, customer service, registration, community engagement, collaborations, planning, assessing, and budgeting, analysis, feasibility studies and program evaluations. Example programming areas include special interest classes, tiny tots, teens, seniors, youth and adult sports, camps, aquatics, facility rentals and special events. Example park projects include the development of a new Community Center, dog park, and a variety of other facility improvements. The intern will participate in department, community, commission and staff meetings.

Special Project:

Per guidelines provided by a specific academic curriculum, the intern will complete a minimum of one special project during the internship experience. The supervisor and intern will jointly determine the project and scope. The project should be mutually beneficial to the student as well as the City of Los Altos Recreation and Community Services Department.

Optional Camp Experience (Winter/Spring and Summer only):

• Winter/Spring Interns may assist in the planning of camp programs including summer programming, paperwork, administrative tasks, budget preparation, and other related items.

• Summer Interns may be directly involved with the camp program by: assisting with planning for the summer, participate in administrative team meetings, leading activities, and assisting with day to day operations. They will also assist the Camp Coordinator with administrative aspects of camp; which may include assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating camp programs. For summer interns, camp duties may be in addition to the other duties listed above.

• Majoring in the field of Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, Public Administration, Kinesiology, or related field.
• Ability to follow written and verbal directions.
• Ability to instruct and lead individuals or groups in a variety of recreation programs and settings.
• Have knowledge of how to use basic computer programs and use of office machines, such as fax, copier, plotter, etc.
• Basic core knowledge of different techniques for a variety of recreation activities and programs.
• Ability to assist in the operation and control of recreation activities.
• Ability to use assessments to develop individual plans and document progress of participants.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, participants and the public.
• Ability to take initiative in asking questions, performing tasks in leadership and supervision of participants.
