THE POSITION
To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sidewalks, signs, water meters, sewers, storm drains, pump stations and tree maintenance. The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a current vacancy, as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Ideal Candidate for this position should have previous Road Maintenance experience; sidewalks, driveways, roads, curbs, and gutters, although not required. The Ideal Candidate will be able to follow directions, demonstrate good communication skills (orally and in writing), be flexible, arrive on time, have good attendance, a positive attitude, be able to work independently with limited supervision, and a willingness to take on and learn new skills. Possessing a Class B commercial Driver’s license is desired, though not required upon hire.
Maintenance Worker I:
This is the entry level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Positions in this class will usually perform most of the duties required of Maintenance Workers I and II; however, as compared to the Maintenance Worker II, is not expected to function at the same skill level and will usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment on matters related to work procedures and methods.
Maintenance Worker II:
This is the journey level in the Maintenance Worker series. This class differs from Maintenance Worker I in that incumbent perform more complex maintenance duties, including the requirement to meet all Standby Program requirements, take standby duty, to work any shift, weekends, and holidays. This incumbent Maintenance Worker II may also be expected to assist in the oversight and training of less experienced personnel
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Operate a variety of light and moderately heavy construction and maintenance equipment including such pieces as a loader, dump truck, water truck, rubber-tired and steel rollers, rubber-tired tractor with all attachments (except backhoe attachment), striping equipment, and trencher in order to perform a variety of routine construction and maintenance operations. Spread asphalt in patching and repairing streets. Use concrete cutting equipment; operate a jackhammer; pour and finish concrete; construct concrete forms and perform rough carpentry work. Paint and install traffic markings on streets, crosswalks, parking lots, and curbs; operate a striping truck; manufacture and install traffic signs and remove signs no longer required. Install and remove traffic control barricades and cones. Assist in a variety of tree maintenance activities including low limb, stump routing, tree watering, and tree planting. Utilize proper safety precautions and comply with policies and procedures in the Department Illness and Injury Prevention Program. Operate equipment and vehicles with possession of all necessary licenses and certificates. Regular and consistent attendance.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Respond to inquiries from the general public. Clean storm grates and drains. Perform work in emergency situations as required. Perform minor and preventive maintenance on paint spraying equipment, compressors, sprayers, compactors, and other construction equipment. Work cooperatively with others. Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Maintenance Worker I
Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience: One (1) year of work experience in construction or related field.
License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California Driver's License required upon hire. Class B permit and DMV Medical Certification are required within three months of hire. A valid Class B California driver's license, Completion of Work Zone Safety certification issued by the International Municipal Signal Association, First Aid and CPR Certifications required prior to permanent appointment.
Maintenance Worker II
Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience: One (1) year of experience performing duties comparable to those of a Maintenance Worker I.
License and Certificate: Possession of all certifications required of the Maintenance Worker I and a valid Class B California driver's license with Air Brake and Tank Endorsements required upon hire. Possession of Railroad Worker Safety certification and Forklift certification is required prior to permanent appointment.

Deferred Compensation:
Choice of deferred compensation plans (Traditional and Roth) with 1% City-match effective July 2024. After successful completion of probation, new hires are also eligible for a 2% City contribution.

POSITION
To perform office and field work involving the inspection, investigation, and compliance of City codes, ordinances and abatement regulations. The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a current vacancy in the Community Development Department, as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.

The Code Compliance Officer position has a high level of public contact and is responsible for enforcing a variety of codes, ordinances and regulations within the City. The Ideal Candidate will possess good interpersonal, time management and communication skills. This Candidate will be a resourceful self-starter, with the ability to work independently with limited supervision. The Ideal Candidate will be self-motivated and display good judgment, as well as be organized, flexible, and approachable. Ideal Candidate will have substantial public contact experience and demonstrate excellent customer service skills, as well as the ability to coordinate and work effectively with other City and County departments. The ability to speak and understand Spanish is highly desirable.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Receives and responds to complaints regarding substandard dwellings or structures, zoning violations, debris, unsanitary conditions, abandoned or inoperative vehicles, overgrown vegetation, and other zoning and municipal code violations. Investigate possible violations; photograph evidence; contact responsible persons and compose letters; issues notices of violation, infraction, and/or misdemeanor citations for non-compliance; perform follow-up investigations to ensure that remedial action has been taken; develop and maintain accurate case files. Reads, interprets and applies state laws, municipal codes and ordinances, and other pertinent regulations. Drive vehicles as required. Work cooperatively with others.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Prepares necessary violation and other notices which outline proper repair and correction methods, time limits, permits and all necessary remedial work required. Contacts property owners; schedules and conducts on-site inspections; interprets codes and regulations and explains inspection procedures and regulations to involved parties. Prepare code violation cases for public hearings and court proceedings; appear at public hearing as necessary for case prosecution. Performs abatement of hazardous items on vacant lots and other premises. Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public, using principles of good customer service. May issue and process building permits. Explain and interpret requirements and restrictions. Maintain records and prepare reports of inspections and related code enforcement files. Perform related duties as assigned.

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience: One (1) year of experience performing duties involving code enforcement, including office and field investigation of a variety of code, ordinance and regulation violations.
License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Arrest Course 832 Penal Code certificate within one (1) year of hire. Possession of valid California Driver’s license required upon hire.
Code Compliance Officer II:
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade with advanced coursework or specialized training in planning, building inspection, technology or a related field desirable.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience performing duties involving code enforcement, including office and field investigation of a variety of code, ordinance and regulation violations.
License or Certificate: Must possess Arrest Course 832 Penal Code certificate and a valid California Driver's License upon hire.
Bilingual: The ability to speak and understand Spanish is highly desirable.
